ROCKSPRINGS — The
Ladies Day Baking Cupcake

place Thursday afternoon on the
Hill Stage at the Meigs County
Fair.
Mary Ann Shoults won the
contest with her pink champagne cupcakes. Sara Lunsford
received second place with
chocolate cupcakes displayed as

The judges had a difficult
time choosing one because they
were both delicious in different
ways. As one judge said, it came
down to the icing on the pink
champagne cupcakes being too
good to pass up.
This is the second year for
the event at the fair. There is
no registration fee or preregistration required to participate
and compete in the event. The
contest is for amateurs only
and has two divisions, including a junior division for Meigs
County residents ages five to 17
and a senior division for anyone
18 years or older.
The price for first place was
25 dollars and three cookbooks.
Second place received 15 dollars

Tribe completes sweep of Reds

Gary Landers | AP

Cincinnati Reds’ Billy Hamilton (6) is tagged out at the plate by Cleveland
Indians catcher Roberto Perez, left, while trying to score on a ground ball
by Joey Votto during the ninth inning Wednesday, in Cincinnati. The Indians
won 4-3.

CINCINNATI (AP) — The
sight of Cincinnati’s Billy Hamilton speeding home with the
potential tying run didn’t shake
up Yonder Alonso.
Cleveland’s first baseman
calmly fielded Joey Votto’s
bouncer and made a strong
throw to catcher Roberto Perez,
cutting down Hamilton for the
first out of the ninth inning. Just
like that, the Reds went from
second and third with nobody
out to first and second with one
out, and Cleveland held on for a
4-3 win on Wednesday night.
“He’s a fast runner, so I had
to make sure to not only throw
with a lot of zip, but that it was
accurate,” Alonso said. “It was
huge. It gave us first and second
with one out. That opens up a

lot of different things.”
Melky Cabrera lofted a goahead two-run homer into
the left-field seats in the sixth
inning, and the Indians extended their winning streak to five
games.
The Indians held the Reds
scoreless after a three-run first.
In the sixth, Cody Reed (0-1)
walked Alonso before allowing
Cabrera’s third homer of the
season.
“It’s nice,” Alonso said about
having Cabrera in the lineup.
“He enjoys the game. He plays
with a chip on his shoulder.”
Four relievers combined for
3 2/3 scoreless innings before
Brad Hand escaped trouble with
Alonso’s help in the ninth for his
28th save in 33 opportunities.

“Hoo, boy,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. “I
don’t know where to start.
Cody Allen gave us two innings
of high-leverage relief. A lot of
good things happened in that
game.”
Reds interim manager Jim
Riggleman had no problem with
the decision by Hamilton, who
reached third on Jose Peraza’s
ground-rule double.
“Billy was going on contact
because it is Billy,” Riggleman
said. “If Votto hit it in a position
where he could score, it’s tied.
What was supposed to happen
if Billy’s out is I wanted Peraza
to go to third. I know (Eugenio)
Suarez had a rough night, but I
want him up there with a man
on third and less than two outs.”

Expectations high
for OSU even with
Meyer sidelined
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Coach Urban Meyer’s future at Ohio State might be in doubt, but the
talent level on the field for the Buckeyes certainly
isn’t a question.
Meyer was put on paid leave Aug. 1 — two days
before preseason practice opened — while the
university investigates his handling of domestic
abuse allegations against fired assistant coach
Zach Smith.
Ohio State says it hopes to finish up the probe
within the week, which would give the team a
couple weeks to get used to the new normal before
they open Sept. 1 against Oregon State. Coaches
and players have been off-limits for interviews, so
progress reports have been hard to come by.
But this we know: The Buckeyes have a new
starting quarterback, and the Dwayne Haskins Jr.
era at Ohio State will start with the same sky-high
expectations typical in Columbus. It helps that he
is surrounded by a deep, experienced wide receiver corps and a tandem of running backs that might
be the best in the nation.
Here are some things to watch with the Buckeyes in 2018:
That new QB
The major obstacle to Haskins becoming Ohio
State’s next starting quarterback was erased
when Joe Burrow decided to transfer to LSU
after spring practice rather than battle it out with
Haskins in fall camp.
Haskins — who already secured his place in
Buckeyes lore by winning last year’s Michigan
game — takes the keys from four-year starter J.T.
Barrett.
The redshirt sophomore is a pass-first, pro-style
QB with a rifle arm who brimmed with poise
when he spelled the injured Barrett and led Ohio
State to a come-from-behind win over Michigan
last November.
“He has a little different way of doing it, but he’s
earning the respect of our players and our staff,”
Meyer said last month.
Redshirt freshman Tate Martell moves into the
backup role.
Bosa’s swan song
Defensive end Nick Bosa is looking for the kind
of monster year that will keep his NFL draft stock
high.
Following his brother Joey, now a star with
the Los Angeles Chargers, Nick is one of the top
defensive linemen in the sport going into his
junior year. He’ll be a first-round draft pick just
like his brother, unless something drastic happens.
Part of a ridiculously deep defensive line rotation last year, Bosa didn’t get as many snaps as he
would have liked, finishing with 34 tackles and 8½
sacks. With less depth this season, he’ll be on the
field more.
Two-headed RB
Any college coach would be thrilled to have just
one of the two running backs who will be featured
in the Buckeyes backfield.
J.K. Dobbins rushed for 1,400 yards a freshman
last year on the heels of a 1,000-yard freshman season in by Mike Weber in 2017.
Weber was hampered by a hamstring injury for a
chunk of last season, which gave Dobbins most of
the carries and the chance to shine.
Barrett ate up a lot of the carries that normally
would have gone to running backs. With him gone,
the workload for the Dobbins-Weber tandem will
increase.

West Virginia quarterback Will Grier (7) looks to pass against Texas Tech during a game last year in Morgantown, W.Va. While the Sooners
are still the preseason favorite, there are also high expectations for Grier, the preseason Big 12 offensive player of the year who threw
34 touchdowns and 3,490 yards in his injury-shortened WVU debut.

WVU seeks 1st Big 12 title
MORGANTOWN,
W.Va. (AP) — Will Grier
has cut the long locks
that helped earned him
the nickname “Touchdown Jesus,” yet the
beard remains. More
importantly, the West
Virginia quarterback’s
broken middle finger
on his throwing hand is
mended and he’s ready
to lead the Mountaineers
to even better things on
offense in 2018.
And the do-it-all Grier
has learned one thing
heading into his senior
season — he doesn’t
necessarily have to try so
hard to make plays.
The Mountaineers,
who went 7-6 last season,
are hungry for a Big 12
title that has eluded them
since joining the league
in 2012 and are buying
into the hype for now,
even launching a Heisman webpage for Grier.
“I’m pretty narrowly
focused on just winning games,” Grier said.
“That stuff’s great, but
my main goal is to be 1-0
every week.”
With Grier and West
Virginia wide receiver
David Sills returning and
others added to the mix,
the Mountaineers are
hoping they can put up
offensive numbers similar to a year ago.
Grier’s 34 TD passes
in 11 games were the
second most in a single
season for West Virginia.
He completed 64 percent

of his passes for 3,490
yards. Sills tied for the
national lead with 18 TD
catches.
What gives Dana Holgorsen optimism entering his eighth season as
head coach is that from
a maturity standpoint,
West Virginia is “light
years ahead of many of
the teams I’ve had since
I’ve been here.”
Some other things to
know about West Virginia, which opens the
season Sept. 1 against
Tennessee in Charlotte,
North Carolina:
Defense questions
As in past years, the
Mountaineers’ success likely rests with
its defense, which has
nine players with starting experience back on
a unit that ranked last
in rushing defense and
eighth in total defense in
the Big 12. The defense
is anchored by junior
linebacker David Long
(75 total tackles, 15.5
tackles for loss), and
senior safety Dravon
Askew-Henry (57 tackles).
Caution ahead
Grier said in light of
his Nov. 18 injury on a
scramble against Texas
that cost him almost
three full games, “the
green light is still there”
for him to run, “but I
think there’s a certain
balance to knowing

when to try to try to get
that extra yard, try to
get that first down.”
For instance, West
Virginia faced a fourthand-5 against Virginia
Tech on the last drive of
the 2017 season opener.
Grier scrambled nine
yards to keep the drive
alive, although WVU
lost 31-24. “I’ve got to
go get that first down
and do whatever I can,”
he said.
But if it’s second down
in the first quarter, “it’s
maybe a time to take
care of myself. We’ve
had discussions about
that. I don’t regret anything that I’ve done, but
moving forward I want
to be as smart as I can
about taking care of my
body but also making
sure I do everything I
can for this team.”
New faces
West Virginia has several transfers on board,
as Holgorsen seems to
do every year, including Grier last year from
Florida. This time, the
Mountaineers welcome
wide receiver T.J. Simmons, who played on
special teams at Alabama as a freshman two
years ago. Tight end
Jovani Haskins sat out
last year after transferring from Miami and has
yet to play a down in
college.
After defensive linemen Adam Shuler and

Lamonte McDougle
transferred, graduate
transfers Kenny Bigelow
from Southern Cal and
Jabril Robinson from
Clemson were added.
The defense also welcomes junior college
safety Josh Norwood,
who played in 2016 at
Ohio State.
Ball carrier
Kennedy McKoy will
take over for two-time
1,000-yard rusher Justin
Crawford. McKoy ran
for 596 yards and tied
Crawford for a teamhigh seven TDs. Backup
Martell Pettaway figures to get significantly
more carries than the
three per game he had
last year, while redshirt
freshman Alec Sinkfield
and freshman Leddie
Brown could get some
playing time.
Schedule
West Virginia has two
Power Five opponents
on its nonconference
schedule. Besides the
opener, West Virginia
will play at North Carolina State on Sept. 15.
The Mountaineers have
five Big 12 home games,
including the conference opener Sept. 22
against Kansas State.
Their regular season will
conclude with a tough
stretch against TCU and
Oklahoma at home sandwiched around a trip to
Oklahoma State.

Haley trying to mesh talent, toughness
BEREA, Ohio (AP)
— Browns offensive
coordinator Todd Haley
awoke Wednesday and
discovered his phone
was overloaded with
text messages.
He became an overnight TV star.
Haley was impossible
to miss in the second
episode of HBO’s “Hard
Knocks.” He was everywhere, whether berating Corey Coleman for
drops and lack of effort
before the receiver asked
to be traded; making fun
of Carl Nassib’s parents
for naming their baby
“Carl”; hanging upsidedown in coach Hue
Jackson’s office on an
inversion table or telling
Pro Bowl receiver Jarvis
Landry to mentor rookie
Antonio Callaway.
“They showed everything, huh?” Haley said.
Beyond his on-screen
appearances, Haley has
made quite an impression during his first
months with Cleveland
after being fired by
Pittsburgh following
six seasons guiding the
Steelers’ offense.
A former head coach
in Kansas City, Haley
has brought 22 years
of NFL wisdom and a
no-nonsense demeanor
to the Browns, who are
trying to dig out from a
0-16 season. He’s molding quarterbacks Tyrod
Taylor and Baker Mayfield, developing a young
receiving corps that
could soon add Dez Bryant and trying to instill
mental toughness and
discipline into a team
that has lost 31 of its
last 32 games.
The Browns are more
talented, but Haley
knows that won’t mean
anything if they aren’t

on gut.
In Haley’s mind, the
Browns can’t change
their culture if players
are getting preferential
treatment.
But although Haley
disagrees with Jackson,
he backs him.
“The great thing about
here is coach Jackson
gives us as assistant
coaches the opportunity
to speak our opinion,”
Haley said. “Ultimately,
it’s his decision of what
he wants to do, and I’ll
100 percent support it.
But that’s not always the

their thoughts. And
some of them, he’s going

he’s not. But whatever
decision is made, I’m
100 percent behind.”
Haley, too, is in favor
of the Browns considering Bryant.
The former Dallas star
is scheduled to visit with
Cleveland on Thursday,
and if the Browns like
what they see and hear
from the free agent, they
could sign him.
While Bryant isn’t the
game-breaking, downfield threat he once was,
Haley would still be
open to adding him to
Cleveland’s offense as
long as he’s willing to
buy into the team.
“If Dez Bryant, who
obviously has been
a good player in this
league, is in that mix,
he’s going to be coached
like everybody else,”
Haley said. “I tell everybody that shows up here
we don’t care about

Steelers to get
closer look at young
quarterbacks
LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers
plan to get a closer look at their two most recent
draft picks at quarterback.
Rookie third-round pick Mason Rudolph and
Josh Dobbs, Pittsburgh’s fourth-round selection
in 2017, will see all of the playing time when the
Steelers visit the Green Bay Packers for their second preseason game on Thursday.
“They’re going to play exclusively,” Steelers
coach Mike Tomlin said. “(We) haven’t detailed
the division of labor, but those two guys will be
featured.”
On Tuesday, Tomlin ruled out veterans Ben
Roethlisberger and Landry Jones for the game.
The announcement came before Roethlisberger
left Tuesday’s training camp practice with a possible concussion.
“Ben Roethlisberger sustained a hit today in
practice,” Tomlin said through a team spokesman
after practice. “He is being evaluated as part of the
concussion protocol.”
Roethlisberger was face down on the turf,
surrounded by his teammates, after throwing a
touchdown pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster during a
best-of-seven competitive 2-point conversion drill
between the offense and defense.
Roethlisberger was helped to his feet and sat on
a water cooler with a towel over his head as practice continued. He touched his head several times
and eventually walked off the field under his own
power with trainers and team doctors.

Kasey Kahne retiring
after 15 Cup seasons
CONCORD, N.C.
(AP) — Kasey Kahne
announced Thursday that
he will retire from fulltime racing in NASCAR
and plans to focus on the
sprint car team he owns.
Kahne said in a Twitter post that he is at ease
with the decision after 15
years racing in NASCAR.
Kahne, from Enumclaw,
Washington, made it to
NASCAR via sprint car
racing and his Kasey
Kahne Racing team
competes in the World of
Outlaws series.
KKR driver Brad Sweet
won the prestigious
Knoxville (Iowa) Nationals last weekend and the
38-year-old Kahne was
present for the victory.
“I’m not sure what the
future holds for me,”
Kahne said. “The highs
don’t outweigh the lows
and the grueling schedule
takes a toll on your quality of life. I need to spend
more time doing the
things I enjoy and love
and that’s spending time

Grier wants to lead
WVU to 1st Big 12 title
By Stephen Hawkins

CLEVELAND (AP)
— Rookie wide receiver
Antonio Callaway has
been warned by the
Browns to run straight
routes off the field.
Callaway, who came to
Cleveland with a troubled
background, was cited
last week for marijuana
possession and driving
with a suspended license.

Maybe Will Grier can
do at West Virginia what
Baker Mayfield did with
Oklahoma before going
to the NFL.
If the senior quarterback can mimic the
spectacular season had
by Mayfield, the Mountaineers would have a
couple of significant
firsts. They have never
won a Big 12 Conference title or had a Heisman Trophy winner.
Oklahoma won its
third Big 12 title in a
row, and 11th overall, on
the way to the College
Football Playoff with the
Heisman-winning quarterback who was the
No. 1 overall pick in the
NFL draft.
While the Sooners are
the preseason favorite
again, there are also
high expectations for
Grier, the preseason
Big 12 offensive player
of the year who threw
34 touchdowns and
3,490 yards in his injuryshortened WVU debut.
The Mountaineers even
launched a Grier7Heisman.com website during
the summer. The Big 12
has never had back-toback Heisman winners.
“I would never
approve a campaign
unless I felt like a player
could handle it,” coach
Dana Holgorsen said.
“He’s ready for this. He’s
prepared himself his
whole life for this. … I’ve
got no worries about
him not understanding
expectations and how to

things have to change.
“Now listen, you’ve
got talent but talent ain’t
everything I’m looking
for,” Jackson said. “I want
you to become a man
here, and responsible and

cautioned him to change

deal with expectations.”
The Mountaineers,
who are 27-27 in conference games since joining
the Big 12 seven years
ago, were picked second
in the preseason media
poll, ahead of TCU,
Texas and Oklahoma
State.
“We’re focused on winning games and being
the best we can be, and I
think Dana understands
and trusts that I know
that,” said Grier, the former Florida quarterback
who broke the middle
finger on his throwing
hand when diving for
the end zone in the 11th
game last season. “What
I’m focused on is not the
expectations, but the
preparation.”
West Virginia also
returns receiver David
Sills, a former quarterback who had 60 catches
for 980 yards and a
nation-best 18 TDs last
season.
Mayfield’s successor
at Oklahoma is Kyler
Murray , the ninth overall pick in the Major
League Baseball draft
this summer. The former
Texas A&M transfer
got a nearly $5 million
bonus from the Oakland
Athletics, who agreed to
let the speedy outfielder
play one more football
season. Murray and the
Sooners also have 1,000yard rusher Rodney
Anderson and 1,000yard receiver Marquise
Brown.
“This is going to be
an interesting team,
no question,” Sooners
coach Lincoln Riley

Djokovic wins in Cincinnati, Halep’s match suspended
trophies.
Djokovic has reached
the finals at Cincinnati
five times and dropped
all five matches — three
to Roger Federer, two to
Andy Murray.
“I think it adds more
to the motivation rather
than pressure,” Djokovic
said. “I really want to win
this tournament. I definitely need to play better
than I have in the first
couple of matches.”
There was one notable
upset in the men’s

Davis Cup overhauled for 2019
The Davis Cup is getting a radical overhaul in hopes of reviving
an event that has lost some luster.
Beginning next year, the top
team event in men’s tennis will
be decided with a season-ending,
18-team tournament at a neutral
site, creating an event that the
International Tennis Federation
believes will be more attractive to
elite players who have often passed
on competing for their countries
while already facing a crowded
schedule.
Teams will play one week in
February to advance to the championship in November, replacing
the current Davis Cup format
that is played over four weekends
throughout the year.
And players will be competing

for what the ITF says rivals Grand
Slam prize money after a $3 billion, 25-year agreement that was
approved Thursday at the organization’s conference in Orlando,
Florida. A spokesman said about
71 percent of the delegates voted
for the reform.
Beginning in 2019, 24 nations
will compete in a home-or-away
qualifying round in February, with
the 12 winners advancing to the
final tournament. They will be
joined by the four semifinalists
from the previous year, along with
two wild-card teams.
The finalists will be placed into
six, three-team groups for round
robin play, involving two singles
matches and one doubles match,
all best-of-three-sets — instead of

the current format has four singles
matches and one doubles match
that are best-of-five. The winners
and the next two teams with the
best records, will advance to the
single-elimination quarterfinals.
The first championship will be
held Nov. 18-24, 2019.
The new event was developed in
partnership with investment group
Kosmos, which was founded by
Barcelona and Spain soccer player
Gerard Pique.
The original plan called for
simply an 18-team championship at the end of the year, but
was amended after some nations
objected to the loss of home-site
matches. So those were added
to the proposal as the qualifying
round.

Feds to review Ohio
State response to
claims of abuse by doc
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Federal officials are
investigating Ohio State University’s response to allegations against a team doctor now accused of sexual
misconduct against scores of athletes and other male
students in the 1980s and 1990s.
The U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil
Rights will examine whether Ohio State has responded “promptly and equitably” to students’ complaints,
including claims that school officials knew about
misconduct by Dr. Richard Strauss but didn’t stop
him, the school said Thursday. That office oversees
enforcement of a federal law that bars sex discrimination in education.
Advocacy groups including the National Women’s
Law Center had urged the department to conduct
such a review, as was done with headline-making
allegations of recurrent sexual misconduct by doctors
at Michigan State University and the University of
Southern California.
Ohio State’s chief compliance officer, Gates GarrityRokous, said the school has responded appropriately
since allegations were made this spring about Strauss,
who killed himself in 2005.
“We are confident in the independence and thoroughness of the investigation we launched then as
well as our ongoing commitment to transparency,”
said Garrity-Rokous, a university vice president.
Some former students say they raised concerns
about Strauss to university employees as early as the
late 1970s, early in Strauss’ nearly 20-year employment there. Ohio State has said allegations that staff
didn’t properly respond back then are a key part of the
ongoing independent investigation being conducted
by the law firm Perkins Coie.
They have received accounts of Strauss’ sexual misconduct from more than 100 people , including male
athletes from 14 sports and others raising concerns

MASON, Ohio (AP)
— Novak Djokovic completed his comeback from
elbow surgery by winning
Wimbledon for the fourth
time. He’s inching closer
to one of the few titles to
elude him throughout his
career.
Djokovic overcame
an upset stomach and a
sluggish first set Wednesday, beating Adrian
Mannarino 4-6, 6-2, 6-1
before heavy rain halted
afternoon matches at
the Western & Southern
Open.
The 10th-seeded
Djokovic demonstrated
he’s back in form by winning another Wimbledon
title last month. Now he’s
trying to get his hardcourt game ready for the
U.S. Open, the latest step
in his long comeback.
He’s been inconsistent
while changing from
grass to hard courts.
“I know from experience it might come very
quickly,” he said. “So I’m
hoping for that.”
First, he’d love to win a
Cincinnati title and complete a personal quest.
Djokovic is trying to
become the first to win all
nine ATP Masters 1000
