Equal pay for equnl workLike most people, I'm· not

Reader's Digest a few years
ago to say that one day as he
was driving his 5-yearcold

turned to him and asked,
"Dad, when did Mom come

I . remembered the , line
when it was recently reported that if you had to pay a
salary to a full-time, stay-athome mom for all the different work she did - the
baby-sitting, the cooking, t~e .
cleaning, the shopping, the
chauffeuring, the overtime
it would cost you
$134,000 a year.
Now if you are a man,
especially a successful businessman, you know how
ridiculous that figure is. It's
as if it's been pulled out of
thin air. For the baby-sitting
alone a successful businessman would pay himself up
to $5 million a year. And
he'd also want the family jet·
to be available to him at all
times, as well as the use of
the family-owned condos ' in
Paris, Rome, Martinique and
Hawaii. .

Of course not. He'd hire a

SHELTER

According
to
Kellie
DiFrischia of the CDC volunteers added more kennel
space, including installation
· of wall mounted kennels for
puppies and small dogs that
were donated by the Union
County Humane Society.
"We are pleased that more
kennel space has been created
to ease the stress on the dogs,"
DiFrischia said. "Imagine if
you had to share an eight hour
car ride with ten people verses
three people? You can see
how less dogs in each kennel
is so less stressful."
At the end of the work day
which began at 8:30 a.m. and
ended at 10 p.m., DiFrischia
said · she walked around the
keimels and instead of seeing
· 10 dogs per kennel, there
were three dogs.
Also accomplisht;d in the
extreme makeover was the
addition of more lighting and
the installation of a laundry
room which included a washer and dryer to wash bedding
for the dogs, a hot water tank,
a restroom and sinks for shelter volunteers.
A much needed heater was
also added at the shelter flS ,
was insulation to all walls of

and thanks to his window

was a.ttached so the windows
could be opened and closed.
TI1is means the building will

have now been closed.

Player~ love to pre·empll>ecause these
bids can ,cause the opponenls major
headaches. 01 course, occasionally it is
the pre·emptors partner who is caught,
but not often.
Today, let's look at the key principles of
bidding against high-level intervention.·
After two passes, East opened one club, .
ol ccwse. What should Scuth do now?
Given the prevailing vulnerabiily, a one"
spade overcall would be sane. But since
partner was a passed hand, South
decided to go the whole hcg and leaped
majestically - 'or suicidally, depanding
upon the outcome- to tour spades.

loo many Jl!lints to pass, but has no bel·
fer call available. (This double was a
borderline decision.) East, with one eye
on lhe vulnerability, passed, hoping lor

Four spades doubled was easy to ,maka

queen. East won with his ace, look the
diamond ace, and played a second dia·

c his spade ace, picked up Wesfs queen
with the aid of a Jinesse, and lost only
one heart and two diamonds to linish
