Joe Keith Roberts, age 77, of Bidwell, died Sunday November 5, 2023 at home, in the arms of the love of his life, his wife Cheryln. Born October 19, 1946 in Gallipolis, he was the son of the late Robert Earl Roberts Jr. and Rachel Ruth Wells Roberts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his brother, Robert H. Roberts and granddaughter Allison.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryln whom he married August 6, 1981; children, Lori DeVine of St Mary’s, J. Keith Roberts of Lancaster, Jennifer McGinness of Vinton, Jonathan (Shay) Roberts of Southside, WV, Jeremy (Jodie) Roberts of Bidwell and Mandy Wills of Gallipolis; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and by a sister- in- law, Sherry Roberts of Gallipolis.
Joe was a 1964 graduate of Gallia Academy High School. In June 1964 he joined the Army, during which time he served 2 tours in Vietnam, with the 1st Infantry, as a 2nd Helicopter gunship pilot with the 191st Assault Helicopter Company (AHC). His group were the 191st Bounty Hunters, Joe was Bounty Hunter #35 and he was very proud to be in this group. Joe was a highly decorated Vietnam Veteran, who when someone said, thank you for your service, he would always reply,” I was just doing my job”. He never felt like a hero, but he was, and not just to his family. His military awards and commendations include, 3 purple hearts with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, Army Commendation with Oak Leaf Cluster, 2 bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses, Silver Star, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Bronze Star. He was discharged from the Army in July of 1974.
Joe graduated from Rio Grande College in 1982 with a degree in Business Administration. He retired from the Gallipolis Post Office after 35 years of service in 2011. He always enjoyed traveling and attending his 191st AHC reunions.
Funeral services will be 7:00 PM. Saturday November 11, 2023 at the Waugh-Halley-Wood Funeral Home with Pastor Heath Jenkins officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 4:00 PM. to 7:00 PM As per Joe’s wishes, cremation will follow and a graveside service with Full Military Honors will be done at the convenience of the family.
