The former automotive dealership was sold to Ted Dexter who plans to move his car dealership to the property.

Property will once again be auto dealership
By Sarah Hawley
shawley@aimmediamidwest.com

POMEROY — The
former auto dealership
property located at 308
East Main Street in
Pomeroy will once again
be a dealership after the
commissioners approved
the sale of the property
on Monday morning.
Following a 46 minute
executive session regarding the sale of property, the commissioners
approved the sale at a
price of $660,000 to Ted

Dexter. Dexter was one
of the original bidders on
the property.
Dexter said he plans
to move his dealership,
Wheels and Deals, from
its current location in
Middleport to the new
site in Pomeroy. The
new location will also
include the office for his
trucking company, Ted
Dexter Trucking, which
is currently located in
Pomeroy.
With the new, larger
location, Dexter said he
plans to offer full service

for vehicles, including
tires, oil change, brakes
and other services on
site.
The commissioners
paid $775,000 when
purchasing the property
in October 2014. Since
that time it was leased
to Mark Porter on two
occasions, with the lease
price varying. Porter
put more than $150,000
into renovation work
at the building during
that lease, according to
the commissioners. The
property has been vacant

since Porter’s Chrysler
Dodge Jeep Ram dealership opened at its new
location last year.
The property has been
the home of two different
dealerships owned and
operated by Mark Porter,
and was the Don Tate
dealership before that.
The paperwork finalizing the purchase agreement between the county
and Dexter was to be
completed on Monday.
The timetable for the
move from Middleport
has not been announced.

finish paying for new uniforms that were recently

now members of the Wahama

are depending on the community to help them realize their
goal of getting new uniforms.
The uniforms cost $650
each, with the total coming to
nearly $41,000, according to
Band Director Matthew Bradley. They will replace ones that

COLUMBUS — The Ohio
Department of Health reported
last week that there have been
more than 4,400 hospitalizations due to flu in Ohio during
the 2019-2020 flu season. Older
adults are at increased risk of
complications from the flu, which
can include pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus infections, and more.
Flu can also make chronic health
conditions like asthma and heart
failure worse. These complications can lead to serious illness
and even death.
The Ohio Department of Aging
advises older Ohioans and anyone who spends time with older
adults to take steps to avoid get-

ting and spreading the flu.
“Each older Ohioan should
take every precaution possible to
protect themselves from the flu.
This includes getting a flu shot
and adopting healthy habits,”
said Ursel McElroy, director of
the Ohio Department of Aging.
“Likewise, anyone who lives with
or cares for an older adult should
take steps to prevent getting the
flu and passing it to those around
them.”
Flu season is typically from
October through May in Ohio.
The Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention has designated
current flu activity in Ohio as
“widespread.” The Ohio Department of Health called the flu
Ohio’s primary infectious disease

threat.
It is not too late to get a flu shot.
A shot today can provide protection for the remainder of the season. Shots are still widely available
and are covered by Medicare Part
B with no copay for adults age 65
and older.
Much attention is being given to
the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019
nCoV). Ohio health officials point
out that Ohioans are much more
likely to get sick from the flu than
2019 nCoV. However, the general
public can take the usual, recommended actions to prevent infection.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Koreans
reacted with rare collective joy Monday after
director Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” won the
Oscar for best picture and three other awards,
good news that came as their country struggles
to guard against a new virus and counter North
Korea’s nuclear threat.
The movie’s wins made history in both the
Hollywood and South Korean film industries.
The class satire is the first non-English-language film to win best picture in the 92-year
history of the Academy Awards, and is the first
South Korean movie to ever win an Oscar.
“Can you believe that ‘Parasite’ won the
Academy best picture?” South Korea’s biggest
newspaper, Chosun Ilbo, said in a headline. “It
rewrote the Academy’s 92-year-old history.”
South Korean social media were overwhelmed
with congratulatory messages. Bong, “Parasite”
and other Oscar-related news also dominated
search terms throughout Monday at major
internet portal sites, which had been preoccupied with the outbreak of a virus in China that
has killed more than 900 people and sickened
tens of thousands of others, mainly in China.
Worries about the virus have been growing in
South Korea, where 27 cases have been reported, though no deaths have occurred. Sales at
tour agencies, restaurants, movie theaters and
department stores have sharply declined, raising worries about the impact on South Korea’s
already-lagging economy. Opposition parties
are accusing the government of ineffectiveness
in coping with the outbreak.
But the concerns about the virus and political warfare eased Monday to celebrate Bong’s
wins.
“It’s happy news, like welcome rain, to the
Republic of Korea, which is depressed, stagnant
and thrown into despair due to Wuhan pneumonia,” the main opposition Liberty Korea Party
said in a statement. Wuhan is the Chinese city
at the center of the outbreak.
President Moon Jae-in and his advisers began
a regularly scheduled meeting by clapping their
hands to celebrate Bong’s wins. Moon later
tweeted that he is proud of Bong and his staff
and “particularly grateful to them for giving
courage and pride to our people who are overcoming difficulties.”
“I think this was a great opportunity to let
the world know the true value of Korean movies,” said office worker Cho Sung-ho, 54. “I
think it is very meaningful that the Academy
Award this time has acknowledged the superior
quality of Korean films.”
U.S. Ambassador Harry Harris, who said
watched the Academy Awards ceremony with
embassy staff, tweeted, “Wow! Congrats Director Bong, Team #Parasite & ROK cinema!”
At Bong’s alma mater, Seoul’s Yonsei University, students belonging to a school movie
club watched the Academy Award ceremony
together.
“It’s deeply meaningful for Korean movies
and this will open the path for further development. It’s such a great honor. I’m speechless,”
said Kim Nam-hoon, 21.
Jeong Ho-cheol, a 26-year-old student,
praised Bong for pleasing both movie critics and crowds. “His way of dealing with the
underside of Korean society and problems such
as rich-poor gaps and the way he expresses
those issues are very expressive,” he said.

New meaning for

The festival of Lupercalia was a Roman celebration, and I am told that while it survived early

Has Valentine’s Day changed
through the years? Yes. In more
ways than one. Remember when you
were a kid in school and your classmates would
exchange Valentines? Remember how happy you
would be to receive more Valentines than the
other kids? Or how sad you would be if you didn’t
receive as many as the other children? Well, fast

was show up. My mother did the work, so I always
thought she should get the flowers and presents.
After childhood, Valentine’s Day didn’t mean
much to me either. I just felt it was another day to
enhance the economy and little more. However,
try handing that to your wife guys. Just kidding,
don’t try that! Remember that motel room for one?
You may need it again.
When I discovered how much it meant to my
wife, I eventually fell in line (eventually the operative word here. I’m not a quick study). Remember,
“Happy wife, Happy Life!” Oh, don’t misunderstand me, I am not to Don Juan (ask your parents.

get into the spirit of the whole Valentine’s Day
thing. Of course, it helps having the Hallmark

bad place to get some ideas as to what she likes.
Day-to-day life has us so busy that we often forget about that person we share our life with. We
work so hard trying to keep up with the bills, the
kids, and the appointments that not only do we
not always remember the needs of our mate, but
we can forget about our own. When that happens,
we are way too busy.
When you look at it in those terms, birthdays,
Sweetest Day, anniversaries, and yes, Valentine’s
Day does serve a purpose other than revenue
enhancement for the national economy.
Perhaps those days are reminders that we should
stop for a moment, take a breath and look at the
people who share our lives. That husband or wife
who works just as hard, maybe even harder than
you do to make it all come together.
I always used to joke with my pals that their
wives deserve an award of some kind for “putting
up” with them all these years. But then I look at
my wife, and I realize that is a true statement. She
does deserve an award for her hard work on the
job, in our home, with our kids, our grandkids and
for putting up with me.
Yes, Valentine’s Day has changed through the
years, but maybe the biggest change is how I see
it.
So, to my friend, my confidant, my lover, my
wife, Patty, Happy Valentine’s Day.

Perennial gardens step by step
For the home gardener,
the term Perennial means
a plant with stems that
usually die back in winter
and a root system from
which new foliage and
flowers grow the following year. Most perennials
have herbaceous stems,
but a few have woody
stems.
Landscape beds are
usually mixed plantings
incorporating annuals,
perennials, shrubs and
trees. Shrubs and trees
provide the “backbone”
of the landscape as well
as winter interest, while
annuals are used as yearround complementary
color. In general, there

Inadequate drainage in

While working for

2020 Faith & Family
Faith and Family is a project designed to reach out to
people in need and at the same time reach out to the
community with a message of hope. We want to form
a stronger alliance with the church community and do
more meaningful job of helping local churches spread
their message to people who are looking for answers and
inspiration. We need your help to do this.
We will publish an inspirational full color magazine that we have entitled Faith and Family. This publication,
with your help, will list all our churches and carry a message of hope. As your local newspaper we want
to use our resources to help get your message to those in need. The magazine will carry profiles of local
churches and testimonials from local readers who have experienced a change in life as the result of their
faith and beliefs. These stories can be a powerful influence in raising the consonances of the reader looking
for answers and in need of a church to help heal. This publication will also increase the strength and unity
among the local church community.

Clippers hand Cavs worst home loss in history
IN BRIEF

CLEVELAND (AP) — The
presence of Andre Drummond
began the night with optimism
for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
That positive feeling was
quickly dashed by a 133-92 loss
Sunday to the Los Angeles Clippers, the Cavaliers’ worst home
defeat in franchise history.
“Tonight was pretty ugly, so
show ‘em your worst first and
you only can go up from there,”
Kevin Love said.
Drummond started in his
first game with Cleveland after
being acquired from Detroit at
the trade deadline. He scored
19 points, had 14 rebounds and
even hit a pair of 3-pointers in
29 minutes.
Drummond’s numbers weren’t
nearly enough as the Clippers
led wire-to-wire without star
forward Kawhi Leonard. Cleveland’s previous worst was a
39-point loss to Chicago in 2012.
Lou Williams scored 25 points,
Paul George had 22 and Marcus

percent in the first quarter, making 14 of 20 from the field.
“There are nights for whatever
reason, it’s the perfect storm,”
Rivers said. “Last night was one
of those. You just move on from
it.”
Morris knocked Drummond
to the floor with a hard foul as
Cleveland’s center tried to score
in the third quarter. The play
was upgraded to a flagrant foul
after a review.
Morris’ final game with the
Knicks came in Cleveland on
Feb. 3. He scored 26 points in
New York’s overtime win.
“That was cool, man,” Morris said of his debut. “The guys
made the game easy. I asked
them before the game where
they liked the ball and they
asked me where I wanted it.”

New XFL kicks off
with entertaining
debut in DC
WASHINGTON (AP) — The debut of the new
XFL had a punt blocked for a touchdown, a juiced-up
crowd roaring for big plays and a player swearing during an in-game television interview.
The actual football was hit and miss. College
national championship-winning former Ohio State
quarterback Cardale Jones was the biggest star on the
field and took the microphone to address fans before
the start of a brand-new football league.
“This is for the love of football,” Jones said. “Enjoy.”
Jones’ D.C. Defenders beat the Seattle Dragons
31-19 Saturday afternoon in the opener of the new
XFL that provided plenty of entertainment in person
and on TV. It’s far too early to tell if the XFL can take
a foothold where its previous incarnation and the
recently unsuccessful Alliance of American Football
failed, but executives are willing to wait and see.
“For us, if the fans who attend and watch at home
feel as though it was a good football game and they
had a fun time either watching or being in this awesome venue with us, that’s success,” XFL chief operating officer Jeffrey Pollack said. “We’re taking a long
term view in this. Success ultimately will not be measured in the first game or the first weekend or the first
season.”
The first weekend is a chance for football fans to
catch a glimpse of some of the few players they might
recognize. There’s former Oklahoma quarterback
Landry Jones with Dallas, former NFL QB Josh Johnson with San Diego and ex-Navy standout Keenan
Reynolds playing for Seattle.
It’s not the star power of the NFL, but billionaire
Vince McMahon’s latest venture is an attempt to
capture the attention of hardcore football fans in the
aftermath of the Super Bowl.
“Our expectation for this first season is for football
fans to simply give us a look, give us a chance, sample
us,” Pollack said. “We understand that fandom is
earned. It’s not given. … We think that if you love football, you’re going to love the XFL.”
In the league opener, a crowd of 17,163 almost
filled up Audi Field, home of Major League Soccer’s
D.C. United. There was a buzz around the stadium
in the hours before the XFL’s debut, with cars lining up to enter parking lots and fans checking out a
league-sponsored tailgate. Fans were already sporting
Dragons and Defenders gear and queued up in long
concession lines at halftime.
“I didn’t have real expectations going into the game
as far as what the experience was going to be like,”
Cardale Jones said. “If I did … they would’ve been
blown away.”
The location of the first game made sense in the
neighborhood of the NFL’s Washington Redskins, who
haven’t won the Super Bowl since 1992 and have just
one playoff victory in the past 20 seasons. Fan-made
signs mocking the “Hail to the Redskins” slogan and
asking Redskins owner Dan Snyder to sell the team
were draped from a balcony at the 50-yard line.
The broadcast included in-game interviews with a
kicker seconds after he missed a field goal attempt
and a defender involved in a scrum that led to a penalty. Seattle’s Dillon Day dropped an F-bomb that made
it to the airwaves and went viral.
On the field, the play was a mix of traditional college and pro style with some different twists.

Jones fends off challenge at UFC 247
HOUSTON (AP) — Jon Jones
retained his title at UFC 247,
beating Dominick Reyes by unanimous decision.
After the bout, opinions on the
outcome were anything but unanimous.
Jones retained his light heavyweight belt Saturday night following a surprisingly strong opening by Reyes. The unanimous
decision of 48-47, 48-47, 49-46
was met with scattered applause
and loud boos from the crowd,
as many felt the challenger had
proven enough to take the title.
UFC President Dana White
addressed what turned out to be a
disputed decision.
“The scoring was all over the
map,” said White, noting that
he thought Reyes had a 3-1 edge
entering the final round. “My kids
are terrorizing me that, ‘The fix is
in, how did this happen?’
“People had it all over the place,
but the reality is … we’re not judges. The judges call the fight, and

that’s that. As far as the judging
and the reffing tonight, do I think
it was perfect? I do not. We need
to do some work down here.”
White said UFC can work with
the Texas commission to help
improve the quality of judging
and officiating.
“I do feel disrespected,” Reyes
said. “One of the judges had it
49-46. Who are you? I might want
to have a word with you. I know I
won that fight.”
White said he believes Reyes
deserves a rematch.
Jones faced his most serious
challenge in years.
“I wasn’t always confident that
I was winning the fight,” Jones
said. “I was confident that I
wasn’t going to give up or slow
down. I think I displayed the
difference between a champion
and an extraordinary contender.
Something special happens when
it’s time for the champion to present himself, and you guys saw it
tonight in the fifth round.”

Preseason No. 1 Michigan St out of Top 25
By John Marshall
Associated Press

The NCAA initial
rankings had little
impact at the top of
the AP Top 25, but a
three-game losing streak
knocked preseason No.
1 Michigan State out of
the poll.
Baylor remained No. 1
in The Associated Press
men’s college basketball
poll released Monday,
two days after being
the top overall seed in
the NCAA Division I
Basketball Committee’s
preliminary rankings.
The Bears received 48
first-place votes from a
64-person media panel.
Gonzaga remained at
No. 2 and received 15
first-place votes despite
being the No. 3 overall
seed behind Kansas
in the NCAA rankings
released Saturday.
The Jayhawks had
one first-place vote and
San Diego State, the
lone remaining undefeated team in Division
I, stayed at No. 4 after
being slotted as the

No. 1 seed in the East
Region of the NCAA
Tournament.
Louisville remained
No. 5 during a week
in which No. 10 Seton
Hall, which moved up
two places, was the only
addition to the top 10.
The biggest change:
Preseason No. 1 Michigan State dropped out
of the poll from No. 16,
thanks to a three-game
losing streak.
The Spartans have
struggled with Joshua
Langford out because
of a foot injury and star
Cassius Winston grieving after his brother was
killed just before the season started.
Michigan State lost to
rival Michigan on Saturday to become the first
team since Kentucky in
2013-14 to drop out of
the poll after being the
preseason No. 1.
“We’ve been in every
game but one,” Michigan
State coach Tom Izzo
said. “And yet, we get
close like that, cut big
leads … it’s almost like
we go brain dead then,

Jones (26-1-1) handed the
fourth-ranked Reyes (12-1) his
first loss, improving to 14-0 in
title fights. He became the alltime leader in UFC title defenses,
breaking the record previously
held by Georges St-Pierre.
“I don’t think he was disrespected,” Jones said of Reyes. “I’ve
got to watch the fight though. It’s
hard to speak with confidence
when I haven’t watched the fight.”
Jones was fighting for the first
time since last July’s win over
Thiago Santos at UFC 239, his
longest period between fights in
more than five years.
Reyes came out on the attack
in the first round, briefly knocking Jones to the ground less

Jones bounced back in the second
round, landing several strong

The lively crowd swayed back
and forth in support of either

and that’s got to change.”
The NCAA created
the initial rankings as
a sneak peek into the
selection process ahead
of Selection Sunday on
March 13.
The basketball committee had Baylor (21-1,
10-0 Big 12) as the No. 1
seed in the South Region
based on games through
Friday. The Bears beat
Oklahoma State 78-70
on Saturday and became
the first team in this season of parity to remain
at No. 1 four straight
weeks.
Baylor is the first Big
12 team since Kansas in
2008 to win 20 consecutive games and has its
longest conference winning streak since opening 10-0 in 1948.
The NCAA slotted
Kansas as the No. 1 seed
in the Midwest Region
and the Jayhawks followed with a 14-point
victory over TCU on
Saturday.
Gonzaga, the No. 1
seed in the West, turned
its rivalry game against
Saint Mary’s into a

laugher, handing the
Gaels their worst home
loss in 19 years with a
90-60 victory in Moraga.
The Zags have won 17
straight since losing to
Michigan on Nov. 29.
San Diego State
earned a No. 1 seed from
the NCAA, but because
the Aztecs were slotted
behind Gonzaga, they
were No. 1 in the East
Region across the country in New York.

No. 10 Seton Hall
has matched its highest
ranking since climbing
to No. 7 in 2000-01.

Powell, a senior, has
lived up to the billing
as one of college basketball’s best players this
season, averaging 21.9

He had 19 points in the
Pirates’ 70-64 victory
over Villanova, snapping a 17-game road
losing streak to the
Wildcats.

LeBron among 44 US Olympic team finalists
By Tim Reynolds

8 AM

WEATHER

2 PM

LeBron James is considering a return to the
Olympics.
James — a two-time
gold medalist and
three-time Olympian
— is among 44 players announced by USA
Basketball on Monday
as finalists for the team
that will play in the
Tokyo Games this summer. James played in
2004, 2008 and 2012,
helping the U.S. win
gold in his most recent
two appearances.
The pool includes 19
players who have won a
total of 31 gold medals
in either Olympic or
World Cup competition for the Americans
— including nine players who captured the
Olympic title for USA
Basketball in Rio de
Janeiro four years ago.
“I’ve always maintained that equity is
important,” USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo
told The Associated
Press. “And you earn
equity by participating.
So, we think they’ve
earned the right to be
named to the overall
roster for USA Basketball. It’s pretty elite.
It’s a tremendous pot
and the good news is
they’ve all said they
want to play.”
James has played in
68 games for the U.S.
national team and has
said several times over
the past year or so that
he is thinking about
another Olympics —
after sitting out the Rio
Games for a variety
of reasons. Part of the
interest in participating
this summer is to have
the chance to play for
U.S. coach Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio

Spurs.
“It’s a possibility,”
James said in December.
There will be no
tryouts. USA Basketball will pare the list
down to a 12-person
Olympic team by early
June, those decisions
to be made by a selection committee — and
to be based in part on
player availability and
health. Training camp
will start in early July,
potentially as little as
two weeks after the end
of the NBA Finals. The
Olympics start July 24.
USA Basketball officials, including Colangelo and Popovich of
the San Antonio Spurs,
have met with players
in a variety of ways
over the past several
weeks. Some talks have
been directly with players, some with their
agents, some with their
NBA clubs, sometimes
a combination thereof
— and, Colangelo
noted, there were some
instances where players
reached out directly to
express interest.
If they’re on the list,
that means USA Basketball is convinced
they want to play.
“I feel very good
about the response,”
Colangelo said.
Also included in the
pool: 15 of the 16 players from the U.S. who
are scheduled to play
in Sunday’s NBA AllStar Game, and all 12
members of the team
that represented the
U.S. at last summer’s
Basketball World Cup
in China — where the
Americans managed
only a seventh-place
finish after roughly
three dozen players
who were on the list
at some point dropped
out along the way.

Associated Press

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The first race
of the NASCAR season was a demolition derby that
turned Daytona International Speedway into a giant
junkyard.
The Busch Clash? More like the Busch Crash.
Erik Jones won Sunday’s race that left a multimillion dollar trail of destruction and masked the
fact the Clash was a made-for-TV exhibition race.
Only 18 cars were entered and only six were on track
when the checkered flag flew at the end of a third
overtime.
Jones crossed the finish line in a Toyota with a
crumpled hood after a huge push from Joe Gibbs
Racing teammate and defending Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin.
“I’ve got to give a huge thanks to Denny there …
he stuck with us there that whole last lap,” Jones
said. “It wasn’t the fastest car I don’t think left in the
race, but we brought it home. I owe him one for that
one, for sure.”
Hamlin was a lap down after a blown tire on the
previous overtime attempt caused him to crash half
the cars remaining on track, but he had enough
speed to push Jones along the outside and give
Gibbs yet another win. The Gibbs organization won
19 races last year, went 1-2-3 in the Daytona 500 and
won the Cup Series title.
Joe Gibbs is now the all-time winningest owner in
Busch Clash history with nine victories.
Brad Keselowski was among those incensed by the
aggressive late blocking. The race was fairly anticlimactic until two wrecks in the final nine laps sent
it into overtime, and as Keselowski railed against the
racing that ended his day, Hamlin got a flat tire as
the leader on a restart and collected most of the cars
on track.
“Dumb, dumb racing,” said Keselowski, who
slapped the side of an ambulance with both hands in
frustration. “We shouldn’t be wrecking all these cars.
You’d think these guys would be smarter than that.
It’s the same thing over and over, somebody throws
a stupid block that’s never going to work and wrecks
half the field.
“I don’t know. Maybe we need to take the helmets
out of these cars and the seat belts out. Somebody
will get hurt, and then we’ll stop driving like (expletive).”
Kyle Busch, collected in the accident that ended
Keselowski’s day when teammate Joey Logano tried
to block Busch, said the crashes are a product of
superspeedway racing.
