RUTLAND TWP. — The
12th and final Meigs County
Bicentennial Marker was
unveiled on Wednesday evening during a ceremony in
Rutland Township.
The marker pays tribute
to Civil War soldier William
McKnight, who is buried in
Miles Cemetery near where
the marker is placed.
Bicentennial Ambassadors
Brielle Newland and Cooper
Schagel told of McKnight during the ceremony.
McKnight was born in 1832

in New Brunswick, Canada,
and later moved to Rutland
Township with his parents and
siblings. He was a blacksmith
by trade.
In 1855, McKnight married
Samaria Braley and they had
seven children. In 1862, McKnight decided to join the Army.
He was mustered two months
later with Company K of the
7th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry as
2st Sergeant.
“During his time in the
Army, William fought in Kentucky and Tennessee, while
other members of his regiment
fought Morgan’s Raiders in
Ohio. McKnight desperately

wanted to join the other men
in Ohio, but his superiors
refused.
He later found out that while
Morgan’s men were traveling
through Meigs County some
had stayed in his own home.
McKnight wrote a letter to his
wife, expressing his anger of
the situation.
“I would have given anything that I possessed to have
been home when Morgan was
there, for I know you would
feel dreadful streaked to say
nothing of the rest of the
trouble you must have had. I

POMEROY — The Meigs County Commissioners recently approved a resolution declaring Meigs
County to be a “Second Amendment Sanctuary
County.”
This the second time the commissioners have
taken a stand in support of the Second Amendment.
Then commissioners Randy Smith, Tim Ihle and
Michael Bartrum passed a “Second Amendment
Preservation Resolution” in March 2013, following
a public meeting regarding Constitutional rights,
including the Second Amendment.
This time it was commissioners Smith, Ihle and
Jimmy Will who approved the resolution during
their recent weekly meeting.
“In the wake of most publicized shootings the
focus goes straight to the gun. An object that by
itself is incapable of doing harm,” said Smith.
“The focus should be on the mental state of the
person who’s hand is holding the gun. When the

In 1864, McKnight was

killed in the Battle of Cynthiana in Kentucky, leaving
behind his wife and six
children.
His remains were
returned to Meigs County
and buried in Miles Cemetery, near the location of

Newland explained what
sets McKnight apart from
some of his fellow soldiers.
“What sets William McKnight apart from many of
this fellow soldiers is that
historians have found most
of the letters that held his
correspondence with his
family and were made into
a book,” said Newland.
Do They Miss Me at
Home was edited by Donald
C. Maness and H. Jason
Combs and includes 108 letters mostly written by McKnight to his wife between
1862 and 1864 when he was
with the 7th Ohio Volunteer
Cavalry.
In the letters, McKnight
wrote about what he went
through as a soldier and the
battles he participated in.
He also wrote about many
heart wrenching topics
from his duty to serve his
country to desperately missing his family and wishing
for more letters.

Daily Sentinel

Consider Christ for good reason
Officers barked directions. The sounds of
doors being bashed in
and the din of ransacking rumbled down the
streets. Guttural wails
of people reacted to the
maniacal and senseless
destruction.
It undoubtedly left the
community emotionally disconsolate. Some
stood in shock. Others
were filled with outrage.
Utter disbelief boggled
the minds of most as
they stared at the heaps.
Burning grief gripped all.
Perhaps it was the first
born of a young couple.
Perhaps a grandfather
was raising an orphaned
tot. Why two year-olds?
Why infants? Why our
innocent babies?
In the end, a heavy
darkness of emotion,
ripped wide by the cutting edge of grief, settled
over the sorrowing com-

munity as the soldiers
cleansed their stained
blades from the blood of
the little children they
had just killed. This is the
dark and tragic side of the
Christmas account. We
do not talk about it much.
The babes of Bethlehem
died because Herod
sought to snuff out the
life of the Christ child.
Using the Old Testament
Scripture as a map, he
figured where the Child
should be. His brutality was merely temporal
fodder for his soul’s ease
only.
But, let us not lose
sight what this Biblical
birth story of Christ is
trying to communicate to
us. This incident of the
innocents, initially prophetic but eventually prevailing, impresses upon
us compelling spiritual
facts.

truth is that, despite the
unfortunate travesty of
innocent children caught
in the middle of an evil
agenda, it all verifies the
victory of God’s agenda
through the nearing birth
of His Son, Jesus Christ.
It was not the Lord’s time
to die in Bethlehem! Oh,
most certainly, He was
coming to die. However,
His death was divinely
timed for a Cross of sacrifice in Jerusalem, not in
Bethlehem. The “fullness
of time” was set for Jerusalem, not for Bethlehem.
Recently, I held one of
my granddaughters while
standing at the back
atrium door. We were
watching squirrels and
birds flit around looking
for food items. But, suddenly a sobering thought
occurred to me in that
precious moment—-she
would have qualified for
Herod’s slaughter. I was

intensely stirred in my
soul with that disturbing
consideration. I thanked
God for His grace that
she was not there—-that
we were not there.
I cannot answer why
God predicted through
Prophet Jeremiah this
incident of the innocents,
and then allowed it to
happen. I cannot fathom
why mankind is so evil.
But, what it does is to
cause me to want to look
Jesus Christ for the peace
and consolation He brings
to life. It makes me yearn
for the sure hope and
difference-making victory
He gives. It causes me to
depend on Him while living in this contemporary
environment of unwieldy
depravity. I am compelled
to consider Christ—-for
good reason.

“Why would a good
God allow bad things to
happen to good people?”
It’s a question theologians and philosophers
have debated for ages. I
recall sitting in a theology class last year, studying what is often called
the “problem of evil.”
And to this day, humanity struggles to reconcile
evil and God. After all, if
God is all-powerful and
perfect, then why does
evil exist?
Well, my aim this week
is not to write a philosophical analysis of why
evil and suffering exist.
There are much smarter
theologians out there
who can provide much
better answers. But in
continuation of my “Jesus
Understands” series, I
want to ponder a truth
that should really shift
our perspective on pain
and suffering.
You see, Jesus understands suffering.
Let’s think about this
for a moment. During
the Christmas season,
we celebrate God coming to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. We
acknowledge that He
“became flesh and dwelt
among us” (see John
1:14). Which means He
experienced both the
joys and sorrows of being
human.
The Bible says, “Therefore he had to be made
like his brothers in every
respect, so that he might

One of the most conto his disciples, ‘Sit here,

But there’s hope. I’m
not sure what type of
suffering you’re experiencing today. Maybe it’s
physical pain. Maybe it’s
intense anxiety. Maybe
it’s a terminal illness. But
my encouragement to
you is this: Jesus understands.
And Jesus Christ is
coming again one day.
Suffering doesn’t have
the last word. And when
His people enter that new
Jerusalem some glorious
day, “‘He will wipe away
every tear from their
eyes, and death shall be
no more, neither shall
there be mourning, nor
crying, nor pain anymore,
for the former things
have passed away’” (Rev.
21:4 ESV).
No matter what kind of
suffering we face, we can
find comfort in the arms
of a Savior who understands. Why? Because He
came as a baby on that
day we call Christmas.
“For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ
we share abundantly in
comfort too” (2 Cor. 1:5
ESV).

Stars Simmons,
Young lead defenses in
Clemson-Ohio St clash
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — There is little doubt
the nation’s best defensive player will take the field
at the Fiesta Bowl when No 2 Ohio State faces No.
3 Clemson for a trip to the national championship
game.
The only debate for some is which sideline he’s
on.
Buckeyes defensive end Chase Young and Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons have won plenty
of awards and shown the skills that will make
them high NFL draft choices, perhaps as soon as
this spring. The two juniors are key cogs for the
nation’s top two overall defenses, with Clemson
leading the way.
Young led Ohio State (13-0, No. 2 CFP) and the
nation with 16.5 sacks this season on the way to
winning the Hendricks and Bednarik awards. The
6-5, 265-pounder from Maryland was a finalist for
the Heisman Trophy.
Young had four sacks in Ohio State’s first of two
wins over Wisconsin, then had three in a critical
victory against Penn State after missing the previous two games due to suspension.
Young has done all this despite opponents using
extra bodies to get in his way.
“”Teams put a lot more focus on chipping Chase,
putting a guard on Chase, doubling Chase,” said
Buckeyes freshman defensive end Zach Harrison.
It hasn’t really work as Young had 21 tackles for
loss and six forced fumbles despite missing those
two November games.
“When a play has to be made, we make it, get
off the field for the offense,” Young said. “I think
that’s the best thing we can do.”
Clemson’s Simmons has a similar style for the
Tigers (13-0, No. 3 CFP), although no offense
is ever sure if he will line up in the secondary or
closer to the line of scrimmage.
“What he brings to the table is unmatched,”
Tigers safety K’Von Wallace said. “I feel like he’s
changing the style of sports today.”
Simmons, the 6-foot-4, 230-pounder from Kansas, describes himself as a Swiss Army knife, able
to fit and excel wherever Tigers defensive coordinator Brent Venables needs him.
He leads Clemson with 93 tackles, but his versatility and coverage skills show up elsewhere on the
stat sheet: He also tops the team with seven sacks
and seven passes broken up this season.
His play won him the Butkus award along with
the Atlantic Coast Conference defensive player of
the year.
Venables said Simmons was a skinny prospect
who never stopped moving and developed himself
through hard work and studying the game.

Will Grier (7) warms up before the Mountaineers’ home-opener against Youngstown State on Sept. 8, 2018 in Morgantown, W.Va.

Rookie Will Grier will start vs. Colts
CHARLOTTE, N.C.
(AP) — Will Grier grew
up cheering on wide
receiver Steve Smith
from the stands at
Carolina Panthers’ home
games, where his family
had season tickets.
On Sunday, the lifelong Panthers fan will
make his first NFL start
when Carolina visits the
Indianapolis Colts (6-8).
Panthers interim coach
Perry Fewell named
Grier the starter after
Thursday’s practice, an
announcement that was
pretty much a foregone
conclusion after Grier
received all of the firstteam reps this week.
“I’m extremely excited
to go get that game
experience,” Grier said.
“Camp and preseason is
one thing. It’s a grind.
I’m excited to actually
play in a full game.”
Grier replaces Kyle
Allen, who has lost
his past six starts and
thrown 11 interceptions
during that span.
A third-round pick out
of West Virginia, Grier
started the season No.
3 on the depth chart
behind Cam Newton and

ed to develop as well.
Grier said it’s fun getting
a chance to play with the
starters in practice.
“This year it’s been
about how can I get better without taking these
reps,” Grier said. “I
tried to learn how I can
continue to get myself
better. I got to try different things because I
didn’t have to get ready”
to start.
Grier’s most important
task will be taking care
of the football.
Allen had not thrown
an interception in his
first five NFL starts,
but the floodgates have
opened recently with the
second-year QB struggling with turnovers.
Allen’s 22 turnovers in
12 starts this season are
more than Newton has
had in any of his nine
seasons with the Panthers.
“It’s all about making
quick decisions, reading
the defense and taking
what is there and not
trying to press,” Turner
said.
Grier arrived in Carolina already married and
a father.

Allen. He hasn’t played
since the preseason,
where he was 34 of 61
for 385 yards with two
touchdowns and three
interceptions.
With the Panthers out
of playoff contention,
offensive coordinator
Scott Turner said the
time “felt right” to give
Grier a shot and find out
what he can do.
“We think a lot of
Will and that is why we
drafted him where we
did,” Turner said. “We
have been developing
him all year. He has been
ready to go since Week 3
(when he moved into the
backup role). I think it is
just good for him to get
out and play.”
Turner said there will
be no limitations on the
playbook with Grier taking over at quarterback,
adding that “we will run
the plays that work and
he will execute them.”
Grier hasn’t taken
many snaps with the
first team until this week
because the team has
been getting Allen as
much work as possible
in practice since he is a
young QB who has need-

He said that grounded
him and helped him
mature as a person.
“Being a father is an
amazing thing, the best
thing that has ever happened to me,” Grier
said. “It has made me a
better person and gave
me added motivation.
It is great to go home
and have a family that is
going to support you no
matter what.”
Grier grew up in
Davidson, North Carolina, about 20 miles from
the stadium.
His father Chad Grier
was the head football
coach at Davidson Day,
and Grier won three
state titles there and
once threw for 834 yards
and 10 touchdowns in a
104-80 semifinal playoff
win over Harrells Christian.
Panthers tight end
Greg Olsen joked that if
Grier does that again in
the NFL the Panthers
should build him a
statue.
“That was an incredible experience,” Grier
said with a smile. “I
don’t know if I ever
could do that again.”

CINCINNATI (AP) —
The Bengals kept receiver A.J. Green on the
active roster all season,
hoping he could return
from ankle surgery and
put some life back into
their foundering offense.
Turns out that was wishful thinking.
Green said Wednesday he has decided not
to try to play in either
of the final two games
because his ankle isn’t
fully healed.
The club’s most
accomplished player also
warned that he wouldn’t
participate in most offseason practices next
year if the Bengals use
their franchise tag on
him rather than offer a
contract extension that
meets his expectations.
“No, I can’t do that,”
Green said of organized
team activities in the
offseason. “Like I said,
it’s a business. I understand if they franchise
tag me, I can’t put
myself in that situation
to be here.”
Green said he’d like
to stay in Cincinnati
on a multiyear deal. He
can become a free agent
after this season, his
ninth with the Bengals.
Green made the Pro
Bowl each of his first
seven seasons, the first
receiver to do so since
the AFL-NFL merger in
1970. The streak ended
last year when a toe
injury wiped out half of
his season.
This year, he hurt his
left ankle during the
first practice of training
camp in Dayton, landing
awkwardly after cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick
broke up a pass during
a 7-on-7 drill. He had
surgery and was hopeful
of returning before the
season’s midpoint.
The Bengals kept him
on the active roster,
essentially going one
man short, as Green did
his rehabilitation work.
He returned to practice
last month but the foot
bothered him, forcing
him to back off.
Green and the Bengals were hopeful he
might play either next
Sunday in Miami or in
the final game at Paul
Brown Stadium against
the Cleveland Browns.
He changed his mind

this week after visiting
the doctor who performed the surgery for a
checkup.
“It’s unfortunate that
it was a very difficult
injury that’s hard to
come back from,” coach
Zac Taylor said. “At
the end of the day, your
wishful thinking was
that it wasn’t going to be
so long-term, but there
was really no way of
knowing that.”
Green said he doesn’t
have full range of motion
in the ankle yet.
“I came to the decision it’s best for me just
to take this year off, just
to get this thing healed
so in the long run for
the next couple years of
my career, I won’t have
no problems,” he said.
The Bengals (1-13)
are the only NFL team
with one win. With one
more loss, they would
clinch the top pick in the
draft, giving them the
chance to take Heisman
Trophy winner Joe Burrow or another quarterback.
Green reiterated that
he would like to stay in
Cincinnati, where he
has teamed with Andy
Dalton since 2011 to
set many of the club’s
receiving records. Dalton has one year left on
his contract and was
benched for three games
earlier this season as the
Bengals started exploring their long-term quarterback options.
“I really like the
thought of A.J. catching
balls for us,” Taylor said.
“That’s something that
gets me really excited.”
If the Bengals can’t
agree on a new deal
with Green, they could
use their franchise tag
on him to keep him for
2020 at $18 million.
Green said Wednesday
he’d consider that an
indication the club
doesn’t want him around
long-term, so he would
have to protect himself
by skipping offseason
workouts — even if the
Bengals were breaking
in a new quarterback.
“Every business has
to make difficult decisions,” Green said. “For
me, I’m in my own business so I have to make
decisions on my end as
well.”

Jaguars fire Coughlin
amid 3rd season,
following NFLPA shot
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
(AP) — The Jacksonville
Jaguars fired top executive Tom Coughlin on
Wednesday, parting ways
with the two-time Super
Bowl-winning coach a little more than a day after
the NFL Players Union
took a sledgehammer to
his reputation.
Coughlin served as
executive vice president
of football operations
since 2017. It was his
second stint with Jacksonville, the expansion
franchise he helped build
from the ground up in the
mid-1990s.
The unbending taskmaster had been in trouble for weeks because of
the team’s sagging record
and several questionable roster moves. The
NFLPA seemingly forced
owner Shad Khan’s hand
after an arbitrator’s decision to undo millions in
fines imposed by Coughlin himself.
The NFLPA said Monday that more than 25%
of player grievances filed
in the last two years have
been against the Jaguars.
The union’s take: “You as
players may want to consider this when you have
a chance to select your
next club.”
“I determined earlier
this fall that making this
move at the conclusion
of the 2019 season would
be in everyone’s best
interests,” Khan said in a
statement. “But, in recent
days, I reconsidered and
decided to make this
change immediately.
“I thank Tom for his
efforts, not only over the
past three years but for all
he did from our very first
season, 25 years ago, to
put the Jacksonville Jaguars on the map.”
Khan said general
manager Dave Caldwell
and head coach Doug
Marrone will each report
directly to him on an
interim basis.
“My expectations, and
those of our fans, for our
final two games and the
2020 season are high,”
Khan added.
The NFLPA grievances
are a product of Coughlin’s peccadillos, many of
which come from a good
place — that of an old-

school coach who always
believed that football was
more than just a business.
But the rules that once
seemed trifling — no sunglasses, all meetings start
5 minutes early — took a
more sinister tone since
Coughlin’s return. He was
still basking in the glow
of two Super Bowl titles
during his in-between
stay as coach of the New
York Giants that painted
him as a man who had
truly changed his ways.
He fined defensive
end Dante Fowler more
than $700,000 in 2018
for missing “mandatory”
appointments at the facility during the offseason.
Problem was, the appointments weren’t really
mandatory — a reality
cooked into the rule book
after some hard-fought
wins by the union in collective bargaining about
how much time players
were obliged to spend at
team headquarters in the
offseason.
Coughlin and the Jaguars have been on the
wrong end of other highprofile battles against
players — involving running back Leonard Fournette, cornerback Jalen
Ramsey and now-retired
defensive end Jared
Odrick. All involved
fines or criticism of
players who didn’t act
the way Coughlin liked,
or failed to show up to
voluntary sessions that
the old coach always
believed weren’t really
voluntary.
The pushback against
Coughlin was as much
a sign of the attitudes
of players in the late
2010s as it is of their
willingness to blindly
follow a leader who
hadn’t proven himself
to them — regardless of
whatever message those
Super Bowl rings might
have delivered.
As much as creating
a mindset, ultimately,
Coughlin was brought
back to build a championship roster. In his first
year back, it was trending that way, much the
same as it was in the late
1990s, when he took the
expansion franchise to
the AFC title game twice
in four years.

Red Sox, Yanks, Cubs sent 2019 luxury tax bills
NEW YORK (AP) — Boston
will pay a Red Sox record $13.4
million luxury tax after failing to
make the playoffs and the New
York Yankees finished with a $6.7
million bill, likely a fraction of
what they will pay next year.
Three teams owe tax, according to end-of-year figures sent to
clubs Wednesday and obtained
by The Associated Press. The
Chicago Cubs must pay $7.6 million following a season that ended
with a September fade and no
postseason berth.
New York has run up a total
of $348 million in tax since the
payroll restraint system began in
2003, owing money in each year
except 2018. The Los Angeles
Dodgers are second at $150 million, followed by the Red Sox at
$50 million and the Cubs at $11
million.
This year’s initial tax threshold was $206 million, counting
payrolls by average annual values
and including earned bonuses,
adjustments for cash transactions,
option buyouts and just over $14
million per team in benefits.
Among regular payrolls, which
include salaries, prorated shares

of signing bonuses and earned
bonuses, the Red Sox topped
the major leagues for the second
straight season at $228 million.
The Yankees were next at $226
million, followed by the Cubs
($220 million), World Series
champion Washington ($205 million) and the Los Angeles Dodgers ($205 million).
Five of the top 10 spenders
missed the playoffs, with the
Red Sox and Cubs joined by San
Francisco ($183 million), the Los
Angeles Angels ($166 million)
and Philadelphia ($161 million).
Just two teams from the dozen
lowest payrolls reached the postseason. Tampa Bay (last at $67
million) defeated Oakland (26th
at $96 million) in the AL wildcard game, then lost to Houston
in a five-game Division Series.
Overall spending on regular
payrolls dropped for the third
straight year, an aberration
caused by large signing bonuses
for Mike Trout, Alex Bregman,
Jacob deGrom, Paul Goldschmidt,
Clayton Kershaw, Manny Machado and A.J. Pollock. Those bonuses are prorated over the length
of each contract, and payrolls

totaled $4.219 billion, down from
$4.227 billion in 2018 and $4.245
billion in 2017.
But teams set a record at $4.7
billion in the computation by average annual values, an increase of
$157 million that follows the longer-term trend. That came after
an offseason when the clubs committed $3.88 billion in guaranteed
money, their biggest spending
spree ever. Atlanta, Cincinnati,
Colorado, Houston, Milwaukee,
Oakland, San Diego and St. Louis
had their highest AAV payrolls.
Among regular payrolls, which
better display year-to-year shifts,
Detroit dropped from $191 million in 2017 to $133 million in
2018 to $117 million this year.
Baltimore cut from $167 million
in 2017 to $137 million in 2018 to
$83 million this year.
Toronto fell from $165 million
in 2017 to $157 million in 2018 to
$120 million this year, and Kansas
City from $154 million in 2017
to $127 million in 2018 to $102
million this season. Under new
CEO Derek Jeter, Miami shaved
from $117 million in 2017 to $90
million in 2018 to $76 million this
year.
