Lakin population could change to male inmates
By Beth Sergent
bsergent@civitasmedia.com

LAKIN — Changes may
be coming to the Lakin
Correctional Facility and that’s
left many in the community
wondering what the future
holds.
Larry Messina,
communications director for
the West Virginia Department
of Military Affairs and Public
Safety, confirmed the state
has bid on a piece of federallyowned property, namely the
Sugar Grove Naval Base in

Pendelton County which
the government is closing in
September. The West Virginia
Division of Corrections, along
with KVC Health Systems, a
nonprofit, has also bid on the
property.
Messina said the tentative
proposal is to purchase the
property and convert it into a
female prison with the capacity
to hold 613 inmates. As of
Thursday, Lakin’s census was
513 inmates being housed at
the facility, Messina said. This
female population would be
shifted to the Sugar Grove site

and a male population would
be housed at Lakin, under this
proposal.
Messina said Jim Rubenstein,
commissioner of WVDOC,
identified the site at Sugar
Grove as a possible new home
for female inmates because
of a “backlog” of sentenced
prisoners currently waiting
in regional jails. Messina said
there are roughly 1,100 inmates
who have been sentenced
but are serving their time in
regional jails across the state
awaiting a bed in an actual
prison. The ultimate goal is to

reduce this backlog.
If this proposal comes to
fruition, it’s estimated to cost
$16 million to convert Sugar
Grove into an appropriate
prison facility and get it
operational, Messina said. He
added at this time there are no
plans to make major changes
to the actual, structural facility
at Lakin if the conversion
happened.
Messina said all correctional
officers have the same training
for dealing with either male
or female inmates. He added
when it comes to staffing, he

Faith in God needed to rebuild Christian wall
There are those of the
Church who are burdened
about the current weakness of
the Church’s spiritual influence.
Based upon Scripture, the
two previous articles have
referred to the concern in
terms of the Christian wall that
has been breaking down. You
perhaps wonder what it will
take to rebuild the Christian
wall where it is breeched and
broken. We have taken our cues
for answers from Nehemiah
chapter four.
Part of the answer for Nehemiah for successfully rebuilding
the Jerusalem wall involved
standing up to the critics. Criticism can stop many projects.
But, Nehemiah stood up to the
criticism of the opposition by
way of reasoned responses and
courageous determination.
The same must be true for
rebuilding the Christian wall.
The Church must stand up to
the critics by reasoning well the
Scripture. I have always instructed our sons on this very point
— reason well the Scripture.
Apostle Paul said, “… withstand

piece by piece, and, when you
do, you become prepared spiritually to deal with the spiritual
battles that most assuredly
come from rebuilding efforts
of the Christian wall, as well
as any other spiritual battle
with which you are confronted.
Christians cannot expect to
be victorious unless they are
spiritually prepared with the
necessary parts of God’s armor
involved in their lives.
How shall the people of the
Church prepare spiritually?
Nehemiah told the people, “Be
not afraid. Remember the Lord,
which is great and terrible.” He
encouraged them in terms of
preparing to have faith in God.
If the people of the Church
are to expect success in rebuilding the Christian wall, it will
require having faith in God.
This is a spiritual-preparation
must. While it is true that
pride goes before a fall, it is
exceedingly true that faith in
God precedes spiritual victory.
After all, the Scripture points
out that “greater is He that is in

… and this is the victory that
overcomes the world, even our
faith.” We can absolutely trust
the Lord.
How shall the people of the
Church prepare spiritually?
This point comes from a simple
instruction from Nehemiah that
the workers “lodge in Jerusalem” each night. A comparative
point to cite for the people of
the Church is that we decisively
“lodge in the house,” that we
remain decisively committed to
Church attendance.
Besides, worship at church is
not a Scriptural suggestion, it
is an expectation. Church is not
only the place to corporately
worship God, but it is also a
place where we advance and
mature in spiritual preparation.
Failure to attend church faithfully by people associated with
the church has definitely weakened the strength and influence
of the Church at large.
Do the people of the Church
have the spiritual will to
rebuild the Christian wall?

Baptist Church in Mason, W.Va.

A HUNGER FOR MORE

Respect your earthly, Stand firm in

You probably realize that this Sunday is
Father’s Day, right?
Do you realize we all have two fathers:
God, our heavenly father and our earthly
father? They both love us more than we
can possibly realize and only want the
best for us, so they each give us rules and
advice to help us have happier lives.
Ann

is best for us. Our earthly father is older
and more experienced than we are, so he
gives us guidelines, rules and advice too. Sometimes if
we don’t listen, we might even get in trouble and end up
being disciplined. It’s hard to understand at the time, but
this is for our own good, so we learn from our mistakes
and make a better choice the next time.
God says in Proverbs, Chapter 4, Verse 1: “Listen, my
sons and daughters, to a father’s instruction. Pay attention and gain understanding.”
Maybe your earthly father won’t always have the
right or best answer, but God has blessed most of us
with fathers who truly love us and would do anything
in the world for us. God tells us that we should honor
and respect our dad. We should also pray for him and
ask God to give him wisdom and strength in the task of
parenting. When you pray, thank God for your father and
then thank your dad personally for loving you and providing a house, food, clothes, and for being a good example
of what it means to be a father.
If your earthly father is not available today, always
remember you do have a father — one even bigger and
more loving than anyone else could possibly be in God. He
will always be your daddy and guide you in the right paths
through life. Remember to thank him, too, for being your
father no matter what may happen in the times to come.
Let’s pray: Dear God, thank you for my earthly dad. I
would ask that you bless him with health, wisdom, and
the strength to be the father You want him to be. Thank
you too for being my father for all time in all ways. In
Your name, Amen.

Man is a child of God
What is man? Especially
when compared to an all
powerful Creator?
It is a question asked by
David some three thousand
years ago in the Psalms.
David wrote, “When I
consider Your heavens, the
work of Your fingers, the

You have ordained, what is

crowned him with glory and

all the earth. Also we can
witness the ability of men to
show love and practice righteousness. There is a higher
understanding native to man
which no animal possesses.
Only men know right from
wrong and the very existence
of morality within men is a
powerful evidence for the
God who instilled the conscience within us.
What is man?
We are, in short, the children of God, fashioned in His
image and we can know that
God loves us above all the
world. We can also know that
God has high expectations
for us and it breaks His divine
heart when we do not live up
to our potential. Thus when
the Scriptures contemplate
sin, we note that they say, “All
have sinned and fallen short
of the glory of God.” (Romans
3:23) If it is God’s image we
are made in, then it is God’s
glory and righteousness we

should seek. As the apostle
Peter once noted, we have a
responsibility to aim higher.
“Be sober, and rest your hope
fully upon the grace that is
to be brought to you at the
revelation of Jesus Christ;
as obedient children, not
conforming yourselves to the
former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called
you is holy, you also be holy
in all your conduct, because it
is written, “Be holy, for I am
holy.” (1 Peter 1:13-15)
God expects great things
of His children and through
His grace and the salvation
of Christ, we can achieve
those things.
At the Church of Christ,
we invite you to serve and
worship God with us. Won’t

On Thursday, Cadle expressed his
frustration about not being briefed on the
status of the situation and having several
unanswered questions. He added the prison
was initially presented to the public as being
a women’s facility and felt that’s how it should
stay. Cadle said he’s also concerned the state
is “trying to get rid of troublemakers” when it
comes to some of the male inmates who would
be at Lakin if the transition happened.
“No decision has been made yet,” Messina
added, saying the state has not yet made a
decision whether or not to commit to the

Chicago celebrates Blackhawks
CHICAGO (AP) —
Jonathan Toews kissed
and hoisted the Stanley
Cup as he was introduced
toward the end of the latest
raucous rally honoring the
Chicago Blackhawks. Then
the captain headed toward
the back of the stage at Soldier Field.
The roaring crowd
wanted more and, as usual,
he delivered.
“We all know this is amazing to be able to hoist this
thing,” a hoarse Toews said.
“But to do it on home ice in
front of you guys, in front of
our fans, to share this with
you guys, the best fans in
the world — it doesn’t get
any better than this.”
He thanked the crowd
and added: “Maybe the
only way it does get better
is if we win four.”
Tens of thousands of
fans turned out on a warm,
humid Thursday to cheer
their beloved Blackhawks
as they celebrated their
third Stanley Cup championship in the past six years
with a downtown parade
and a rally at Soldier Field.
Goalie Corey Crawford
told the fans “you guys
made this unbelievable.”
Duncan Keith, the defense-

man who won the Conn
Smythe trophy as the
playoffs MVP, hinted at
another win saying, “four
sounds better than three.”
Earlier, the crowd cheered
for Blackhawks legends
Bobby Hull, Denis Savard
and Tony Esposito.
Former Blackhawks star
Stan Mikita, who suffers
from a progressive brain
disorder, wasn’t left out.
“Stan … we’re thinking
of you,” said Hall of Fame
play-by-play announcer Pat
Foley, the emcee.
The Blackhawks captured
their latest championship
with a victory over Tampa
Bay in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final at the United
Center on Monday night. It
was the first time Chicago
has won the Cup on home
ice since 1938 and the
Blackhawks haven’t stopped
celebrating since.
Players, coaches and
team executives rode to
the rally in double-decker
buses, passing screaming
fans of all ages decked out
in red and black, as they
wound their way from the
United Center downtown
to Michigan Avenue and
the rally at the home of
the Chicago Bears. “Let’s

hockey champions Thursday in Chicago.

go Hawks!” chants rang
throughout downtown.
It was a familiar scene for
this Original Six franchise,
and another reminder just
how far it has come in recent
seasons, with Toews and Patrick Kane leading the way.
The Blackhawks won it
all in 2010, ending a 49-year
championship drought, and
captured the Cup again
in 2013. But this year’s
run was different. The
Blackhawks endured the
suicide of their longtime
equipment manager Clint

Reif, the death of former
teammate Steve Montador
and Patrick Kane’s broken
collarbone.
Yet there they were on
Thursday, celebrating the
franchise’s sixth championship. Chicago is the first
NHL team to win three
titles in a six-year span
since Detroit in 1997, 1998
and 2002.
It’s hard to believe that
this organization not long
ago was little more than

an afterthought in Chicago and the “Madhouse
on Madison” felt more
like a library with its
sparse crowds. The late
owner Bill Wirtz refused
to televise home games
and drove away franchise
icons such as Hull and
Mikita.
Those two now have
statues outside the arena,
and the Blackhawks have
a vice-like grip on the city.
“What a great day for
the city of Chicago and
the state of Illinois,”
new Gov. Bruce Rauner,
decked out in a black
Toews jersey, said as he
exited the United Center
before the parade. “This
is fantastic to celebrate
one of the greatest franchises in all of sports.”
Soldier Field was
rocking in a way that it
rarely did last fall, with
the Bears struggling. But
with the Blackhawks taking center stage, there
was a different vibe at the
home of the Monsters of
the Midway. Fans held
up red placards that read
“one goal achieved.” Players took turns hoisting
and kissing the Cup as
fans cheered.
