Three arrested in Meigs Co. meth bust
Staff Report
TDSnews@civitasmedia.com

MIDDLEPORT —
The Meigs County
Sheriff’s Department
discovered a meth lab
and arrested three
individuals Saturday
evening, according to a
news release from Meigs
County Sheriff Keith
Wood.
Tony Chapell, 51;
Stephanie Lyons, 33;
and Michael Napper, 31,
were arrested Saturday
evening.
The incident occurred
at 2885 State Route 7,

near Middleport. Officers responded to a call
at the home of Tony
Chapell, according to
information provided to
the department that a
suspect wanted for questioning by deputies for
breaking and entering
had been dropped off at
the Chapell residence.
After deputies arrived
at the Chapell residence
and attempted to locate
the breaking and entering suspect, they discovered the suspected
cultivation of marijuana.
Because deputies could

not receive a response
from the residence, they
determined there was
probable cause to request
a search warrant.
A warrant was issued
to the Gallia-Meigs Drug
Task Force, and the
sheriff, two deputies and
the Middleport Police
Department executed
the search warrant,
leading them to the
discovery of two males
and one female inside
the home. One suspect
told deputies that an
active meth lab was in
the room. After everyone

was removed for safety,
technicians discovered a
one-pot method of cooking meth, which included
two gas generators with
tubing.
The suspects have
been charged with manufacturing of methamphetamine, drug possession
and the illegal assembly
of chemicals. Napper is
also wanted in Vinton
County for the same
charges, and is currently
facing charges in Meigs
County for endangering
children and possession
of drugs from 2013 case.

He was recently indicted
in Meigs County on
another meth-related
charge.
The suspects are currently at Meigs County
and Middleport holding facilities until they

appear before a judge
next week to answer
charges.
The original suspect
wanted for questioning
by deputies for breaking
and entering was not at
the residence.

It was a very wet day, but that didn’t stop a dedicated group
from participating in the inaugural Claflin C.A.R.E. Bike Ride
recently in New Haven. A total of 29 riders raised over $1,000
to go to the Bend Area C.A.R.E.’s “Kids for Christmas” program,
which provides gifts and treats to needy children during the
holiday. Pictured are a few of the participants.

NEW HAVEN — Rain did not stop a group
of dedicated riders when the inaugural Claflin
C.A.R.E. Bike Ride was held recently in New
Haven.
A total of 29 riders of all ages completed 109
laps around the 8.5-mile course, an average of 32
miles per rider.
Hosted by the Bend Area C.A.R.E. organization, more than $1,000 was raised from the ride,
which will go to the group’s “Kids for Christmas”
program.
The program provides gifts and treats for underprivileged children during the holiday.
Unlike a bicycle race, the riding format was
multiple laps around a designated loop, according
to Jodie Roush, organizer of the ride. There were
turn-around points at various locations, enabling
entire families to join in on the event.
Even though there were no winners, several
people were recognized for their efforts. Nathan
Damm and Jared Nutter each rode eight laps,
making them the male riders completing the most
laps. The female riders completing the most laps
were Michelle Blaine, Kylie Oliver, Andrea Roush
and Leah Smith, each with four.
Wyatt Edwards also completed four laps, the
most by any rider 16 years and under. The team
completing the most laps was Velo Gallia, with 44.

Bumper crop of corn drives down prices
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Ohio’s
bumper crop of corn this year
could help cut meat prices over
the next few years.
The high corn yields from this
year and last year are forcing a drop
in prices not seen in the past five
years. That’s not so good for farmers, but consumers should benefit.
Per-bushel corn prices have
dropped 38 percent since last
July, John Miyares, a statistician
with the National Agricultural
Statistics Service’s Great Lakes
Regional Field Office, told The
Dayton Daily News (http://bit.
ly/1nN5pZm ).

The $4.37-per-bushel price last
week was the lowest in five years.
Miyares says prices of other crops
have fallen sharply as well, with
soybeans trading at near 2½-year
lows and wheat at near four-year
lows.
“(Corn) prices were artificially
high in the past few years,” said
Jeff Wuebkur, who farms corn,
soybeans, and livestock in Darke
County, northwest of Dayton.
“Crops were good last year, and
this year they’re just as good.
There’s more corn and more beans
than ever.”
Nationally, corn has the poten-

tial to reach 2003’s record of
nearly 14 billion bushels, the U.S.
Department of Agriculture said in
its midyear report.
High corn prices the past few
years have meant high meat prices
in grocery stores since 2012. The
sudden decline in corn prices may
create a price drop for meat prices
in the next two years, according
to Sam Custer, an Ohio State
University extension outreach
coordinator.
Low corn prices will affect other
commodities, including farmland,
with prices expected to drop,
Custer said.

Tornado rips off roofs, downs trees
REVERE, Mass. (AP)
— A storm system that
wreaked havoc across
the eastern half of the
U.S. spawned a tornado
just north of Boston on
Monday, ripping roofs off
homes, uprooting dozens
of large trees and forcing
businesses to close.
The tornado — a rarity in Massachusetts and
virtually unheard of in the
Boston area — touched
down in Revere, a coastal
city of nearly 52,000. City
officials said there were
no immediate reports
of serious injuries, but
several people suffered
minor injuries, including
a baby who was in a car
and hurt by flying glass
and an elderly woman
who suffered cuts.
“Given the magnitude of
the storm, it’s really a miracle that no one sustained
more serious injuries,”
said Mayor Dan Rizzo.

Gov. Deval Patrick said
state emergency officials
were on the scene and
would “do whatever we
can to help them stand up
again.”
The tornado was
spawned by a powerful storm that moved
through the Boston
area shortly after 9 a.m.
Revere residents said it
touched down around 10
a.m. and lasted about five
minutes.
The National Weather
Service’s office in Massachusetts said it was the
first tornado in Suffolk
County, which includes
Boston and the northern
communities of Revere,
Chelsea and Winthrop,
since the agency began
keeping records on them
in 1950. Massachusetts
has had 162 confirmed
tornadoes during that
time, the majority of them
weak, according to meteo-

rologist Kim Buttrick.
Revere officials were
assessing the extent of
the damage early Monday afternoon and going
door-to-door in neighborhoods around the city’s
busy commercial thoroughfare of Broadway,
which appeared to have
sustained the brunt of the
damage. Officials were
advising many residents
not to return to their
homes until they could
confirm there were no gas
leaks.
Rizzo said he expected
the city to open a shelter for
residents who needed one.
Paul and Patty Carrabes said they were both at
work when the wind tore
the roof off their Revere
Beach Parkway home.
“I probably would have
died if I was in there,”
said Patty Carrabes said.
About a block over,
Luis Fonseca said emer-

gency warnings came too
late. By the time a tornado warning popped up
on his cellphone, he was
already running to the
basement with his niece
and nephew as windows
shattered and the wooden
house swayed from side
to side.
Other residents said
they received the warnings roughly 10 minutes
before the tornado hit,
giving them enough time
to find shelter.
Communities across
the U.S. were cleaning
up Monday after strong
storms destroyed homes,
knocked out power for
thousands of people and
toppled power lines and
trees.
In eastern Tennessee,
officials said there were
no reports of any deaths
or injuries from Sunday’s
storms, though at least 10
homes were destroyed.

Marshall faculty member receives NASA research award
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.
— Dr. Kumika Toma of
the Marshall University
College of Health Professions has received a
research award to study
sex and age differences in
skeletal muscle responses
to weakness and recovery.
As part of a NASAfunded project in space
biology and medicine,
Toma’s study is aimed
at better understanding
how microgravity will
impact crew members on
extended missions.
Toma, program director for the undergraduate
exercise science program
in the college’s School
of Kinesiology, said the
study will use rats to
examine the long-term
exposure to microgravity.
“Seemingly, there are
sex and age differences
among the degree of
muscle weakness and
also the degree of recov-

ery,” Toma said. “This
study uses rats whose
hind limbs will be suspended for a week so
that they don’t use hind
limbs. After one week
of hind limb suspension,
they will be back to their
normal activity (recovery). Since the diameter
of skeletal muscle is
correlated to the muscle
strength, I’ll be able to
see the muscle size differences among sex and age.
If there are differences,
then, we can develop ageand sex-specific tactics to
minimize loss and maximize recovery.”
Toma said decreased

A kicker with
Kickstarter
Meet Zack “Danger” Brown. He’s shot to Internet
fame for successfully funding a Kickstarter campaign nobody had previously imagined.
His goal? Making potato salad.
That’s it. His innovative, ambitious plan so tickled
the fancy of America’s crowdfunders that he raised
tens of thousands of dollars to whip up the dish.
There’s just one catch: taxes.
Yes, crowdfunding is income, just like a paycheck.
And income means government gets involved. In Mr.
Brown’s case, that has meant a tax bill in the tens
of thousands of dollars, according to some calculations. In an analysis for the Tax Foundation, Scott
Eastman determined that Mr. Brown’s tax bill would
top $21,000 if all his pledgers come through with the
cash.
Kickstarter collections can dwindle when some
backers flake out, so Mr. Brown’s final bill is likely
to be lower than that. But it’s still dramatically higher than many would expect, or believe fair.
That’s because common sense tells us that Mr.
Brown didn’t rake in all that money because he’s
working for those who pay him. In fact, we intuit that
he really wasn’t paid for what legal scholars and attorneys term “good and valuable consideration.” Yes,
Mr. Brown did promise to reward his backers with
amusing prizes triggered by how much money they
pledged. (Send him a dollar, for instance, and he’d
say your name aloud while preparing the side dish.)
But is this kind of transaction akin in any way to one
that produces taxable income?
Some analysts say no. As tax attorney Kelly Phillips Erb explains at Forbes, Mr. Brown isn’t a charity, but he is, in all likelihood, the recipient of funds
the tax code would recognize as mere gifts. Ms. Erb
suggests she’d argue that the gratuitous intent of
Brown’s backers, coupled with the low value of their
contributions, signals an expectation not to be better off in any tangible sense for having funded the
potato salad. Many likely don’t believe they’ll really
receive their rewards. Instead, they simply wish to
partake in the intangible pleasures of a rather silly,
but life-affirming, Internet game.
Shouldn’t that kind of activity be shielded from
the full force of federal taxation?
Unfortunately, Mr. Brown is in a gray area.
Crowdfunding has laid bare the reality of how informal, fleeting and nontraditional economic relationships can be in our everyday lives. The fabric of a
robust economy can’t be cut up neatly into the kinds
of squares that fit IRS regulatory patterns.
That doesn’t mean Mr. Brown should gleefully
evade his taxes. It does mean that tax reform in the
direction of a simpler, more recognizably human
system will be of more benefit to Americans.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Do you have
American Indian
ancestry? Probably not
Dear Editor
In a recent obituary in your paper, yet
another person claims
American Indian ancestry. Even better, the percentage of Indian blood
was given as 11.
No one can be 11 of
anything. A person who
has a great-grandparent
as American Indian
would be 12 1/2 percent
Indian while a person
with a great-greatgrandparent would be
6 1/4 percent American
Indian. There is NO 11
percent Indian possible.
Secondly, I am bombarded with people
claiming Indian relationship. However,
one or two have ever
shown any possibility
of this. In Meigs County, the overwhelming
claim is being part
Cherokee. If a person
has ancestry in Tennessee or North Carolina,
Indian ancestry might
be possible. But Meigs
County had no Anerican Indians after 1800
— and then the only
tribe here was Shawnee. The last Indians
seen in the county was
in 1815 when three
Shawnees returned to
Rutland to view their
old hunting grounds.

There is sometimes
a mixture of Indian
in the earlier African
American population of
Ohio. After the Treaty
of Greenville in 1795,
all American Indians
were forced out of Ohio,
although it didn’t happen immediately.
Also, before the
20th century, it was
considered totally unacceptable to marry an
American Indian. Of
course, there were rare
occurrences of it.
Remember that family legends are often
just that — legends.
I have found serious
errors in the “facts” that
were presented to me
on generations as recent
as my grandparents. I
have found very educated people claiming
Indian ancestry because
“Grandma smoked a
pipe or wore a shawl or
had a high cheek bone.”
Those were all quite
common and prove
nothing about ancestry.
Really research your
family before you make
claims. There are certainly wonderful things about
American Indian culture
and its people, but claiming Indian ancestry and
proving it are two very
different things.

THEIR VIEW

Voters hold key to peace in Middle East

By Dr. Tom Hastings

More than any other time in
the history of the conflict over the
tiny ancient land we call Israel
and Palestine, voters from a land
across the sea hold unused power
to change the basic course and
outcomes of that conflict.
At this time, those voters —
who are also largely taxpayers
— are keeping the conflict hotter
and more bloody by their failure to
prioritize the issue.
Polls are interesting to politicians. As of July 18-20, according
to a CNN poll, a 57-34 percent
majority of Americans side with
Israel in the current conflict, calling Israel’s violent efforts to root
out and destroy Hamas’s capacity
to attack Israel “justified.”
Four days later, Israel knowingly bombed one of the very rare
sanctuaries from its missiles, a
UN school in Gaza packed with
women and children. The UN had
been entirely forthcoming with
precise coordinates of the location
of the school in an effort to be
sure that the highly sophisticated,
precision guided Israeli Defense
Force missiles would never hit the
school. Instead, the IDF apparently programmed those specific
coordinates into multiple missiles
and struck the UN school in the
lowest blow so far. The IDF has
also cravenly bombed several hospitals in Gaza, with tired claims
about Hamas storing weapons
“nearby.”
When Hamas and other terrorist
organizations were sending suicide
bombers into Israeli pizza parlors
or onto Israel’s campuses to inflict
intentional damage to young
Israeli civilians, the world, includ-

ing American citizens, reacted
with general horror and disgust,
and rightly so. This level of incorrigibly blind hatred is clearly absolutely morally bankrupt.
Satire service The Onion has
captured the sick symmetry the
best. Hamas fires impotent rockets insanely straight into Israel’s
missile-destroying Iron Dome, stupidly targeting civilians and giving
Israel a military justification for
attacking Hamas, but nothing can
give anyone any excuse for what
Israel has done to hospitals and
the UN school shelter. Nothing.
So Israel has officially joined this
bloody dive into the moral cesspool, and American voters hold a
huge piece of the responsibility for
this, supplying the IDF with much
of its war materiel and a massive
amount of general military aid
every year, $121 billion to date,
according to the U.S. Congressional Research Service report of
April 2014. No other country gets
this much and no other country
ever gets the “no strings attached”
beneficence awarded and afforded
Israel, even including huge outlays
of my money and yours to give
straight to Israel’s war profiteering
corporations to use as they see fit.
This means Israel is funded to
do military research that even puts
it ahead of U.S. war profiteering
corporations and the U.S. military
in some respects. Wow. And there
are no human rights expectations
on that money, nor is it required
that Israel follow internationally
accepted rules of engagement,
laws of war, or laws prohibiting
crimes against humanity.
Seriously. It is time to help
Israel decide to negotiate with
all its adversaries in good faith,

something it has failed to do again
and again. Stop all aid from you
to them, from the U.S. treasury to
the Israeli government, from the
Pentagon and State Department to
the IDF.
Obviously, Israel has stockpiled
enough weapons and ordnance
to wreak hellfire for a long time,
but they expect and clearly
assume arrogant entitlement to
this unique and grotesquely large
condition-free military support,
which enables their increasingly
rotten, inhumane conduct. They
commit war crimes and know that
it doesn’t matter because their
tsunami of war arsenals, supplies
and huge amounts of unrestricted
funds is never going to stop.
Let’s help Israel. Stop all aid.
They would become much better
neighbors and world citizens if we
could muster that domestic political will to require it of our elected
officials. Start with our U.S. senators, who passed a unanimous resolution supporting Israel’s bombing of Gaza, Senate Resolution
498, as soon as Israel attacked. No
U.S. senator voted against this,
remarkably and shamefully, and
Rand Paul even called for further
U.S. action to cease the relatively
small amount of U.S. aid to the
Palestinian Authority until they
kicked Hamas out of the unity government.
Perhaps Paul has a small point,
but the larger point, by far, is to
end all U.S. aid to the IDF. That
is the single biggest step toward
peace anyone could take right now
and if you are an American voter,
you have a say-so in this.
Let’s start saying so.

Gordon’s drive-for-five dream becomes reality

AP Photo | R Brent Smith

Jeff Gordon celebrates after winning the NASCAR Brickyard 400 auto race at
Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Sunday, July 27. At left is team
owner Rick Hendrick. At right are Gordon’s wife, Ingrid Vandebosch, and their
children, Ella Sofia and Leo Benjamin.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A
historical moment in NASCAR
history came on a day when
the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway may
have needed it most. While
the stands weren’t full — far
from it — those in attendance
witnessed Jeff Gordon complete his drive-for-five Brickyard victories in grand style.
Twenty years ago, Gordon won
the inaugural Brickyard 400
and followed it up with winss
in 1998, 2001, ‘04, and now in
‘14.
By doing so, Gordon injected
a historical moment to an
event that certainly needed the
boost, while also rewarding
an Indiana fan base that has
supported him since he drove
USAC cars while living in
Pittsboro.

“I don’t think there’s a greater feeling as a racecar driver,
and a race team,” Gordon said.
“I cannot believe this just happened. I was trying so hard
with 10 to go to not focus on
the crowd, I was trying not to
let it get to me. You can’t help
it. It’s such a big race, such an
important victory.
“This one is for all those fans
throughout the years and all
weekend long who said, ‘go get
No. 5.’”
Historically and statistically,
Gordon had a heck of a day.
Gordon, who collected his
90th NASCAR victory with the
win, tied Formula One driver
Michael Schumacher for the
most wins by any driver at
Indianapolis. He currently sits
third in all-time NASCAR wins
behind Richard Petty (200)

and David Pearson (105).
With the victory, Gordon
passes teammate Jimmie Johnson (four wins) as the all-time
NASCAR race winner at IMS.
Gordon became the first
driver in IMS history to lead
500 laps and his total now sits
at 528. He has led at least one
lap at 14 different Brickyard
400s, extending his previous
mark.
“I told him this morning,
this is your day,” said Rick
Hendrick, owner of Gordon’s
No. 24 Chevrolet and Hendrick
Motorsports. “We’re a bit older
than we were 20 years ago, but
it’s a great win.”
With the win, the Sprint Cup
Series points-leader will also
be looking for another driveSee GORDON | 10

Fitzgerald: Union
push unified
Northwestern
CHICAGO (AP) —
No matter how this season unfolds, Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald insisted there is no
more unified team than
his Wildcats.
For that, he credits
the push for them to
unionize.
Fitzgerald said he’s
“proud of the maturity”
his players displayed
the past few months.
As the Big Ten
opened its annual twoday media event on
Monday, some big story
lines hung over the college landscape.
A four-team playoff
system to determine a
national champion is
being implemented and
the conference would
love to be represented
in it. Ohio State, for
one, hopes to be in
the picture after going
24-2 overall and 16-0 in
regular-season conference play in its first
two years under coach
Urban Meyer. So does
Michigan State after
beating the Buckeyes in
the conference championship game and winning the Rose Bowl.
There’s the push by
the five power conferences — the Big
Ten, ACC, SEC, Big
12 and Pac-12 — for
autonomy to make their
own NCAA rules. The
NCAA’s board of directors will vote Aug. 7,
and commissioner Jim
Delany expects it to
pass.
There are two new
members in the Big
Ten, with Rutgers and
Maryland joining the
conference.
And, of course,
there’s the union movement. At the center of
it is Northwestern, with
former quarterback
Kain Colter leading the
push to form the first
one for college athletes.
“As I look back and
reflect upon the experiences that our young
men went through
and our entire football
program went through,
that’s what jumps out to
me is their maturity,”
Fitzgerald said. “As
we visited throughout
the whole offseason,
I believe there’s no
more unified football
program in the country.
We’ve been through
more since probably

January than most, and
it’s been nothing but a
positive and nothing
more than unifying in
our locker room and
throughout our entire
football program. So
I think we’re a leg up
from that standpoint.
“And as I look at
where we go in the
future, hopefully that
will just be something
that we can draw
upon.”
Fitzgerald said he
has talked to Colter
“a handful of times,
especially at graduation” in recent months.
Asked if they discussed
the union movement,
Fitzgerald laughed and
said, “No.”
A regional director of the National
Labor Relations Board
ruled in March that
Northwestern’s full
scholarship players can
bargain with the school
as employees, sending
shockwaves through
the sports landscape.
It’s not clear if the
Wildcats support unionization. They voted in
April on whether to
form the first union for
college athletes, but
the result is not known
because the NLRB
impounded the ballots
pending an appeal by
the university and a
possible court fight.
The school urged the
NLRB to overturn
the ruling this month,
holding up the football
program as exemplifying the university’s
integration of athletics
and academics.
Either way, this was
seen by many as a step
toward the end of the
traditional “studentathlete era.” If unionization is inevitable at
another school even if
it fails at Northwestern,
well, Delany isn’t sure
it is.
“Whether or not it’s
got legs in other places
around the country
— it’s hard to predict
or project,” he said. “I
would say even at the
outset for the most
part, these matters of
labor are really stateby-state especially for
public institutions.”
Even so, it’s at least
being discussed elsewhere. Ohio State

In this Oct. 25, 2013 file photo, Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling gestures as the Clippers play the Sacramento Kings during
the first half of an NBA basketball game in Los Angeles.

Judge OKs record-setting $2B sale
LOS ANGELES
(AP) — A judge ruled
against Los Angeles
Clippers owner Donald
Sterling on Monday in
his attempt to block the
$2 billion sale of the
Los Angeles Clippers to
former Microsoft CEO
Steve Ballmer.
In the ruling, Superior
Court Judge Michael
Levanas sided with
Sterling’s estranged wife
Shelly Sterling, who
burst into tears when the
ruling was announced.
“I can’t believe it’s
over. I feel good,” she
said.
Shelly Sterling negotiated the sale of the team
after the 80-year-old
billionaire was banned
by the NBA for making
offensive remarks about
blacks.
She sought approval

from a probate judge
for the deal she struck
after removing her husband from the trust that
owned the team when
doctors found he had
signs of Alzheimer’s disease and couldn’t manage
his affairs.
Donald Sterling
claimed his wife deceived
him about the medical
exams.
He later revoked the
trust after she negotiated
the record-setting sales
price and his lawyers
argued that the move
killed the deal. They said
the case didn’t belong in
probate court because the
trust had been dissolved.
The ruling in Los
Angeles County Superior
Court is unlikely to put
an end to the bizarre
saga that began in April
when a recording sur-

faced of Sterling scolding his young girlfriend
for bringing black men
to Clippers games. The
NBA moved quickly to
ban Sterling for life and
fined him $2.5 million.
Sterling was apologetic
after the audio recording
went viral, but his mea
culpa backfired when he
criticized Lakers great
Magic Johnson, who had
been photographed with
Sterling’s girlfriend, as a
bad role model for kids
because he had HIV. Sterling was roundly criticized from locker rooms
to the Oval Office, where
President Barack Obama
called Sterling’s remarks
“incredibly offensive racist statements.”
With the NBA threatening to seize the team
and auction it, Sterling
initially gave his wife of

58 years permission to
negotiate a sale but then
refused to sign it. He
said he would sue the
league instead and then
revoked the trust.
The nonjury trial
held over several weeks
focused mainly on
whether Shelly Sterling
properly removed her
husband as a trustee and
whether her actions carried any weight after he
revoked the trust.
Donald Sterling’s lawyers contended that his
wife and her lawyers conspired to trick him and
that the mental exams by
two doctors were faulty.
They said Sterling didn’t
know his competency as
a trustee was being evaluated and that he showed
no signs of incompetence
on the witness stand.

Gordon eyeing 5th title after big Brickyard win
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) —
Long before Jimmie Johnson
arrived on the NASCAR scene,
Jeff Gordon was the fastest
thing on wheels.
He was the “Wonder Boy”
who racked up wins at a record
place. He brought the southern
sport to Madison Ave. and
became such a household name
that even rapper Nelly namedropped Gordon in a song.
Gordon won all the big races,
collected four championships
in seven years and had 58 victories before his 30th birthday.
Then his pace began to slow,
the rest of the field caught up
to him and Johnson moved into
the Hendrick Motorsports shop
as the new kid on the block.
Gordon hasn’t won a title since,
while Johnson has won five.
Now, 13 years after Gordon
launched “The Drive for 5,”
Gordon is on track to collect
that elusive fifth title.
The Sprint Cup points leader
won Sunday’s Brickyard 400, a
race that often gives a preview
of the championship. Nine

times in 21 years, the winner at
Indianapolis Motor Speedway
went on to hoist the Cup at the
end of the year.
“If you can do it here, you
can do it anywhere,” Gordon
said after his NASCAR-record
fifth win at Indy.
Gordon, a week shy of his
43rd birthday and often fighting an aching back, won on the
20th anniversary celebration
of his first Brickyard victory.
It came on the day the Mayor
of Indianapolis proclaimed
“Jeff Gordon Day” and showed
Gordon is trying to make 2014
his year.
Although he talked in January
of retirement considerations,
Gordon is reinvigorated and
deeply committed to winning a
title with his No. 24 team.
“You feel like you’ve kind
of won all that you could win,
you’ve won four championships,
then a guy like Jimmie Johnson
comes along and starts dominating, you kind of lose the
motivation,” Gordon said.
But he is inspired by the

work ethic and dedication of
crew chief Alan Gustafson,
and fears being “the weak link”
of the race team. He also is
motivated to share his success
with wife, Ingrid, and their
two young children. Gordon
married Ingrid in 2006 and the
couple quickly added a boy and
a girl to the family.
“It’s pushed me to give more,
do more, work harder,” he said.
“Ingrid has never experienced a
championship. I told her ‘Hey,
I know you want to know what
it’s like to win a championship.
Well, there’s a big commitment
that it takes.’ She’s like ‘Whatever it takes.’
“That’s the kind of year that
we’re having. We’re just putting
everything we possibly can into
it.”
It’s going take everything
Gordon has to win this Chase
for the Sprint Cup championship, the first under a winnertake-all, elimination round
format.
A model of consistency all
season long with 14 top-10

finishes in 20 races, the slate
will be wiped clean come
September. Gordon will have
to be aggressive and out front
to make it through the three
elimination rounds. If he is one
of the four drivers to advance
all the way to the Homestead
finale, the title will go to the
best driver in the fastest car on
one day only.
That could be Gordon, if he
drives anything like he did at
Indy.
Although he’s struggled with
restarts for several years, and
did most of Sunday, he finally
nailed one when he needed it
most.
A late caution gave him one
shot at taking the lead away
from teammate Kasey Kahne,
and he figured a perfect strategy as they headed toward the
green flag. Kahne had given
Gordon the outside lane, and
he knew if he was alongside
Kahne in the corner, he’d be
able to hold him down and
loosen Kahne’s car.
“I treated him like a competi-

tor at that point, he might not
have liked it,” Gordon said.
“When it comes down to the
end of a race, we’re here to
win.”
The victory was the 90th
of Gordon’s career, and he’s
just the third driver to hit that
mark. Although it was once
believed he might chase Richard Petty’s record of 200 wins,
David Pearson’s 105 is suddenly in reach depending on
how long Gordon wants to stay
in his Chevrolet.
Pearson’s total is a long way
away for Gordon, but the championship is suddenly very near.
His win in May at Kansas was
motivating for driver and crew,
but the win at Indy on Sunday
convinced them all the title is a
very real possibility.
“It’s certainly a huge confidence boost for this team. We
recognize the significance of
this,” he said. “I don’t know if
we believed we were capable
of winning this championship
this year, truly believed it. We
do now.”

NASCAR drivers want changes on the schedule
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) drastic will be done to
— NASCAR Chairman
next year’s schedule.
Brian France says nothing
That’s unfortunate for

drivers who are ready for
big changes.
They would love to

blow up the schedule,
from moving dates, slicing the number of races,

or just adding more time
off.
Six-time champion Jimmie Johnson wanted an
off week before the final
10 races in the Chase for
the Sprint Cup championship.
“I buy into the philosophy that we have a bit of
oversaturation with race
distances and how often
we compete,” Johnson
said Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “I
think we could trim that
stuff down. I don’t know
where I would go to first,
but I think adopting a
little bit of ‘less is more’
would be beneficial.”
Ryan Newman, the
2013 Brickyard 400 winner, said NASCAR should
hold Wednesday night
races in the fall to showcase the sport and move
away from a clogged NFL
weekend.
“We can still run 36
or 38 races, but we
don’t need to be at the
racetrack, especially for
Daytona and Talladega
for three, sometimes four
days with the inspection
process,” he said.
France had said there
would be “robust discussion” about the schedule
at Daytona International
Speedway in a midseason
state of the sport question and answer session.
But he downplayed his
earlier remarks this week
in an interview on Siri-

usXM NASCAR.
“There’s not going to
be a dramatic change, but
there may be some things
that are a little different
— that’s not unusual,”
he said. “You come back
to moving dates around
… we don’t do a lot of
it, but we do a little of
it from time to time and
this will be one of those
moments.”
France said the schedule will be released in
September.
Of course, none of
those suggestions is likely
to be implemented. NASCAR chief communications officer Brett Jewkes
tweeted on Friday, “Armchair schedule-makers
at full froth this week.
Amazing how simple,
quick and easy it sounds.
(hash)ItsNot.”
How’s this for drastic?
Kurt Busch advocated
putting the site of the
final, championship race
of the season up for bid.
Track would bid for the
finale just like teams and
cities do for the Super
Bowl or countries for the
Olympics.
He also wanted to mix
the Chase schedule by
taking Talladega out of
the equation and making it as the Chase cutoff
race. He’d swap it with
the Richmond date.
”It works because NASCAR owns both those
tracks,” he said.

Sterling, a lawyer who

made a fortune as a landlord, has filed an antitrust
lawsuit in federal court
against the NBA and he
sued his wife, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver
and the league in state
court.
Lawyers for Shelly
Sterling and Ballmer had
urged the judge to let the
sale go through because
it was in the best interest
of the family trust. They
said an auction was less
likely to bring such a high
price and that coach Doc
Rivers, key players and
sponsors were likely to
walk if Donald Sterling’s
ownership was prolonged.
“The trust has a golden

Sterling’s lawyers wrote
in court papers. “A sale of
the Clippers for $2 billion
is indisputably a bonanza
for the Sterling family.
Donald’s strident opposition is motivated by only
selfish considerations.”
Donald Sterling said
he could get more for the

Our programs are the best of the best!

Our Summer Stimulus program is the best of the best. It has all the components that a
great revenue manager and leader loves! We combine great products and discounts for
our customers, along with competition among the Civitas team, the opportunity to
earn additional $$$ and the fabulous Summit of Success annual trip. You couldn’t ask
for more!
At the summit of success annual trip we felt like royalty, giving us the
opportunity to meet and get to know fellow members of other sales teams,
managers, revenue leaders and even CEO Michael Bush!! The enthusiasm and
