GALLIPOLIS
The
Federal Army Homecoming
will return to the Gallipolis
City Park Friday through
Sunday to provide the public
with a glimpse of the livesled
by soldiers in the Civil War. ,
The homecoming recon ·nects Gallipolis with its history
during the war, when the city
served as a starting point for
troops and supplies headed
into Cof}federate territory.
Bob Hood, executive director of ihe Gallia County
·Convention and Visitors
Bureau, said the homecoming
has always been a major draw·
in the past and he expects it will
be again this year.
There was no homecoming
in the park for several years
until it was renewed again in
2004.
"It's the ftrst major activity
our 2005 tourism season,"
he said. "Every season it brings
people downtown to the park.
We like to utilize tlie park as
much as possible."
.The homecoming is spon'
sored by the visitors bureau
and is hosted by the 9ist Ohio
Volunteer Infantry Civil War
reenactment'group. ·
The event will feature Civil
War military camps open to the
public.· A tent city containing
period merchants and a blacksmith will also be on site.
Saturday's
highlight s
include a ladies tea. company
drills, artillery demonstrations, a sham battle at 1:30
p.m., and a Rounders (period
baseball ) game at 2:30p.m.
The community is welcome
to attend a period church service in the park at I 0 a.m.
Sunday. Those planning to
attend are asked to bring a blanket or lawn chair. A memorial
service at 12:30.p.m. will end

Two days ago, I gave a deal in which
.Sou th had to bat11e in a 4-3 fit agairJ..S1 a 5. 1 ~reak. Here is .another one. The layout
arose during th e 1983 Hoechst tourhament, played in the Netherlands. I was "
part 'Of a journalist team, partnering
Welshman Patrick Jourdain, with .teammates Ma ;~~ Rebattu and Carol wm Oppen
!rom 111e home country.
Si>~ no-trump makes because the .diamoncis are 3-3, but that is lucky. Our
Belgian opponen ts reached six hearts. If
the declarer coLlld have seen the lull deal.
he would have made the contract. but he
went one down .'
Our sequence reached the best spot,
with Jourdain (North) showing excellent
appreda1ion of the value of his ca rds
(Yes, we were helpetl by eaSt's nol opening or overcalling three spades.)
l won West's spade lead with dumrriy's
ace and drew two rounds ot trumps, getting the bad news. I con11n ued wi1h two
lop diamonds and a diamond ruff on tl'1 e
board . I returned to hand with a heart,
took two more rounds of trumps (discarding spades from the board),· and. led out
winning diamonds. West ruffed in. but had
to lead a hear!. Since he hadn't returned
a spade, I knew West had started with 1·
4-3-5 shape and East with 7-2·3·1 . Could
East have queen-doubleton of heartS?
The odds say that it is unlikely, and at the·
table, it was impos_s1ble. When West led
the h~art, he did it with an irritated ges·
ture, Practically hurling the. card onto the
table. I put up dummy's jack and had 12
tricks: one spade. three hearts." th ree dia-
