Former Meigs
football field
sold, again
By Sarah Hawley
shawley@aimmediamidwest.com

POMEROY —The
former Meigs High
School Football Field
has been sold once
again.
Following a nearly
one hour executive ses
sion, the Meigs Local
Board of Education
approved the sale of the
“old stadium and sur
rounding grounds” to
Ted Dexter for a price
of $80,000. Dexter is
the owner of Ted Dex
ter Trucking, which has
an office on East Main
Street in Pomeroy.
The action was
approved by a 4-0 vote,
with board member
Barbara Musser abstain
ing from the vote.
The district had
attempted to sell the
field three times at auc
tion, with no bidders
during the third attempt

in August 2018.
The property, which
is nearly 13 acres of
land, has been adver
tised for auction three
times. The first attempt
to sell the property
was in 2013, with the
second earlier this year
resulting in a winning
bid of $171,000. That
purchase was not com
pleted, leading to the
third attempt.
With no bids at the
August auction, the
district had the option
to negotiate a private
sale of the property as
was done last year with
property the district
owned in the Laurel
Cliff area.
Pomeroy Village
officials had expressed
interest in a small por
tion of the property for
possible future expan
sion of the village’s

Ceremony held for new officials

Sarah Hawley | Sentinel

A ceremony was held on Thursday morning for the newly elected Meigs County officials who will begin their terms in 2019. Judge Scott
Powell issued the oath of office to Commissioner Tim Ihle, as well as symbolic oaths to Common Pleas Judge-elect Linda Warner, County
Court Judge Mick Barr (recently appointed to fill the remainder of Judge Steve Story's term), and Auditor Mary T. Byer-Hill. An official
swearing-in will take place Dec. 28 for Judge Warner and Judge Barr, while Auditor Byer-Hill will be sworn-in closer to the beginning of her
term in March. For Warner, Barr and Byer-Hill, Thursday was symbolic, as an opportunity to celebrate with co-workers and other elected
officials. All four were elected during the November 2018 General Election.

Constellium sent
to arbitration over
health coverage clash
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A federal judge
has ordered an aluminum processing company in
West Virginia into arbitration over health coverage
for retired employees.
News outlets report U.S. District Judge Thomas
Johnston on Wednesday granted an injunction to
prevent Constellium Rolled Products in Ravenswood from making changes to medical and pre
scription drug coverage for 1,500 union retirees
and their families.
The company will enter arbitration with a local
affiliated with the United Steel, Paper and Forest
ry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Indus
trial and Service Workers International Union.
The proposed change challenged by the union
would have affected Medicare-eligible retirees
starting Jan. 1. The company had planned to
replace employer-provided group coverage with a
privately run insurance exchange with the option
to buy supplemental Medicare coverage.

OHIO VALLEY — A Gallipolis
man was captured and arrested
after a pursuit over state lines.
Gallia County Sheriff Matt
Champlin states that on Dec. 4,
deputies from the Gallia County
Sheriff’s Office received a report
from a resident on Zuspan Hol
low Road that a white Chevrolet
Pickup Truck had been stolen. A
short time later, dispatchers from
the Mason County West Virginia
911 Center received a report from
a Glenwood gas station in West
Virginia that described a vehicle
fitting the same description as the
stolen truck that reportedly drove

off without paying for fuel.
An alert from a Mason
County Sheriff’s Deputy
spotted the truck a short
time later near the Silver
Bridge and attempted to
stop the driver. The suspect,
Boggess
Adam D. Boggess, 42, of
Gallipolis, reportedly fled
from the deputy and led him on a
high speed chase across the state
line into Ohio. Boggess led officers
across U.S. 35 to Ohio 160 where
he temporarily disabled his vehicle
in a Jackson Pike parking lot. Bog
gess then continued to flee from
officers toward the City of Galli
polis, where the stolen vehicle was
disabled with a road strip device

by officers from the Gallipo
lis Police Department. Bog
gess reportedly abandoned
the vehicle at the First Bap
tist Church parking lot and
was able to elude arrest by
fleeing from officers on foot.
On Wednesday, officers
from the Gallipolis Police
Department took a report of a
stolen white truck from a busi
ness on Eastern Avenue in Gal
lipolis. At approximately 3:30
p.m., another deputy from Gallia
County spotted the stolen vehicle
traveling north on Ohio 7, north
of the Gallipolis City limits. When

It’s okay to
not be okay
It’s a Tuesday night. I’m writing to you from college. It’s finals
week. I can’t begin to tell you how
thankful I am to
know this is about
over. The past three
and a half months
have drained me
emotionally. I don’t
feel like writing this.
Add it to my growTeen
ing list of depressing
Testimony columns.
Isaiah
I never imagined
Pauley
this would be my
story. I always
looked forward to college. It was
my dream. I remember dreaming
about how much better college
would be than high school. A
prominent Christian college in
Ohio gave me $50,000. I accepted
the offer. At face value, people
probably thought I was content.
What more could I have asked for?
If you’ve been following my column since August, you’ve learned
a lot about me. I haven’t been
okay. I’ve shed more tears these
past three and a half months than
the past three years combined. I’ve
battled depression. I’ve watched
my relationship suffer. I’ve considered leaving God altogether. I
haven’t been okay.
But it’s okay to not be okay.
Some of you are annoyed right
now. You’re tired of reading my
sad columns. But this is my therapy. Someone needs to know that
it’s okay to not be okay.
The Apostle Paul writes,
“For we do not want you to be
unaware, brothers, of the affliction
we experienced in Asia. For we
were so utterly burdened beyond
our strength that we despaired
of life itself. Indeed, we felt that
we had received the sentence of
death. But that was to make us
rely not on ourselves but on God
who raises the dead” (2 Cor. 1:8-9
ESV).
Even Paul battled depression.
He despaired of life. He desperately desired his circumstances to
change. But through his pain, he
learned to rely on God. He experienced the power and presence
of Christ in a deeper way. And the
same has been true for me.
The same Jesus who says, “‘… I
am with you always, to the end of
the age’” (Matt. 28:20 ESV).
The same Jesus who says, “‘I
have said these things to you, that
in me you may have peace. In the
world you will have tribulation.
But take heart; I have overcome
the world’” (John 16:33 ESV).
The same Jesus who says,
“‘Peace I leave with you; my peace
I give to you. Not as the world
gives do I give to you. Let not
your hearts be troubled, neither
let them be afraid’” (John 14:27
ESV).
Jesus is enough for me. And the
same is true for you. It’s okay to
not be okay. But it’s not okay to
stay that way.
Paul writes, “He [God] delivered us from such a deadly peril,
and he will deliver us. On him
we have set our hope that he will
deliver us again” (2 Cor. 1:10
ESV).
I don’t know how I made it, but
I did. I don’t know what you’re facing, but you’re going to make it.
God is a deliverer. It’s okay to not
be okay. But don’t settle. God is
faithful until the end.
Paul writes, “And I am sure of
this, that he who began a good
work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ”
(Phil. 1:6 ESV).
In the meantime, learn to rely
on Jesus. Let Him be enough for
you. If you’re lonely, remember He
is with you. If you’re sick, remember He is your healer. If you’re
anxious, remember He is your
peace. If you’re sad, remember He
is your joy. Jesus is whatever you
need, whenever you need it. And
so much more.
“All praise to God, the Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is
our merciful Father and the source
of all comfort. He comforts us in
all our troubles so that we can
comfort others. When they are
troubled, we will be able to give
them the same comfort God has
given us” (2 Cor. 1:3-4 NLT).
I pray this glimpse into my story
comforts someone. It’s okay to not
be okay. Just don’t stay that way.

Christ is God’s perfect star
The stars viewed at night
are a wondrous sight. It is
a compelling experience to
observe them in their particular configurations and to consider their designated Gospel
meanings. It is clear that God
ordained the arrangement
of the stars to dramatize His
holy plan of redemption. The
astrologists have it all wrong.
Nonetheless, the Bible
refers to certain of the constellations such as Arcturus,
Orion, and the Pleiades,
which factor in the divine
portrayal. It is the prerogative
of God alone to use the stars
for His purposes. The Star of
Bethlehem serves as another
example, for God designated
that special star to guide the
Magi to where Jesus was at
that time.
Take into consideration
also that the Lord Himself is
referred to as a star. Scripture
calls Him “the bright and
morning star, which carries
the truth that Jesus Christ
brings Heaven’s light to the
darkness of the world.
It is said that a perfect
star reveals five points. By
contrast, an observation of
Scripture makes five wonderful points about Jesus Christ.

THOUGHT
FOR TODAY

As the Mighty God, His
divine power was evident
on His way to the Cross. In
Gethsemane, He wrestled
spiritually for all humanity.
At Gabatha, He permitted
Himself to be ashamed and
abused. On Golgatha, He lay
down His life for the sins of
man.
Jesus Christ walked every
inch of the Calvary Road. He
endured every moment of
Calvary pain. He bled every
drop of Calvary blood. He is
the Mighty God.
The fourth point of God’s
perfect star is that Jesus
Christ is “Everlasting Father.”
The word “father” is the most
tender revelation concerning Him. It emphasizes His
divine desire for relationship
with you and me.
The fifth point of God’s perfect star is that Jesus Christ is
“Prince of Peace.” As Prince
of Peace, He gives perfect
peace to believers. He is the
only hope the world has for
peace.
The light of God’s Perfect Star has come to us. It
becomes a compelling suggestion that we let His perfect
light shine in our lives.
Pastor Ron Branch lives in Mason County
and is pastor of Hope Baptist Church,
Middleport, Ohio.

Our true hero
I’m sure you have thought about and
seen heroes on television or in the movies.
You, like me, probably think of a hero as
someone who is bigger, stronger, and can do things that we
can’t do. Some of the heroes
I think of are imaginary like
Superman or Spiderman, but
some heroes are very real
people like firefighters or
police officers.
God’s Kids There are many heroes in
Korner the Bible too. One of them we
Pastor Ann read about in the Old TestaMoody
ment. His name was Samson.
Even before he was born, an
angel said Samson would be heroic, as we
read in Judges 13:5, “He shall begin to save
Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”
Samson was a hero, just like the angel
promised: big and strong, doing things
ordinary people could never do. For example one time, Samson defeated 30 men all
by himself. Another time, Samson used just
the jawbone of a donkey as his only weapon. Samson was even able to push a whole
building down with his strength! Through
Samson, God did many great things for His
people, Israel. But Samson also did a lot of
things that weren’t heroic at all. He didn’t
keep the promises he made to God, he
didn’t always obey God’s commandments,
and he didn’t always trust God’s Word.
Sometimes, we do those same things. We
don’t always keep our promises to God. We
don’t always obey God’s commandments.
And we don’t always trust God’s Word. We
are sinners, just like Samson was, so we
need an even greater hero than Samson.
Our forever hero’s name is Jesus. Even
before He was born, an angel said that
Jesus would be heroic, as we hear in Luke
1:32-33, “He will be great and will be called
the Son of the Most High. And the Lord
God will give to Him the throne of His
father David, and He will reign over the
house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom
there will be no end.”
Jesus was and is a hero, just like the
angel promised. Even when He was a baby,
He was the one true God who became a
man to save us all. Our hero Jesus kept
all His promises, and He obeyed all God’s
commandments. He even let Himself be
nailed on a cross and die, so we could
be saved from our sins. Jesus had all the
strength in the world, but He chose to
be weak and die in our place because He
loved us that much. Jesus is the hero who
did what we needed, but we couldn’t do for
ourselves. He died and rose again to give
us forgiveness and salvation. He is our true
hero!
Let’s say a prayer together. Father God,
thank You for sending us a real hero in
Your Son Jesus. He was brave and strong
in ways we never thought about, and He
gave up His life for us. Please help us to
remember what Jesus did for us, especially
this holiday season, and let us be more
like Him every day. In Your name we pray,
Amen.

are adapted from the sermon series “What
Child is This?” by Ralph Tausz.)

they listened, we got composure

Mayfield believes OU’s Riley ready for coaching jump to NFL

in Riley’s first year at the
Big 12 power.
Mayfield was asked
directly if he wants Riley
to come to Cleveland.
“I have a relationship
with Lincoln,” Mayfield.
“He’s been great and we
had success, but whatever
decision is made here I’m
going to make the most of
it. Obviously, there’s been
a level of comfort with
him in the past that I’ve
had. But whatever happens, happens. And you
know what, you can’t control that so I’m not going
to worry about it.”
Mayfield also doesn’t
know if Riley is itching to
go pro.
“I think down the road
probably,” he said. “Right
now I’m not going to
speak for him, but he’s
ready whenever that time
comes.”
The Browns fired Hue
Jackson in October, and
general manager John
Dorsey is in the early
stages of a coaching
search that will accelerate once the season ends.
Interim coach Gregg Williams will interview for
the job, and it’s likely that
Dorsey will meet with

former Packers coach
Mike McCarthy, who was
dismissed after Sunday’s
loss to Arizona.
Dorsey and McCarthy
worked together in Green

Riley’s appeal to the
Browns could stretch
beyond his strong ties to
Mayfield. He’s regarded

Mayfield has little doubt
Riley has the right attributes to lead professional
players.
“After being here, it’s
about respect,” Mayfield
said. “You get a locker
room full of guys that are
making a lot of money,
obviously the egos are
going to be there. You
have to have the respect
in guys. You have to be
able to get the best out of
them even when they’re
going to get paid regardless. So you’ve got to be
able to get the most out
of them and demand it,
just by respect and so
when it comes down to
it, that’s why I would say
he’s a great coach.”
Mayfield said his admiration for Riley extends

BEREA, Ohio (AP)
— Baker Mayfield isn’t
campaigning for Lincoln
Riley.
The rookie quarterback
isn’t dismissing the possibility his former coach
joins him in Cleveland
either.
Mayfield said Wednesday that he believes Riley
is prepared to move from
Oklahoma into the NFL,
but he would also understand if the 35-year-old
wants to remain at one
of college football’s most
successful programs.
“Lincoln’s been ready,
it’s just who he is and
how he coaches and the
respect level he’s had from
all of his players, how
detailed he is,” Mayfield
said. “Yeah, he’s ready
but that’s his decision and
you know what, he’s got
something special there,
so I don’t think anybody
is going to blame him if
he stays there for the next
20 years.”
Riley has been linked
as a possible candidate to
be Cleveland’s next coach
because of his obvious
connection with Mayfield, who won the Heisman Trophy last season

Rio’s Davis named honorable mention All-American

KANSAS CITY, Mo.
— University of Rio

been named to the 2018

(NAIA) Women’s Soccer
All-America honorable

The teams, which were
selected by a committee
consisting of the NAIAWomen’s Soccer Coaches

seven additional women’s

announced Tuesday
night.
An 11-player first-,
second- and third team,

CINCINNATI (AP) — Jeff Driskel’s debut as
the Bengals’ starting quarterback went poorly all
around. At least he’s got experience on his side the
second time around.
Driskel threw for a touchdown, but had an interception , four sacks and a fumble as Cincinnati lost
to Denver 24-10 at Paul Brown Stadium. Driskel will
make his second start Sunday in Los Angeles against
the Chargers (9-3), who have won eight of their past
nine games. He expects things to be smoother this
week as he gets ready for his second start.
“Definitely in some ways it’s easier, but that
doesn’t mean it’s easy,” Driskel said Wednesday.
“That’s something I’ve done in the past in college,
but everything is totally new at this level.”
After four straight losses, the Bengals (5-7) are
looking for any positive they can find.
The offense has slid a little more each week as
its most important players got hurt. Receiver A.J
Green injured a toe on his right foot during the
Bengals’ previous win, 37-34 over the Buccaneers
on Oct. 28. He missed the next three games and
returned last Sunday, but aggravated the injury and
is out for the rest of the season.
The Bengals put Green on injured reserve
Wednesday. Coach Marvin Lewis said the receiver
is getting medical opinions about whether he
needs surgery, but he’s expected back for the start
of offseason workouts.
