Southeast chapter of gun club hopes
to educate women on safety and usage
By Lindsay Kriz
lkriz@civitasmedia.com

MIDDLEPORT — Jessamy
Bright is a well-armed woman
— she currently carries a Sig
Sauer P238 — and she’s hoping to create other well-armed
women, too.
Bright, 35, recently founded
Meigs County’s Well Armed
Woman Southeast Ohio Chapter, with other chapters existing all over the country. The
chapter is an attempt to teach
women about gun safety and
usage in an area dominated by

men but is beginning to cater
to both men and women.
According to a 2011
Gallop poll, 47 percent of
American adults own a gun,
with 23 percent of women
personally owning a firearm.
Bright said that while opportunities are still opening up
to women, the demographic
is still predominantly
male. Well Armed Woman
is Bright’s way of helping
women learn about firearms
in a comfortable, feminine
environment, she said.

Accident involves multi-agency, multi-state response
By Beth Sergent

bsergent@civitasmedia.com

POINT PLEASANT — The
response to Tuesday’s accident
between a school bus and two
semi trucks was a result of preparing for the worst-case scenario.
According to reports, a school
bus was stopped to pick up children
around 7:30 a.m.Tuesday with
another semi-truck stopped behind
it near Cornstalk Road — the
location where the U.S. 35 goes
from four lane to two for 14 miles.
While this was happening, a second
semi-truck was unable to stop and
strucked the stopped semi-truck,
pushing it into the rear of the

school bus with children on it.
First responders, emergency
management, hospitals and law
enforcement all train and plan for
scenarios like the one that played
out on U.S. 35. The result was the
best possible outcome.
“This was a terrible situation
to respond to, but at the same
time, the outcome was the best it
could’ve been, too,” Jeremy Bryant, Point Pleasant fire chief, said.
A much more dire outcome
dominated much of the discussion
Tuesday as word began to spread
about the accident on one of
Mason County’s most dangerous
and notorious roads.
Karen Jones, operations chief

for Mason County EMS, said the
response went “amazingly well.”
Jones said EMS had eight trucks
on the scene with mutual aid from
Putnam County as well as Cabell
County, the latter of which was
assisting on another accident with
injuries on Jerry’s Run Road.
“We practice this, but today we
had to perform and we performed
the way we practiced. It was
great,” Jones said. “Every person
working EMS has to have MCI
(Mass Casualty Incident) training
before they can run on an ambulance. The scenarios we covered
are what we did (Tuesday).”

ATHENS — Not only
was Monday the first day
of school for Ohio University students, it also
marked the dedication
day for Ohio’s newest
facility: Walter Fieldhouse.
Hundreds of students,
alumni and donors, faculty and staff gathered
on the Fieldhouse’s fullsize indoor football field
to dedicate the 89,000

square-foot facility. Cutting the ribbon were lead
donors Robert D. and
Margaret “Peggy” M.

McDavis.
“This is a great day
for Ohio University,”
McDavis said. “We began
dreaming of this type of
facility, and how it would

ago. It is an honor to

many of the donors who
made it possible and
many of the students
who will put it to use.
I’m personally grateful
to all of the donors who
provided gifts to help us
build this magnificent
facility.”
All told, 475 donors
made gifts and pledges
totaling more than
$11.15 million. Alumni
donors are graduates
from across all 10 of

Ohio University’s academic colleges and
represent the classes of

parents, faculty and staff,
corporations and organizations and other Ohio
University friends also

THEIR VIEW

War fills
foreign
policy void
The United States is at war in Iraq again, and we
wish someone would tell us why. We’d like to know
why the humanitarian crisis that prompted this reengagement was more compelling, more urgent, than
other humanitarian crises that occur all over the world
all the time. We’d like to know why it’s up to U.S. forces,
not Iraqi forces, to stop the crazed militants who are
advancing on Iraq’s cities.
Most of all, we’d like to know what line in the sand
was crossed before the White House decided to act. Or
if there ever was a line in the sand.
If you haven’t been following this story, here’s a recap:
Members of an Islamic State group — variously called
ISIS or ISIL — encircled about 40,000 people, mostly
Yazidi women and children, a mile above sea level in
what may have been the final resting place of Noah’s
ark. The Yazidis, members of Iraq’s oldest minority,
feared being slaughtered, just as 500 had been brutally
slain the week before.
At one point, a Yazidi woman begged “the international community to ‘Save us! Save us!’ from ISIS,”
according to The Guardian.
The Islamic State barbarians have been causing
havoc for months in Iraq, which saw the last U.S. combat troops pull out in December 2011. But the grim possibility of 40,000 people being massacred on a mountaintop apparently was the final straw for the Obama
administration. The president decided we’d go back in.
The plan: Drop food, water and other supplies to the
Yazidis, start bombing to give them a path to safety,
and use Navy F-18 fighter jets and Predator drones to
halt the advance of the Sunni militants. U.S. intelligence
agencies also are directly arming the Kurds who are battling the militants, a departure from a previous policy of
working through Iraq’s central government in Baghdad.
The Baghdad government, meanwhile, is being
rocked by a power struggle.
And the U.S. government, having rejoined the fighting in Iraq, is being accused of doing either too little or
too much.
Those accusing the president of doing too little
are congressional hawks such as Sen. John McCain,
R-Ariz., and neoconservative (or “neocon”) deep thinkers, the folks who believe in using U.S. troops to extend
American-style government abroad, even where it’s not
welcome. They seem to have learned nothing from the
Iraq war, which ended after eight years with 4,488 U.S.
lives lost and little gained.
The hawks and neocons were gung-ho for the Iraq
war. For them, overseas adventurism is OK if a Republican president initiates it.
But they’re not the only hypocrites here. Liberals and
others inclined toward pacifism have seized upon the
stranded Yazidis to argue that America has a moral obligation to help people who are struggling. Thus, they justify the kind of military action they undoubtedly would
oppose if the reason were merely national security.
Stuck between these extremes is the Obama White
House, which proudly shut down the fruitless U.S. war
in Iraq 32 months ago. The administration’s idea of foreign policy coherence is — and we’re not making this
up — not doing stupid stuff. That’s what the president’s
aides have been saying. In April, Mr. Obama himself
said his foreign policy philosophy is to “avoid errors.”
Time will tell if reinserting U.S. military forces into
the ever-roiling landscape of the Middle East will
achieve what the president hopes — a rescue of panicked thousands, a retreat of ISIS militants — or will
turn out to be another error.
We can hope for the former. We can also hope that
someone, at some point, will advance a clearer understanding of U.S. foreign policy as a set of goals, ideals
and principles, not just a desire to avoid pratfalls, and
not just a yen for endless interventionism.

male and female minds are on

CENTENARY, Ohio — The
Lady Raiders weren’t going to
go away without a fight, but
the Blue Angels were up for a
scrap.
The Gallia Academy volleyball team defeated non-conference guest River Valley 25-22,
25-14 and 25-22 Monday night
in a Gallia County showdown.
The opening game went the
Blue Angels (3-1) way early,
opening up an 11-7 lead, but
the Lady Raiders (2-2) rallied
back to gain the 18-16 advantage. Five straight service

take the three-point win in the
opening game.
The second game was broken open early on with a sevenpoint swing in favor of the
Blue Angels. The Lady Raiders
allowed a six-point run late in
the game, and Gallia Academy
rolled to a 25-14 victory.
The Blue Angels again
gained an early edge in the
third game, pushing their lead
to nine points at 14-5. GAHS
sustained the advantage and
led 20-to-11 but the Lady Raiders didn’t give up, battling back

Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller is greeted by coach Urban Meyer after scoring in the first quarter against Clemson in the Discover
Orange Bowl at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014.

OSU’s Meyer: Miller surgery successful
COLUMBUS, Ohio
(AP) — Braxton Miller
came through surgery
just fine.
The Ohio State quarterback will still miss
the rest of the 2014
season after having
successful surgery on
Tuesday to repair the
torn labrum in his right
(throwing) shoulder.
“Braxton and I talked
this morning before
he went in,” Buckeyes
coach Urban Meyer said
on the Big Ten coaches
teleconference on Tuesday. “He had surgery.
Everything is good.”
Miller sent Meyer
pictures of himself, his
father and Dr. James
Andrews, who performed the operation on
Tuesday in Gulf Breeze,
Florida.

A day before his surgery, Miller posted the
following on his Twitter
account: “There are two
sides of everything. The
worst has happened.
The best is next ..”
Miller initially injured
his shoulder in last
year’s Orange Bowl loss
to Clemson, then had
surgery in February and
missed spring workouts.
He returned to the team
and reinjured the shoulder on Aug. 18 during
preseason camp.
Meyer said everything
went according to plan
during surgery.
“It’s very positive,” Meyer added.
“All reports are there
were no surprises
and everything went
well. He’s out of surgery and will be back

tomorrow morning.”
Miller is expected to
be sidelined for roughly
a year as he takes a
medical redshirt. He
has indicated he is on
schedule to graduate
from Ohio State in
December and plans to
return to the team to
play for his final season.
J.T. Barrett will start
in place of Miller for the
Buckeyes against Navy
in Baltimore on Saturday. The redshirt freshman has never taken a
snap in a college game
but Meyer likes how he
has assumed a leadership role since Miller
went down.
“We just started seeing this young man
develop,” he said of
Barrett. “We all thought
he would, we recruited

him. And he comes
from a really good high
school program and a
really incredible family.
All of those positives
are coming out right
now. I saw it before
(Miller’s) injury but you
really see it now.”
Miller was voted a
team captain by his
Ohio State teammates.
He will not make the
trip to the opener on
Saturday, but Meyer
said he would take an
active role in the team.
Cleveland Cavaliers
star LeBron James
offered best wishes to
Miller on his Twitter
account: “Excited and
Happy my lil bro braxtonmiller surgery went
great!”

Love struck: Kevin Love pledges commitment to Cavs
INDEPENDENCE,
Ohio (AP) — Kevin
Love’s phone rang in
July and LeBron James
asked the All-Star forward if he wanted to
play with him in Cleveland.
“I’m in,” Love said.
For the long haul.
Getting used to a new
city and new team after
being acquired by the
Cavaliers on Saturday,
Love said he’s committed to winning an NBA
title with the Cavaliers
— however long it takes.
Love can opt out of his
contract and become a
free agent next summer,
but the 25-year-old said
he intends to stay with
James and the Cavs.
“I’m committed to this
team, committed long
term to the end goal and
that’s to win championships,” he said.
Love was introduced
Tuesday by the Cavs,
who acquired him in a

blockbuster, three-team
trade that instantly
turned Cleveland into
an NBA championship
favorite. The deal also
gives the team a starpowered trio in Love,
James and Kyrie Irving.
Love never made the
playoffs during his six
seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves,
who will now rebuild
with No. 1 overall pick
Andrew Wiggins and
last year’s top pick,
Anthony Bennett, two
young players they were
able to pry from Cleveland.
The Cavs know nothing is certain, and
there’s risk in bringing
aboard Love. But with
James, Love, Irving,
guard Dion Waiters,
relentless rebounder
Anderson Varejao and
newly signed veterans
Shawn Marion, Mike
Miller and James Jones,
the Cavs have the mak-

each posted three aces, Martin marked
two, followed by Pasquale and McGhee
with one apiece.
Alex Truance led River Valley’s
service attack with seven points, followed by Jacey Walter and Leia Moore
with five points each. Courtney Smith
marked four service points, Rachael
Smith and Angel Toler both finished
with two, while Chelsea Copley capped
off the scoring with one marker. Courtney Smith marked three aces in the
setback.
The Blue Angels’ net attack was led
by Martin with eight kills, Walker with
seven and Curfman with six. Meadows
marked five kills, followed by Caldwell
and Makenzie Brumfield with one each.
Walker posted six blocks to lead the
defense at the net, while Caldwell and
Martin each had two blocks, and Curfman finished with one.

team total. VCHS is still
the league leader at 11-1.

Cliff Chapman rounded

competed for RVHS but
they did not contribute to
the team total. The Silver
and Black are currently
third in the TVC Ohio
with a 9-3 mark.
Wellston was led by
Dakota Martin with a 49,
followed by Len Lemaster
and Josh Lang, who each

team — this season and
for many more to come.
“This is culmination
of a year and a half of
conversations to trade for
Kevin,” general manager
David Griffin said. “This
is a player that, quite
frankly, fits us as well as
any player could have.”
Love will wear No. 0 for
the Cavs. His No. 42, the
number he wore in college
and with the Timerbwolves, was worn by Nate
Thurmond and retired in
Cleveland. He considered
No. 11, his Olympic number, but that was worn by
Zydrunas Ilgauskas and
also hangs from the rafters
at Quicken Loans Arena.
So he went with 0, the
number he first wore as a
kid in Beaverton, Oregon.
“I thought this was a
chance to start fresh,”
Love said, “and pick a
new number that would

seven. Martin and Meadows each had
six digs for the GAHS defense, Curfman chipped in with five, followed by
Caldwell and Kathleen Allen with four
each. Pasquale marked two digs and
Walker contributed one in the win.
Moore and Rachael Smith paced the
RVHS net attack with four kills each,
followed by Courtney Smith with two.
Truance and Walter each added a kill,
while Courtney Smith had a team-high
five assists and Copley added three
helpers. Rachael Smith led the defense
with three blocks, Courtney Smith
added two digs, while Truance finished
with a block and a dig.
Gallia Academy and River Valley
will meet again on September 24, in
Bidwell. The Blue Angels return to
action on September 4 when they host
Logan in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic
League tilt, while the Lady Raiders
return to the court on Thursday when
the Silver, Black and Pink host Athens
in a Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division matchup.

Dylan Sheaffar gave WHS
the edge over Athens
with a 53. Seth Colter
(56) also golfed for the
Blue and Gold but did
not effect the team score.
Wellston is fifth in the
league standings at 4-8.
Athens was led by Zach
Howman with a 48 and
Jordan Dean with a 49,
while Ryan McCarthy
marked a 50 and Zach
Shriver posted a 54. Chris
Cam (57) and Elijah
McClain (66) also played
for the Bulldogs, but they
didn’t count toward the
team total. Athens is now
fourth in TVC Ohio with
a 5-7 record.

The Buckeyes were led
by Chase Koker with a 51
and Steven Bishop with
a 54, while Ben Johnson and Tanner Smith
each marked 59. Casey
Davis (64) and Hannah
Johnson (67) also played
for NYHS but didn’t
effect the team total.
The Orange and Brown
are currently last in the
league at 1-11.
Alexander was led by
Kyle Holt with a 52 and
Dallas Sweeney with a 53.
Casey McDonald posted
a 59 and Dalton Cooper
marked a 60 for the Spartans. AHS is sixth in the
league at 2-10.
The Raiders will host
the next TVC Ohio meet
on Thursday at Cliffside.
