Doctors have also

So with this in

Benefit to help raise money
for local girl with Spinal Bifida
By Lindsay Kriz

lkriz@civitasmedia.com

MASON, W.Va. —
When Shanda Forbes
Harris learned that her
fetus would be born
with Spinal Bifida,
doctors gave her the
option of aborting
the child, which she
declined to do.
Months later, she
gave birth to a girl,
Hayden Grace Davis,
who is now 4 and is
paralyzed from the hips
down.
“It was the best decision she ever made,”
Bill Davis, Hayden’s
grandfather, said.
“(Hayden is) such a
blessing to us.”
According to Spinalbifidaassocation.
org, Spinal Bifida
occurs when a fetus’
womb does not close
all the way, allowing

spinal fluid to escape.
For Hayden, the hole
was at the bottom of
her spine, affecting
her lower extremities.
As she aged, Hayden
began to use a walker,
and then this spring,
began to use crutches.
“She does awesome
with them,” Bill said.
“When she falls, she
doesn’t want anybody
to help her get up. She
has pride about that.
We just believe God’s
going to do awesome
work in her. He’s not
done with her yet.”
Bill said his special
relationship with his
granddaughter began
when she was only
a few months old,
and the family had to
make long drives to
Nationwide Children’s
Hospital in Columbus.
Hayden would often
cry, and when her

THEIR VIEW

A setback
for private
spaceflight?
A rocket launch is essentially several tons of
hardware lifted skyward by a prolonged, controlled
explosion.
It’s incredibly dangerous. That’s why the early
years of America’s space program, before astronauts were strapped into capsules, were punctuated by fiery launchpad accidents. That’s why the
shuttle Challenger blew up in 1986, killing seven
crew members.
It’s also why

space ventures.
Such things
have happened before.
On Oct. 28, unmanned Antares rocket blew up
just after liftoff at Wallops Island, Va. A few days
later, a vehicle called SpaceShipTwo, which Virgin
Galactic had hoped would ferry wealthy tourists
to the edge of space, broke up during a test flight
over the Mojave Desert. One crewman died.
Orbital Sciences Corp. operated the Antares
under a $1.9 billion NASA contract to bring supplies to the International Space Station. Although
previous flights had been trouble-free, the Oct.
28 explosion “dealt a setback to the commercial
spaceflight effort championed by NASA and the
White House,” The Associated Press reported.
The setback will be fleeting. For one thing, the
United States doesn’t have many options. The
shuttle fleet is retired and the U.S. is weary of paying the Russians for rocket rides.
For another, NASA has had its own space failures, as noted above. Explosions aren’t unique to
the private sector.
For still another, NASA has historically contracted with private firms such as Boeing to build
rockets. Private firms have always been involved,
to varying degrees, in spaceflight.
Space analyst Charles Lurio told AP, “We can’t
allow … the Antares vehicle loss to smear space
commercialization in Washington and on (Capitol)
Hill.”
Indeed we can’t. Private ventures are the future
of space exploration. Better luck to those planning
the next commercial cargo flight, and to Virgin
Galactic on its cautious steps toward space tourism.

Viewed through this prism,
politically correct speech codes
can be seen as twisted mandates
for a kind of politeness. The new
rules on campus against sexual
assault can be viewed as an indirect attempt to recover older
attitudes toward sex. And the push
by Hollaback! to criminalize catcalling can be considered an effort
to impose basic propriety in public
by force of law.
Of course, no legal regime can
substitute for the web of informal
rules and private institutions, family foremost among them, that are
civilization’s tried-and-true methods of inculcating standards.
And outlawing catcalling is obviously insane. Who determines
the offense? Are we really going
to have cops deciding if a “Have
a nice day!” was overly exuberant and pointedly directed at an
attractive woman, or an innocent
expression of cheery good will?
Maybe this is what New York City
police officers can do with all the
time they have on their hands now
that they are less occupied with
trying to find illegal guns.
In making its case that catcalling
should be illegal, Hollaback! drones
on about the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s
definitions of harassment and other
legalisms. Fundamentally, though,
what it wants on the streets is
something that sounds embarrassingly retrograde: good manners.
Shouldn’t we all?

According to BSA official records,
only about six percent of all Boy Scouts
achieved the rank of Eagle in 2013. Stuart noted that scouting is a tradition in
his family, with his dad, several uncles
and cousins all former Scouts, and his
deceased grandfather, George E. Holman, an active Scoutmaster in Meigs
County for many years.
On finally reaching his goal, Stuart said, “Becoming an Eagle Scout
feels good. Thanks to all the people
who’ve helped me on my scouting
journey. I feel like I’ve completed
something great, and I know that all
my hard work has paid off.”

in NAIA Men’s or

become the first NAIA

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brain Hoyer, left, avoids the rush of Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Devon Still during the fourth
quarter at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio, on Sunday, September 29, 2013. The Browns won, 17-6.

Biggest Ohio game since 1986
CINCINNATI (AP) — The Browns
and Bengals were playing for first
place late in the 1986 season. Bernie
Kosar set the tone on the first play,
throwing a long completion to Reggie
Langhorne at Riverfront Stadium.
Marty Schottenheimer’s team pulled
away to a 34-3 victory that day. Sam
Wyche’s Bengals couldn’t get anything
going — not even with Boomer Esiason throwing to Cris Collinsworth —
as the Browns dominated.
Why the history lesson?
That’s the last time Ohio’s two NFL
teams played with first place at stake
so late in a season.
The Bengals (5-2-1) are alone atop
the AFC North, with everyone else
right behind. The Browns (5-3) could
move into a first-place tie with Pittsburgh (6-3) and show they’re ready
to be taken seriously as a contender
Thursday night at Paul Brown Stadium.
A victory would give the Browns a
three-game winning streak, their best
start since 1994, and a lot of credibility
as an up-and-coming team.
“It’ll certainly be a good measuring
stick because Cincinnati this year has
been probably the best team in the
AFC North,” left tackle Joe Thomas
said. “If we want to win the AFC
North, we’re going to have to beat
Cincinnati, and this is our first opportunity.”
What about stage fright?
“If you’re at this point in your career,
you’ve played on multiple nationalstage games,” quarterback Brian
Hoyer said. “Guys have been in Super
Bowls, playoff games. This isn’t like
the high school team playing on the
weekly Friday night game on TV.”

The Bengals are trying to gain
respect, too. The defending division
champions have developed a reputation for playing well most of the time
but falling apart in the biggest games.
They’ve reached the playoffs each of
the last three seasons and gone 0-3 in
the postseason.
They had their first chance to make
an impression during a Sunday night
game in New England on Oct. 5 and
got drubbed 43-17.
They get a chance to make a second
impression Thursday night, this time
at home.
“You love to have that type of atmosphere, especially at here at home in
front of the whole nation,” defensive
tackle Domata Peko said. “It gives us
an opportunity to bounce back from
our slip-up we had against the Patriots.
It’s another prime-time game, and we’ll
be ready to go.”
Things to watch at Paul Brown Stadium on Thursday night:
STILL EMOTIONAL: Bengals
defensive tackle Devon Still will have
his 4-year-old daughter, Leah, watching him play for the first time. The girl
is fighting cancer, but was well enough
to fly from Philadelphia. The Bengals
raised money for pediatric cancer
research by donating money from his
jersey sales to Children’s Hospital in
Cincinnati. They’ll present a check for
more than $1 million on the field, with
Leah participating in an emotional
moment.
“The crowd will go crazy,” Still said.
“They’ve been supporting her this
whole time with her being all the way
in Philadelphia, and I know with her
being in Cincinnati and them having a
chance to see her, it’s going to get the

crowd kind of hyped up.”
BENGALS BAD AT NIGHT,
BROWNS BAD ON ROAD: Both
teams are working against their history in this one. The Bengals are
playing in prime time for the second
time this season. That lopsided loss in
New England left them 18-40 in prime
time. The Browns haven’t won an AFC
North game on the road since Sept.
28, 2008, dropping their last 17 away
from home against division rivals.
GREEN VS. HADEN: The game
reprises one of the best cornerback
vs. receiver matchups in the NFL,
Joe Haden against A.J. Green. The
receiver managed only nine catches
for 58 yards total in the two games
last season. Green missed three games
with an injured big right toe, but
returned last Sunday and caught three
passes for 44 yards and a touchdown
during a 33-23 win over Jacksonville.
The Bengals are hoping to increase his
time on the field Thursday.
LITTLE VS. BROWNS: Receiver
Greg Little tore into the Browns during the week for releasing him last May
after three inconsistent seasons. The
Bengals signed him to shore up their
depleted group of receivers, and he’s
caught four passes for 55 yards in three
games. Little is eager to have a big
game and show up his former team.
BROWNS ON THE RUN: Cleveland’s running game hasn’t gone
anywhere lately. In the past three, the
Browns have managed only 69, 39 and
50 yards while averaging 1.9 yards
per carry. The Bengals are known for
pressuring quarterbacks, so it’ll be up
to Cleveland’s running game to keep
them honest and keep Hoyer off the
ground.

The New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez takes batting practice
with the Eastern League’s Trenton Thunder before his rehab start
against the Reading Fightin Phils at Trenton Arm & Hammer Park
in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, on Friday, August 2, 2013.

Lawyer: A-Rod
admitted
his steroids use
MIAMI (AP) — A lawyer for the University of
Miami’s former pitching coach said Wednesday that
Alex Rodriguez admitted to federal investigators he
used steroids supplied by the owner of a now-closed
South Florida clinic.
Attorney Frank Quintero Jr., who represents Lazaro
“Laser” Collazo in his defense against charges of conspiracy to distribute performance-enhancing drugs,
told The Associated Press that the New York Yankees
third baseman confessed to steroids use, according
to Drug Enforcement Administration documents provided by the government to defense lawyers.
The Miami Herald first reported Rodriguez’s admission Wednesday, saying he met with DEA agents
on Jan. 29 at the agency’s South Florida field office.
Given a grant of immunity from prosecution, Rodriguez told investigators he did use banned substances
between late 2010 and October 2012 supplied by
Anthony Bosch, who owned the Biogenesis of America clinic in Coral Gables.
Rodriguez has publicly denied any use of banned
substances during his time with the Yankees, which
began in 2004.
The three-time AL MVP acknowledged in 2009 that
he using performance-enhancing drugs while with
Texas from 2001-03.
Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig suspended Rodriguez for 211 games in August 2013 for violations of
the sport’s drug agreement and labor contract, and
the penalty was cut to the 2014 season in January by
arbitrator Fredric Horowitz.
Rodriguez proclaimed his innocence and sued in
federal court, then withdrew the suit and accepted the
penalty.
The Herald reported Bosch told the DEA that
A-Rod agreed to pay for steroids for 20 Biogenesis
customers after the clinic closed to keep Bosch from
talking about his involvement. That could prompt
MLB to investigate whether Rodriguez could be suspended again under the sport’s drug agreement for
violations related to the sale and distribution of PEDs,
which are separate from the prohibitions on personal
use.
An attorney for Rodriguez did not immediately
respond to a telephone call seeking comment. The
Yankees declined comment.
