Cause of fire undetermined

By Sarah Hawley

shawley@aimmediamidwest.com

POMEROY — The
cause of the large fire
which destroyed a commercial building in
Pomeroy last weekend is
“undetermined”, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
“The cause of the
fire is going to be ruled
undetermined due to the
severity of the damage,”
stated Fire Marshal’s
Office Public Information
Officer Brian Bohnert in
an email on Monday.
As previously reported,
firefighters from Pomeroy, Rutland, Middleport,
Syracuse and Mason volunteer fire departments
were called to the former
Midwest Steel/Mountaineer Metals building at
11:15 p.m. on Saturday,

The fire at Belt Transfer destroyed the nearly century old building
along East Main Street.

March 16 for a working
fire at the building. The
building was being used
by Belt Transfer at the
time of the fire.
Around 70 firefighters from the 5 stations
responded to bring the
fire under control. Crews
were on scene for about

five hours before clearing
the scene from the initial
call. Pomeroy Firefighters were called back later
in the day for hot spots
and smoldering pockets
of fire in the building.
Fire crews were able
to contain the fire to the
one building, without

spreading to nearby
buildings including a
business office on one
side and an older brick
building on the other.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called in
to handle the investigation into the cause of the
fire.
According to local
historian Jordan Pickens,
the building was built
in 1921 as the Pomeroy
Machine Company and
was sold to the Parkersburg Rig and Reel,
employing around 500
men and playing a part
in the onset of America’s
Iron Age. In 1961, the
building became a branch
of the Midwest Steel Corporation. Most recently,
it was Belt Transfer.

Marker placed

Nelson Story

BEDFORD TWP. —
Meigs County’s third
Bicentennial Marker was
unveiled last week in
Bedford Township.
The Bedford Township
marker is in recognition
of Nelson Story, who was
born in Burlingham in
1838. The marker was
placed at the intersection of U.S. Route 33 and
Bedford Town Hall Road
(the last road to the left
on the four-lane coming
from Pomeroy toward
Athens).
Bicentennial Ambassadors Grant Adams,
Cooper Schagel, Mattison Finlaw and Brielle
Newland led the unveiling ceremony, reading
information about Story’s
life.
The marker for Story
reads, “Born in Burlingham, Ohio,Story was a
famous pioneer, businessman, philanthropist and
magnate of the American West. He migrated
west, and after striking
it rich on a gold claim,
purchased 1,000 head of
longhorn cattle, which

he drove from Texas
to Montana. There he
would spend much of his
life and help establish
Montana State University. His cattle drive later
inspired the novel and
movie Lonesome Dove.”
In an column last fall,
local historian Jordan
Pickens wrote about
Story.
Nelson Story was born
on April 4, 1838, in Burlingham, Meigs County,
Ohio, to Ira and Hannah
Story, originally from
New Hampshire. Nelson
was their youngest son;
by the time he turned
18, both of his parents
had died. After trying his
hand at teaching school,
then spending two years
at Ohio University, Story
headed west to Kansas
Territory. He made his
way to the Army Post
of Fort Leavenworth

where he was hired on
as a “bullwhacker” or
teamster, someone who
would drive pack animals
hauling goods across
long distances. By 1862,
Story was hauling goods
out of Denver, Colorado,
and once on a trip to
Missouri he met Ellen
Trent and married her in
Kansas later that year. By
1863, Story, tired of the
teamster life, decided to
try his hand as a prospector in the Montana gold
fields.
By June, Story had
mined about $30,000
worth of gold around
Alder Gulch, Montana.
By today’s standards,
Nelson Story would have
mined nearly $607,000
worth of gold. During his
tenure in Montana, Story
went on to become a
charter member of one of
Montana’s first Masonic

lodges, as well as served
on a vigilance committee, a group voluntarily
enforcing law and order.
Story decided to trade
his $30,000 worth of gold
for $20,000 cash.
Story traveled to Fort
Worth, Texas, and purchased 1,000 head of cattle (although some sources say closer to 3,000)
for around $10 a head. At
this time, cattle could be
purchased for very little
in Texas due to postconfederate economies,
and a high supply due to
eastern and British interests in the market which
led to overpopulation.
From April to December
1866, Story overcame
“jayhawkers” in Kansas,
after being denied putting cattle on trains from
fear of disease. He then

decided to head the
cattle up the Bozeman
trail. During that drive,
Story defied orders from
Colonel Henry B. Carrington of The United
States Army to stop his
advance north due to the
threat of Indians. Story
eventually fought Sioux
and Crow Indians in
Wyoming while on his
way to Montana. Fortunately for Story’s crew of
around 30, only one died
and two were injured in
the drive from Texas to
Montana. While this was
not the first cattle to be
driven to Montana, it is
the first herd of cattle to
be driven from Texas to
Montana.
Once he arrived in Bozeman, Montana, Story
sold some of his beef to
miners at an astounding
profit, making 10 times
more than he paid for
them in Texas. Others
he kept and started his
own ranch in Paradise
Valley, Montana. In 1882,
Story opened the Story
Flour Mill at the mouth
of Bridger Creek, producing up to 100 bushels of
flour a day. Story was the
major supplier of beef
and flour for the U.S.
Army at Fort Ellis, Fort
C.F. Smith, and for the
nearby Indian Reservations in southeastern
Montana. This business
deal eventually made
Story the first millionaire
in Bozeman.
In 1876, the Army
accused him of defrauding the Crow nation by
filling pork barrels with
offal, double-counting
single sacks of flour,
passing off calves as
fully-grown cattle, and
attempting to bribe an

the grand jurors. He
also had a terrible temper which resulted in
violence on more than
one occasion. According
to one account, he was
notorious for pistol- or
cane-whipping those who
incurred his wrath and
once threw a brick at his
own son in anger.
Because of his fortune,
Story went on to build a
mansion on West Main
Street in Bozeman, and
it was so elaborate and
grand in design, it was
often mistaken as the
Gallatin County Courthouse which sat across
the street.
Nelson Story died on
March 10, 1926, at age
87 in Los Angeles, California, and is buried in
Sunset Hills Cemetery,
Bozeman, Montana.

ELIZABETH, W.Va. — Defense dominated the
day.
The Meigs softball team is off to an unbeaten
start after allowing just two runs on Saturday at
Don Godbey Field, as the Lady Marauders claimed
a 4-2 win over Wahama and a 11-0 triumph over
host Wirt County in non-conference action. Not
all was lost for the Lady Falcons either, as they
bounced back for a 14-0 win over the host Lady
Tigers.
Against the Lady Falcons (4-1), Meigs (2-0)
took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, before
Wahama tied it in the bottom of the third.
The Lady Marauders broke the 1-1 tie with a
pair of runs on three hits and an error in the top of
the fifth inning. Meigs added an insurance run in
the top of the sixth, but Wahama got that run back
in the bottom half of the frame. The Lady Falcons,
however, stranded three runners on base over the
final two stanzas and fell by a 4-2 final.
Breanna Zirkle was the winning pitcher of
record in a complete game, allowing two runs, one
earned, on eight hits. Zirkle struck out eight batters without issuing a free pass.
Hannah Rose took the loss in seven inning
of work for Wahama, giving up four runs, three
earned, on 11 hits and a walk, while striking out
four batters.
Leading the Lady Marauders at the plate, Ciera
Older was 2-for-3 with two runs and a double,
Katie Hawkins was 2-for-4 with a double and an
RBI, while Bailey Swatzel singled twice in three atbats. Taylor Swartz doubled once and scored once,
Zirkle doubled once and drove in two runs, while
Hannah Durst had a double and an RBI.
Alyssa Smith and Breanna Lilly both singled
once in the win, while Jadyn Floyd scored once.
The Lady Falcons were led by Maddy VanMatre,
who was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Emily
VanMatre tripled once and scored once, while
Rose added a single and a run. Tanner King, Victoria VanMatre, Hannah Billups and Bailee Bumgarner each singled once in the setback, while Lauren
Noble earned an RBI.
Meigs committed a trio of errors and stranded
six runners on base, while Wahama had a pair of
errors and eight runners left on base.
Against Wirt County (0-7), Meigs was held

Point Pleasant tops Wahama, 9-4
By Bryan Walters

POINT PLEASANT,
W.Va. — The third inning
was big … both ways
around.
Both teams combined
for 10 runs and a pair of
lead changes during an
explosive third frame, but
host Point Pleasant ultimately won the battle to
remain unbeaten Friday
night with a 9-4 decision
over visiting Wahama in a
non-conference matchup
of Mason County programs.
The host Big Blacks
(4-0) built a 1-0 lead in
the bottom of a second
as Joel Beattie scored
on a two-out RBI-single
by Sam Pinkerton, but
the White Falcons (2-1)
countered with their only
offensively outburst of the
evening.
Ethyn Barnitz produced a one-out single
to start the third, then
advanced to second on a
walk to David Hendrick.
Jonathan Frye followed by
laying down a supposed
sacrifice bunt that instead
turned into an error, putting runners at the corners after Barnitz scored
for a one-all contest.
Frye ended up stealing
second on the first pitch
to Tyler Bumgarner, then
Bumgarner lifted his first
career over-the-fence
home run to left-center.
The three-run blast gave
the Red and White their
only lead of the night at
4-1.
The Big Blacks also
found some offensive
rhythm in their half of the
third as 10 batters came

to the plate, resulting in
six runs on five walks, a
hit, a fielder’s choice and
a hit batter.
Carter Smith started
the rally bid by being
plunked to lead things off,
then Miles Williams drew
a walk before Brody Jeffers launched a rocket on
a straight line to the left
fielder for the first out of
the inning.
Beattie and Kyelar Morrow both drew free passes
to force home Smith for
a 4-2 deficit, then Tanner
Mitchell singled to left
while driving in both Williams and Beattie for a
four-all contest.
Pinkerton followed
with a walk to reload the
bases, but Josh Wamsley
grounded into a fielder’s
choice that resulted in
Morrow being forced out
at home.
Mitchell ended up scoring the eventual gamewinning run on a passed
ball, then a wild pitch
ultimately allowed both
Pinkerton and Wamsley
to score while extending the lead out to 7-4
through three complete.
The White Falcons
mustered just four hits
and six baserunners the
rest of the way, with half
of those baserunners getting as far as second base.
The Red and Black, on
the other hand, continued
churning out insurance
runs the rest of the night
— starting in the bottom
half of the fourth.
Williams led things off
by being hit by a pitch,
then stole second and
advanced to third on a
groundout by Jeffers. Williams came in to score

after a Beattie sacrifice
fly to center, giving the
hosts an 8-4 edge.
PPHS added another
run in the sixth after a
Beattie double allowed
Hunter Blain to score
from second, wrapping up
the five-run outcome.
The Red and White
outhit the hosts by a 9-6
overall margin and also
committed only one of
the three errors in the
contest. Point Pleasant,
however, drew three extra
walks (5-2) and benefited
from all three hit batsmen.
The Big Blacks ended
up leaving only six runners on base, while the
guests stranded nine on
the bags. Both teams also
used a trio of pitchers

apiece over the course of
the night.
Joe Herdman was the
winning pitcher of record
after allowing zero runs,
three hits and one walk
over three innings of
relief while fanning six.
David Hendrick took
the loss after surrendering seven runs (six
earned), four hits and
four walks over 2 frames
while striking out one.
Beattie paced the Big
Blacks with two hits and
two RBIs, while Tanner
Mitchell also drove in two
runs with a hit. Blain,
Jeffers and Pinkerton also
had a safety apiece for the
victors.
