Rio plants ‘food forest’
By Dean Wright

deanwright@civitasmedia.com

Beth Sergent | OVP News

Rodney Wallbrown, WVU Extension Agent for Mason County, is
retiring on Aug. 31. An open house celebrating his retirement is
set for 5-8 p.m., Saturday at Bellemead United Methodist Church.

Sowing seeds
of retirement
By Beth Sergent
bsergent@civitasmedia.com

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — If anyone knows
about sowing seeds, it’s Rodney Wallbrown.
Wallbrown is a native of Spencer, W.Va., but
since 1972 has become a familiar face to many
in Mason County, W.Va., when he arrived as
a vocational agriculture teacher at the Mason
County Career Center. Then, in 1989, he took a
position as the West Virginia University Extension
Agent for Mason County.
After 43 years working in Mason County,
Wallbrown will be retiring on Aug. 31. Though,
as he put it, he’s not just going home to sit on the
porch. He said he plans to continue working in
the community in any way possible to promote
vocational agriculture and says Mason County
has so many opportunities for practically every
producer when it comes to agribusiness.
Agribusiness is something Wallbrown knows
about with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree
in agriculture education from WVU. He’s also well
versed in everything “agriculturally speaking”
simply by being visible and available to all of those
with questions about what he’s devoted his life to.
Wallbrown said it’s important to be out there
among the people who are doing this important
work, which ultimately comes back to everyone’s
dinner table at one point or another, or at the
very least, arrives in someone’s flower bed or in
a project for a 4H member or during an event for
CEOS. Extension agents are just that, extensions
of WVU who relay the newest, best information
to people on how to better their farms, 4H clubs,
CEOS membership and homes.
“I’ve enjoyed almost every minute of these 43
years in agriculture,” Wallbrown said, saying the
only thing he didn’t enjoy during those other
minutes would be some of the paperwork.
“The people of Mason County are wonderful
to work with,” Wallbrown said, recalling when
he got hired to teach here years ago and how
he was excited to be in an area known for those
opportunities in agriculture, including the number
of farms, the available land and as he put it, “the
attitude of the people.”
Wallbrown said getting to be here was really a
“dream come true” when it came to finding a place
to practice what he loved and had been educated
to do.
As for what he’ll miss most, Wallbrown said that
would be the people, but, again, he’s not going
anywhere; he’s just changing hats. As for who will
replace him, Wallbrown said WVU goes through a
process of advertising for his job, interviews and
then the WVU extension committee will choose a
candidate so his chair won’t sit empty for too long.

RIO GRANDE — Rio
Grande residents started
planting a “food forest”
back in April and continued planning the next
stage of their operation
at a meeting Thursday
in Rio Grande Memorial
Park.
Rio Grande Food Forest
members have planted
more than 50 different
food-producing trees and
plants. Apples, hazelnuts, pecans and pears
are among some of the
foods being grown and
the group intends to plant
more. Paw paw trees are
some of the next plants
to make an appearance.
Trees were planted first
because they take the longest to grow of all plants
before producing food.
“The whole idea is to
eventually turn this area
into a giant eatery,” said
Rio Grande Mayor Matt
Easter. “If someone is sitting at home one night or
just walking in the park
and they feel like eating,
they should be able to
walk into the forest and
do that. That’s why we’re
putting it here.”
According to Easter,
he and other community
members came up with
the food forest idea while
having a few beers in his

ing to make a sustainable
community food garden
was something that
would benefit the village
in terms of community
fellowship, local learning
opportunities and fun.
The food forest is stationed in the park near
Rio Grande Elementary
School and many of its
trees were planted at the
crest of a hill. Easter said
the project cost a little
more than $800.
According to permaculturalist Kevin Whetstone,
of Oak Hill, the best
way to grow sustainable
food sources is to mimic
nature. Plant in places
and in situations similar
to how nearby flora is

Buckhannon man
returns home
for a film project
By Anna Patrick
Associated Press

CHARLESTON,
W.Va. — Rob Raffety
owes a lot to the digital
revolution.
While he was growing up in West Virginia,
during high school, and
then college, money
was tight.
Despite his longstanding desire to try
his hand at filmmaking,
he couldn’t justify the
costly investment. It’s
easy to chalk up your
dreams to a lofty goal
when even the price tag
for equipment seems
out of range.
But times change and
so does the cost of technology.
Raffety can still
remember when he
realized that he could
actually afford a video
camera.
“I remember walking
into Best Buy in the
early 2000s. I saw a
video camera with desktop editing software. .
It’s like $250. What?!”
He said he thought,
“I might just give that a
shot.”
And he has.
Over the past 10
years, Raffety has been
trying his hand at filmmaking in his spare
time. He has produced,
directed and acted in a
number of short films
and now owns a production company, Tragedy
Plus Time.
“Basically, I’m the
story of what I think
is happening all across
the industry. The barriers to entry are very
low now. There are still
some costs, but there
is absolute truth in a
sense that anybody can
make a movie.”
His films “Game
Night” and “Retirement”
won back-to-back grand
prize awards in the
Speakeasy Shorts Film
Challenge held in Washington, D.C., in 2013
and 2014. To participate
in the challenge, Raffety
and team members were
tasked with creating a
short film from a provided story in the course
of 72 hours.
For the George
Mason University adjunct professor,
every film project is
a project of passion,
each building upon
previous experiences

and knowledge gained.
Beginning Saturday,
Raffety and his cast
and crew were to begin
filming his newest short
film, “Muck,” in a place
that he fondly calls
home — Buckhannon.
Gaining inspiration
from the hugely famous
“Serial” podcast,
“Muck” tells the fictional story of a young,
talented journalist sent
out on his first field
assignment to solve a
missing-person cold
case that took place in
Buckhannon more than
20 years ago. Just like
“Serial,” the protagonist
creates podcasts to
document his progress
and track the case.
“It’s ‘Fargo’ meets
‘Winter’s Bone’ through
the lens of a ‘Serial’
podcast,” Raffety
explained.
A 1993 graduate of
Buckhannon-Upshur
High School and a 1997
graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College,
Raffety said he always
wanted to tell a story
and shoot a film in his
hometown.
“I think there is something about the sort of
community culture of
a rural area, particularly West Virginia. You
know your neighbors.
Everyone is generally
supportive of everyone
else. I like that feeling,
and I wanted to explore
that in a story from the
perspective of a person
who hasn’t been to that
part of the country.”
Like many people he’s
encountered, the film’s
protagonist first comes
to Buckhannon “feeling
a little superior to the
townsfolk.”
“Hopefully over the
course of this (film) he’s
not only trying to solve
this mystery or trying
to understand what happened in the ’90s, he’s
also hopefully . learning
to appreciate the culture
of the area that is different to where he’s from
and anything he’s been
exposed to before.”
The “Muck” cast and
crew will film at some
of his old stomping
grounds, including the
Wesleyan campus, the
roller skating rink and
the nearby bowling alley.
The film’s storyline is
entirely fiction and will
run approximately 25
minutes in length.
The screenplay is an
outgrowth of a pilot
episode assignment that
Raffety completed for a
television writing class
at GMU. The film’s
editor and cameraman,
Travis Edwards, and the
soundtrack composer,
Satya Thallam, are
major collaborators on
the script.
The low-budget film
— operating on an estimated $10,000 budget
— is Raffety’s biggest
effort to date. He’s hired
professional actors and
a trained crew for the
filming and editing process. He’s supporting
the film financially without using any online
fundraising campaigns,
such as Kickstarter or
Indiegogo.

By Marcus Geiger
For the Times-Sentinel

With today’s technology, you may never have
to go to an office or even make a phone call to do
your business with Social Security. Current workers and people who receive benefits can join the
millions who already interact with the agency by

You are never too young to start thinking

gun violence.”

According to Dr. John R. Lott
Jr., an economist who has written
extensively on gun issues in the
United States, someone legally
uses a firearm to stop a crime 2
million times a year.
I will never understand why otherwise intelligent people imagine
that the ability to dial 911 is all the
protection they need.
However, the right to keep and
bear arms, which is both a Godgiven natural right as well as a
constitutional one, is only nominally about self-defense. The real
reason the Founders wanted an
armed populace was because they
knew it was better for government
to fear the people than for the
people to fear the government.
That is, the gun was meant for
self-defense from not only common criminals, but also from government oppression and foreign
invaders; street thugs as well as
government thugs.
Every one of the major genocides of the 20th century were preceded by strict gun control laws.
As Thomas Jefferson put it: “No
free man shall ever be debarred
the use of arms. The strongest
reason for the people to retain the
right to keep and bear arms is, as
a last resort, to protect themselves
against tyranny in government.”
As tragic as the shooting in
Virginia was, allowing the government and the gun-grabbers to
use the tragedy as an excuse to
deprive the people of their last
defense against a totalitarian state
would be even more tragic.

As for Wallbrown’s new chapter,
it will include more time with wife,
Sherry, and daughters Kristi, Kara and
Kessa, and their families. Wallbrown
said he also hopes to volunteer more at
his church, but whatever his new story
holds, it will most certainly contain
seeds he sowed during 43 years worth
of work in his adopted home county.

also accepted.
In the district’s program,
there are types of plastics that
are not accepted for recycling,
and those include children’s
toys, outdoor furniture and
water piping. Ceramic items,
window glass, metal hangers, electronics and car parts
are also not accepted at the
single-stream facilities. When
these items are put into the
bins, they must be sorted
upon delivery to the recycling
plants and disposed of at that
time. This costs the district
time and money that could
have been used for materials
that can be recycled.
Recyclers are encouraged to
flatten cardboard boxes and
empty materials from garbage
bags before placing them in
bins. Flattened boxes take up
less space in containers than
empty unflattened ones.
The district asks that no
plastic bags of any kind
be placed in the bins, as
they clog the technology at
recycling plants. If items
are brought in plastic bags,
the district asks that people
empty the contents of the
bags and dispose of them
elsewhere.

four passes for 55 yards.
“Meigs has a good football team,” second-year
GAHS head coach and
former Marauder assistant coach Josh Riffe said
after the game. “They
are well coached, we just
need to fix our mistakes
and get better. Kole
(Carter) really played
well tonight for us, he has
a huge heart and battles
out there. It’s tough
coaching against one of
your closest friends.”
“Overall a win is a
win,” third-year Marauder coach Mike Bartrum
said. “I’m not happy
with the fumbles and the
turnovers. When you play
against a good friend, it’
tough. We just need to
cut down on mistakes and
get better.”
Gallia Academy will
play county rival River

SUNDAY EVENING

The Black Knights
(1-1-0) found themselves
in an early 1-0 hole, but
the guests rallied with
four consecutive scores
to secure a 4-1 cushion
at the intermission. The
Blue Devils (0-2-0) rallied for a late goal to cut
their deficit in half, but
ultimately never came
closer the rest of the
way.
PPHS outshot the
Blue and White by an
18-16 overall margin,
with GAHS actually
putting more shots on
goal by a slim 13-12
edge.
Isaiah Lester gave
Gallia Academy its only
lead of the night with a
goal in the opening minutes, but then Austin
Adams and Tyler Hill
each contributed two
goals apiece over the
next 30-plus minutes —
allowing the Red, Black
and White to turn a 1-0
deficit into a sizable
three-goal cushion at
halftime.
Logan Carpenter provided the only goal of
the second half, which
ended the scoring at
4-2. Adams also assisted on one of the goals
scored by Hill.
Point Pleasant keeper
Cole Walker made
11 saves for the victors, while Caden Wilt
stopped eight shots for
the hosts. PPHS also
claimed a 5-1 advantage
in corner kicks.
The Black Knights
return to action Saturday when they host
Ripley at noon. Gallia
Academy makes its first
road trip of the season
on Tuesday when it
travels to Athens for a
Southeastern Ohio Athletic League match at
6:30 p.m.

Maxwell, secretary, Robert Lemley, driver, and Justin Gilmore, driver.

Roush retires after 53 years
By Lindsay Kriz
lkriz@civitasmedia.com

MINERSVILLE — In
1962, Jerry Roush was
a man digging ditches
when he heard that a job
was opening up.
So he grabbed it.
And now, 53 years later,
at 73 years old, he’s leaving the same building
he’s worked in for over 50
years.
“I appreciate all the
people who I’ve worked
with through the years,”
Roush said.
Roush’s job included
driving what is known as
a “straight truck” full of
fuel to nearby locations in
Jackson, Gallia and Meigs
counties. The place where
he works is now known as
G&M Fuel Co., formerly
known as Ashland Oil.
Throughout his time at
the job, Roush said he’s
seen some major changes
in Meigs County, and
added that he was on the
scene to deliver fuel when
the dams in the river
and the area coal mines
were first being built and
used. He said he also
remembers the building
of hydro-plants as well.
“When they built
Mountaineer Power
Plant, I was the first one
there when they started
moving dirt,” he said.
One of the things
Roush said he remembers most about his early
career was an incident
in which the local coal
mines flooded. Roush
said officials had to drill
down into the mines to
pump all the water out —
according to Roush, they
were pumping out millions of gallons per day.
“The water apparently
had acid in it, and they
put treatment in (the
water) to take the acid
out, and it just instantly
turned blue,” he said.
Roush also remembers
the change in technology
throughout the years, and
how it made his job simpler. Specifically, Roush
remembers when calculators came along.
“We had to do everything by hand. We had
just sheets of paper, like
a yellow tablet,” he said.
“So when someone first
gave me a calculator, I
said, ‘Why would I want
one of them things?’ But
I found out how easy they
were.”
Some of the challenges

ABOVE, Roush holds a photo of himself during
the early days of his career. Before the building
was G&M, it was known as Ashland Oil. AT RIGHT,
Roush received “The Golden Nozzle” after 53
years of service in the same building. BELOW,
Roush also received a stopwatch. Engraved inside
reads “G&M 53 years.”

of Roush’s career involved
attempting to deliver fuel
after a heavy snow. He
said the rising sun helped
to melt the snow enough
to drive through, but that
mud left over could also
present a problem.
Throughout his career
Roush worked under
seven supervisors. During
the Ashland Oil years,
Roush worked for Galen
Brown, Gene Coleman,
Bob Meyers and Hershael McClure. Under
G&M Fuel Co., Roush
worked for Don Swisher.
According to Roush,
up until 1980, company
employees delivered to
service stations. But now
that semi-trucks mainly
deliver to those stations,

he and his fellow employees delivered to industrial
farms and homes.
Throughout his career,
Roush has worked
alongside his 67-year-old
brother, Jake Roush, who
still works for G&M.
“If everybody had
brothers like my brother,
Jake, the world would be
a better place to live,”
Jerry said.
While he said he
doesn’t have too many
specific retirement plans,
Roush and his wife, Sharon, will be woodworking
and gardening. She said
she’s proud of the longevity of her husband’s job.
“It’s a long time for one
company,” she said.
At his retirement party,

friends and family came
to wish Jerry well in his
retirement.
“It’s really a pleasure
to work with Jerry. He’s
a really a good Christian
man,” former coworker
Jeff Johnson said. “You
don’t get that very often
anymore, working with a
good Christian person.”
Roush, who attends both
Independent Holiness
Church in Rutland and
Faith Baptist Church in
Mason, W.Va., gave credit
for his success to God.
“The Lord’s been
mighty good to me,” he
said. “I give him credit
for all.”
