John F. Kennedy said, " Every
bright spot the White House finds in
the economy i s like the policeman
bending over the body in the alley anf\
saying cheerfully, 'Two wounds are fa·
tal. The other one is pot so bad.' "
Sometimes, when playing a bridge
hand, you have to be economical with
your cards. In today's deal, the declar·
er had to be particularly careful with
his handling of the trump suit.
Despite having only five higll·card
points, North's hand, with four trumps
and a doubleton, was well worth a single raise.
. Alter winning the first trick.with the
heart ace, South saw that he had two
logical lines of play. He could cash the
spade ace, hoping to drop a singleton
king, or he could pl~y for East to hold
the club king. The rormer chance be·
ing only 26 percent (one-third of 'the
78·percent probability of a lH
splill, the declarer opted for the
finesse.
So, at trick two, South led the spade
jack from his hand. (This had a sec·
ondary advantage: West. afraid his
partner held the singleton trump ace,
might have ducked his king.l No luck
this time, !hough. West won with the
king, cashed his two heart tricks and
switched to a diamond.
South won with his ace and I~ the
spade seven to dummy's queen. After
the club finesse had worked, South
played the club three to his ace. Now
came the spade three to dummy's live.
The club jack was covered and ruffed.
Finally, South led his carefully pre·
served spade four to dummy's six and
cashed the club to. discarding his 6ia·
mondloser.
Phillip Alder has just published his
new book, Get Smarter at Bridge. It is
available, autographed upon request,
for $14.95 incl. p&p from P.O. Box 169,
Roslyn, NY 11$71-0169.
