Christie Whionan of New Jersey, a name on !be guess list. · · . . Because of it, some people say•ambition for second spot on the 1996 national ticket motivates her every move. She denies it. But the tax-cutting governor, midway through her fiist term, is an ambitious woman, whatever the aim. She's won her promised 30 percent cut in state income taxes a year ahead of schedule. She got a national introduction in a leading role, delivoering the Republican reply to President Clinton's State of the Union message. . She keeps her lines open; when she found herself "kind of on the same wavelentU.:' ·as Colin Powell on affirmative action juograms, she discussed it with him on the telephone. Whitman bad signed legislation expanding state affirmative action efforts, "not a quota system but opening up the process," while Republicans in Congress were trying to limit or end the system at the federal level. Officials at Chicago-based FMC Corp. aren't biding their joy at the demise of the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Louisville, Ky. The Louisville plant, where more than I ,000 civilians help make surface warfare equipment for the Navy, was one of the bases recently pegged for closure by the independent Base Closure and Realignment Commission (llRAC). With the Louisville base out of the way, FMC is n.ow the only ·remaining source olthiS equipment (or llie Navy.
