The Labor Department said today new applications for
unemployment ln.•urance totaled a seasonally ar'justed 374,000,
down from a revised 416,1100 a week earlier and the lowest since
367,000 duting the week ended July 1.
Claims during the week ended July IS Initially were estimat·
e,t at 417,1100, highest since 418,1100 claims were fi~ during the
week ended Sell). 19, 1992. The drop last week ,las the largest
since a 57,1100 decline during the week ended July 23, 1994.
Analysts had attributed the large number of claim• earlier
this month partly to layoffs in the auto industry due to model
changeovers. They bad expected claims In fall as automakers
reopened their plant• and rehired their workers.
