Perhaps you're aware of a
fairly new electronic predation. Similar in some ways to
spam, it makes a lot of phony
promises, highly emotional
appeals or heavy-handed

you to some sort of action that
betrays your personal i(lfor, mation (so that a bad guy,

"phishing," often even uses
the names of legitimate banking or conunercial institutions
to pull the wool over people's

been told that people fall prey
to it every day.
But more sinister than even

A Huilger.:For More
During Holy Week, it is
assumed that Christians
around the world are stopping in the middle of their
streams of busy-ness and preoccupation to consider and
reflect upon the amazing Jove
and work of grace accomplished by our Savior for His
glory and for our sakes. We
pause to consider the great
message of the Cross in seeing our Lord offer Himself in
our place -to pay for our sin.
We pause to reflect upon the
tremendous hope that I· we
share in the knowledge that
death could not contain Him
and we too are made heirs to
eternal life throllgh that same
power. '
But living, as we do, in the
"Information Age," it sadly
becomes all too. clear that
such a practiCe of retlection
and prayerful consideration is
challenging at the very least
and that we are l:leset by
demands on our time, energies and resources. And let's
face it, not all of the information that bombards . us con. stantly is accurate and reliable anyway .. . there is a
whole lot of "static" attempting to drown out the lovely
story of redemption and victory that the Gospel of God
paints us in the Bible.
Consider, if ·you will , that
more and more folks in this
technologically savvy culture, are frequent users of the
Internet. If you are perhaps
one of them, then you have
likely .become acquainted
with
something
called
"spam." Spam is basically
the junk mail of our cybernet· ic world. Once you get an email address, it's only a matter a time before it gets onto
·the lists of all sorts ·of businesses (some of which are
legitimate . perhaps, bin most
are not).You ' re also under a
constant onslaught of a spiri-.
tual son of spam in the pressures you face to keep up
with others' possessions,
their ambitious social schedules and their expectations on
what it means to be successful. All of these things are
· constantly distorting the very
things m.ost deserving of your
attention, time, and even passion. The things that are tern. porary, time and time again,
steal the investment of our

your light so shine before
that they may see
good work& and glorify
Father in heaven."

There's a strong possibility you co~td

some lnQicatlons· you mlghl have a ten·

or rationalizing. If you have duties to perform, roll up your sleeves and go to work .
liBRA (Sept. 23-0ct. 23) - Squelch all

resources. It you don't, when it comes time
to pay the bills down ttp line, you may wish
you had exercle9d far greater selt-controt.

WHO ' S t-101
- ANI> WHO ' S NOr

In NASCAR, the rule is: 'Do unto others as Mark would do unto you'
By Monte Dutton
NASCAR This Week

JUSTIN, TeXIjS - So respected is
Mark Martin, contending for a Nextel
Cup championship at age 47, that oth. er drivers have cited·Martin in what
amounts to a NASCAR equivalent of
the Golden.Rule:
Do unto others as Mark would do
untt> you. · .
· It's similar to the respect commanded by a baseball player like the
late Ted Williams, who seldom found
himself being called out on a third
strike. If Williams didn't swing, umpires figured it wasn't a strike, and if
Martin makes a move on the track,
other drivers figure it must have
been OK. .
To truly gauge the esteem in which
Martin is held, one must go elsewhere.
Certainly no driver has been more respected by his peers than Martin, at

least not since.the untimely death of
Dale Earnhardt. The respect afforded
Earnhardt was often grudgihg. Not so
with Martin, who is the embodiment
of the trite term "driver's driver."
"Mark Martin is one of the most
well-respected guys that has ever
driven a race car, in my opinion," said
. one of only two drivers Martin trails
in the standings, Jimmie Johnson. "I
was talking with him before the Bristol race and said, 'Man, I thought you
were going to slow down this year.'
He said, 'Me, too.' ... For a guy who
wants to slow down, for whatever reason he would want to retire or slow
down or if you think you have lost
your edge to a certain degree, Mark ,
Martin hasn't lost his edge or his desire. The guy has·raced in more races·
than anyone: winning, competing ....
He is very well-respected in dur
sport."
·
Four times Martin has finished as

runner-up for the championship.
What Martin won't db is pay glow-ing compliments -to himself. In fact,
they plainly embarrass him. To hear
him tell it, he's too old, washed up,
burnt out and out of touch. The points
standings, with his name near the top,
seem to strike him as some mild form
of miracle.
"There's a lot of time in there for
things to change," he said, "·but, so far,
I'm having the time of my life.
,
"It's a lot harder work when you get
my age to get' it dope. We're working
real hard to get it done .... I could get
it'done better U years ago.''
Martin actually seems to believe the
self-deprecating· observations he
makes about himself. . .
No offense, Mark, but no one else
does.

Who says there has to be a sole
owner?-Both the No. 48 (Jimmie Johnson) and the No. 24 (Jeff Gordon) are
. _fielded by Henqrick Motorsports: The
official, listed owner of Johnson's car Is
Gordon, but basically that's because
Gordon. owns a share of Hendrick Mo- •
torsports. Many of the teams are now
corporate entities. One man Is listed 8s
the 'cwmer for the purpose of the owner
points standings, but tha signlffoance
of Gordon owning the ca·r of a team~te is more rrlvfalln practical terms
than it might seem by appearance.

Smaller fuel tanks-mandated for Lowe's Motor SpeedwayBy Monte Dutton
NASCAR This Week

· JUSTIN, Texas - NASCAR
officials are concerned about
speed -and safety during the May
races at Lowe's Motor Speedway, and as a result, they informed the teams on April 7 that14-gallon fuel tanks - as opposed to the 22-gallon tanks curcently in use -would be used
for the Nextel All-Stur Challenge
and the Coca-Cola 600.
There were, of course, an unprecedented number of crashes
and caution flags during the
_races at the track in 2005. In response, LMS has been repaved.
At recent tests, speeds were
significantly up, which didn't
surpdse anyone but made
NASCAR officials a bit wary.'
So why use smaller fuel
tanks? The idea is that, by increasing the number of pjt
stops, the incidence of tire failure will be diminished.
·
"With smaller fuel tanks ,
there won't be 70-lap runs on a
set of tires," said NAS CAR
spokesman Jim Hunter. "Generally the thinking is . that the

pavement and higher speeds, the

where he overcame a serious
