Local PTSD
workshop
to be held
next month

Wednesday, May 20, 2015 s 50¢

Holzer ‘Senior Prom’

Staff Report

POMEROY — If you are involved
with public service through fire, EMS,
police or military, attend the workshop
to learn more about the signs and
symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder that can help you, as first
responders, to more effectively assist
others with a history of PTSD. The
event is offered as part of the Ohio
River Medical Mission and is free of
charge, but seating is limited. It will be
10 a.m. June 6 in the first floor library
at Meigs Local High School.
In your life, have you, or someone
you know, ever had any experience
that was so frightening, horrible or
upsetting that has caused: nightmares
or thoughts about the event when you
did not want to.
— A situation that you have tried
hard not to think about or gone out of
your way to avoid things that remind
you of it
— You to feel you were constantly
on guard, watchful, or easily startled
— You to feel numb or detached
from others, activities, or your surroundings
— You have little interest in doing
things
The workshop will be offered by
Dr. Anthony Peterson, section chief
of the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
programs at the Capt. James A. Lovell
Federal Health Care Center in North
Chicago, Ill.
Dr. Peterson graduated from Illinois
Wesleyan University with a Bachelor’s
of Arts in Psychology in 1995. He
earned a Master’s of Arts in Clinical
Psychology in 1999 and a Doctorate of
Psychology in 2003. He earned both of
his advanced degrees from the Illinois
School of Professional Psychology. Dr.
Peterson was commissioned a lieutenant in the Navy Medical Service Corps
and completed his pre-doctoral psychology internship at Naval Medical
Center San Diego in 2002.
Following his internship, Dr. Peterson was assigned as a staff psychologist at the Recruit Evaluation Unit,
Naval Health Clinic Great Lakes.
While serving with Naval Health Clinic
Great Lakes, Dr. Peterson deployed
with USS Saipan in 2005 in support of
Operation New Horizons in Haiti.
Dr. Peterson has also held positions
at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center as the Operation Enduring
Freedom / Operation Iraqi Freedom
Outreach Coordinator, and the Naval
Health Clinic Great Lakes in the
Outpatient Mental Health program.
In addition to his appointment at
the Captain James A. Lovell Federal
Health Care Center, Dr. Peterson is a
Navy Reserve Lieutenant Commander
who is assigned as the Executive Officer to 4th Marine Logistics Group, 4th
Medical Battalion, Surgical Company
Alpha.

GALLIPOLIS — There were
many proms in the area this
spring, but one gave new meaning
to the term Senior Prom.
Holzer Assisted Living in Gallipolis conducted its annual Senior
Prom on May 13.
Like all proms, a queen and king
were selected and music and decorations were included.
Dorothy “Pat” Mohrand and
Noah Houcka were selected by

residents as Prom Queen and
King. Students from Buckeye
Hills Career Center decorated the
facility and provided a picnic on
the covered patio area for the residents.
A local DJ was on hand with a
variety of music. Prom attendees
enjoyed trying different types of
dancing, including line dancing
and the twist. The event proved
that the ability to enjoy Prom is
timeless.

Jim Smith, of Middleport, throws dog food to the ducks and geese currently residing at
Mulberry Pond. Anyone who wishes to help feed the ducks may write a check to the Village
of Pomeroy and earmark it Mulberry Pond, or may deliver dog food, bread or cracked corn
to Mulberry Pond, where Smith can pick it up.

POMEROY — Jim Smith, chairman of the
Mulberry Community Pond, is looking to feed
the birds.
But he’s going to need some help doing it.
“I knew if the public knew we were out of
duck food, they’d be coming (to the pond),”
he said.
Smith took on the challenge of improving
the pond about 10 years ago when he retired
and over the years has done much to make
it more accessible to people of all ages, to
improve fishing by restocking the pond and
develop the park into a place for community
gatherings and recreational activities.

CINCINNATI — A Cincinnati
city councilman running for U.S.
Senate proposed six Democratic
primary debates around Ohio with
his veteran opponent.
P.G. Sittenfeld on Tuesday said
he and former Gov. Ted Strickland
should have issue-oriented sessions to engage, inform and excite
voters. He said the two can use
social media and technology to
reach more people in “a new kind
of debate for a new era in politics.”

The 30-year-old councilman has
rejected suggestions that Democrats should unite behind Strickland, a 73-year-old former congressman, in their quest to unseat
Republican Sen. Rob Portman in
what’s shaping up as a high-spending, hotly contested 2016 race. Sittenfeld said Democrats should have
a choice and that new leadership is
needed in Washington.
In a video posted on his YouTube
page, Sittenfeld pointed out that
the Democratic National Committee has sanctioned six debates for

the party’s presidential primary.
“I’m proposing that we also have
six debates that allow citizens to
compare our visions for the future
side-by-side,” Sittenfeld said, adding that the debates could focus on
issues such as the economy, education and environment and could
begin as soon as July 4 for next
spring’s primary.
A Strickland campaign spokesman said Sittenfeld hadn’t contacted Strickland about his proposal,
so the campaign isn’t aware of it.

he spent in prison.
The lawsuit details how officers
coerced Vernon into implicating
the men. Vernon has stated, and
the lawsuit repeats, that he was
on a school bus and heard the
fatal gunshots but did not see the
shooting itself. Detectives ignored
a suspect who had been implicated
by informants and his own mother,
the lawsuit said. That suspect was
convicted a few years later of multiple counts of armed robbery.
Jackson was roughed up during
a police interrogation, the lawsuit
said. Two detectives “repeatedly
put a phone book on Mr. Jackson’s
face and other areas of his body
and hit him through it so that it
would not leave any marks,” the
lawsuit said, but Jackson continued
to deny he killed anyone.
After Vernon had failed to pick
out Jackson and the Bridgemans
from a lineup, detectives yelled and
screamed at Vernon and threatened
to put his father and his ill mother
in jail unless he identified the men
as Franks’ killer, the lawsuit said.

leaving the Obama
administration. Despite
administration rules
requiring officials to
conduct business using
their government email
addresses, Clinton communicated exclusively via
a personal email account
run on a private server.
She has said she got
rid of about 30,000
emails she deemed exclusively personal. Only she
and perhaps a small circle of advisers know the
content of the discarded
communications.
The State Department
made its proposal to
release the emails by midJanuary in a federal court
filing Monday night,
as part of a Freedom of
Information Act lawsuit filed by Vice News.
John F. Hackett, who
is responsible for the
department’s responses
to FOIA requests, said in
the filing the department
had received the 55,000
pages of emails from
Clinton in paper form.
“Given the breadth and
importance of the many
foreign policy issues on
which the secretary of
state and the department work, the review of
these materials will likely
require consultation with
a broad range of subject
matter experts within
the department and
other agencies, as well as
potentially with foreign
governments,” he wrote.
The federal judge who
rejected the State Department proposal gave the
agency a week to craft
a schedule for releasing
the records, according to
Vice News lawyer Jeffrey
Light. State Department
spokesman Jeff Rathke
said the agency would
comply.

Clinton addressed the
email issue during a rare
question-and-answer
session with reporters.
Before Tuesday, it had
been nearly a month
since she had taken questions from journalists
who are trailing her from
stop to stop.
Her reluctance to take
questions has fueled criticism from Republicans
who say she’s dodging
tough issues. Some
Democrats have also worried that she has risked
looking entitled to the
nomination by avoiding
speaking about things
that other candidates for
the nomination are willing to tackle.
Following an hour-long
discussion with small
business owners in Cedar
Falls on Tuesday, Clinton
walked over to a waiting
crowd of reporters and
television cameras.
She briefly addressed
questions about her family’s charitable foundation
and the enormous sums
of money she and husband Bill Clinton have
made by giving speeches.
Financial disclosures
released last week
showed that Clinton and
her husband had made
$25 million on speeches
since January 2014.
Clinton said Tuesday
that while she and the
former president are
grateful for the opportunities they have had,
“we’ve never forgotten
where we came from.”
She also reiterated that
she had made a “mistake” in voting for the
Iraq War in 2003, wading
briefly into a debate that
has consumed the Republican presidential field in
recent days.

THEIR VIEW

GOP fast track
to the minority
By Robert Romano
Guest Columnist

Trade promotion authority for the president to
negotiate commercial treaties — which pass with
simple majority votes in both chambers of Congress
— has lapsed since 2007, when Democrats had
majorities.
Once Barack Obama became president, Democrats
never granted him trade authority. They could have.
But they never did.
Now, suddenly, with Republicans in the Senate
majority, Senate Democrats are more than willing to
provide just enough votes — mostly from seats that
they are in little danger of losing over the issue — to
allow trade authority to negotiate the Trans-Pacific
Partnership to come to the floor and pass. Why?
Quite simple, really.
Because, as Americans for Limited Government
President Rick Manning explained in a statement,
“These votes risk Senate Republican seats in Ohio,
Illinois, Indiana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and
Wisconsin to name just a few, putting the Senate
majority in real jeopardy in 2016.”
You read that right. Republican Rust Belt and other
vulnerable seats are coming up in the upcoming presidential cycle — and the Pacific trade deal puts a ripe
target on all of their backsides. And with a slim fourseat majority, the GOP’s margin for error is practically
zero.
In other words, it’s a trap, and Republican senators — on the mistaken fallacy that they are voting
to grant trade authority to the incoming Republican
president in 2017 — are walking into it willingly.
For starters, how do Republicans intend on winning
the White House in 2016 without Ohio?
And, what sort of Senate majority do they expect to
have in 2017 when they are now ordering their most
vulnerable members to the floor to set themselves
on fire over an issue a significant percentage of their
constituents abhor?
A recent poll by Democracy for America found twothirds of voters less likely to re-elect Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) if he comes out in favor of trade promotion authority and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
This is a political suicide pact, with members signing up to be targeted by labor unions who undoubtedly will be looking for blood should the Trans-Pacific
Partnership go through.
Which, guess who controls the timing of when the
actual trade agreement comes to the floor?
That’s right. President Obama. Once the Pacific
trade deal is through being negotiated, it can come to
the floor of the Senate as soon as 60 days afterward.
And Republicans will be anxious to enact it prior to
2017.
So, what will Obama do? Ensure that it comes to
the floor in the heart of the election campaign, to
make the vote as painful as possible — for Republicans, who will be clinging to a Senate majority.
Meanwhile, the only true constituency for the
Trans-Pacific Partnership resides not in the heartland,
but on K Street, Wall Street and Silicon Valley. Does
anyone think they care if Republicans keep a Senate
majority?
Who knows? Maybe Republican senators don’t even
care if they keep a Senate majority.
Even Democrats’ token opposition to trade authority just days ago — to fight for “enforceable” currency
provisions in the agreement don’t you know — was
that much more of a ploy.
First, to shore up their political base, which hates
the treaty and is suspicious of global trade, by pretending to fight for working Americans.
And second, to unite Republicans in support of the
treaty — giving them ownership of the hot potato,
which they now have full title to.
That is, unless senators like Rob Portman of Ohio,
Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Kelly Ayotte of New
Hampshire, and Richard Shelby of Alabama stop it —
while they still have a chance.
Otherwise, the only fast track being voted on may
very well be a Republican fast track to the Senate
minority in 2016.

Shootout started with parking dispute
By Emily Schmall
Associated Press

WACO, Texas — A deadly
weekend shootout involving rival
motorcycle gangs apparently began
with a parking dispute and someone
running over a gang member’s foot,
police said Tuesday.
Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick
Swanton said an uninvited group
appeared for the meeting of a loose
confederation of biker gangs Sunday
at a restaurant.
One man was injured when a vehicle rolled over his foot. That caused
a dispute that continued inside the
restaurant, where fighting and then
shooting began, before the melee
spilled back outside, Swanton said.
Authorities offered few details.
It was not clear which gang was
responsible for running over the
biker’s foot, or which gang the
aggrieved biker belonged to.
When the shootout was over, nine
people were dead and 18 wounded.
About 50 weapons were confiscated, mostly knives and firearms,
and Swanton said more than 100
weapons may be found once authorities are done analyzing the crime
scene at the Twin Peaks restaurant,
which is part of a national chain
that features waitresses in revealing
uniforms.
Preliminary autopsy results
showed all nine of the dead were
killed by gunshots. Many were hit
in the head, neck, chest or torso.
Most of the men were in their 40s,
but they ranged in age from 27 to

65, according to reports released by
a McLennan County justice of the
peace.
Police have acknowledged firing
on armed bikers, but it was unclear
how many of the dead were shot by
gang members and how many were
shot by officers.
Of the injured, seven remain
hospitalized. Swanton, who has
been virtually the sole source of law
enforcement information on the fight,
described their conditions as stable.
He said the investigation is being
hampered by witnesses who “are
not being honest with us.”
Police are concerned that the
brawl will invite retaliation and
more violence, Swanton said.
“We would encourage them to
try to be a little peaceful and let the
bloodshed stop,” he said.
Authorities warned weeks ago of
growing animosity between rival
motorcycle gangs, a feud that erupted into violence at the restaurant,
which had drawn a large lunchtime
crowd to a busy Waco shopping
complex along Interstate 35.
In a memo dated May 1, the
Texas Department of Public Safety
cautioned authorities about increasing violence between the Bandidos
and the Cossacks, Dallas TV station
WFAA reported Monday.
McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara has said all nine of
those killed were part of those two
groups. About 170 bikers have been
charged with engaging in organized
crime. Swanton said more arrests
are likely.

McLennan County Justice of
the Peace W.H. Peterson set bond
at $1 million for each suspect. He
defended the high amount, citing
the violence that quickly unfolded
in a shopping market busy with a
lunchtime crowd.
The DPS Joint Information Center bulletin said the tension could
stem from Cossacks refusing to
pay Bandidos dues for operating
in Texas and for wearing a patch
on their vest that claimed Texas
as their turf without the Bandidos’
approval.
“Traditionally, the Bandidos have
been the dominant motorcycle
club in Texas, and no other club is
allowed to wear the Texas bar without their consent,” the bulletin said,
according to WFAA.
The bulletin said the FBI had
received information that the Bandidos had discussed “going to war
with Cossacks.” It also outlined
several recent incidents between the
two groups, including one instance
in March when about 10 Cossacks
forced a Bandido to pull over
along Interstate 35 near Waco and
attacked him with “chains, batons
and metal pipes before stealing his
motorcycle,” WFAA reported.
That same day, a group of Bandidos confronted a Cossack member
fueling up at a truck stop in Palo
Pinto County, west of Fort Worth,
the bulletin said. When the Cossack member refused to remove
the Texas patch from his vest, the
Bandidos hit him in the head with a
hammer and stole it.

The fall of Ramadi has prompted some to question the viability
of the Obama administration’s
approach in Iraq, which is a blend
of retraining and rebuilding the
Iraqi army, prodding Baghdad to
reconcile with the nation’s Sunnis,
and bombing Islamic State targets
from the air without committing
American ground combat troops.
“The president’s plan isn’t working. It’s time for him to come up
with overarching strategy to defeat
the ongoing terrorist threat,”
House Speaker John Boehner said.
White House spokesman Josh
Earnest said President Barack
Obama has always been open to
suggestions for improving the

U.S. approach in Iraq.
“It’s something that he’s talking
about with his national security
team just about every day, including today,” Earnest said.
Derek Harvey, a retired Army
colonel and former Defense Intelligence Agency officer who served
multiple tours in Iraq, says that
while the extremist group has
many problems and weaknesses,
it is “not losing” in the face of ineffective Sunni Arab opposition.
“They are adaptive and they
remain well armed and well
resourced,” Harvey said of the militants. “The different lines of operation by the U.S. coalition remain
disjointed, poorly resourced and

lack an effective operational framework, in my view.”
One alternative for the Obama
administration would be a containment strategy — trying to fence
in the conflict rather than push the
Islamic State group out of Iraq. That
might include a combination of
airstrikes and U.S. special operations
raids to limit the group’s reach. In
fact, a Delta Force raid in Syria on
Friday killed an IS leader known as
Abu Sayyaf who U.S. officials said
oversaw the group’s oil and gas operations, a major source of funding.
Officials have said containment might become an option
but is not under active discussion now.

Takata air bag recall
doubles to nearly 34 million
By Marcy Gordon

WASHINGTON —
Under pressure from
U.S. safety regulators,
Takata Corp. has agreed
to declare 33.8 million air
bags defective, a move
that will double the number of cars and trucks
included in what is now
the largest auto recall in
U.S. history.
The chemical that
inflates the air bags can
explode with too much
force, blowing apart a
metal inflator and sending shrapnel into the
passenger compartment.
The faulty inflators are
responsible for six deaths
and more than 100 injuries worldwide.
The agreement adds
more than 10 million air
bags to existing recalls,
covering both the passenger and driver’s side.

Takata and 11 automakers that use its air bags,
including Honda Motor
Co. and Toyota Motor
Corp., will have to sort
out which vehicles are
covered by the expanded
recalls. NHTSA said the
number of affected air
bags could climb.
Prior to Tuesday,
automakers had recalled
36 million vehicles
worldwide because of the
problem.
Before Takata, the largest recall in U.S. history
was in 1980 when Ford
Motor Co. had to fix 21
million cars and trucks
with automatic transmissions that could slip
into reverse. The Takata
recall dwarfs last year’s
highly publicized recall
of 2.6 million General
Motors small cars for
defective ignition switches and Toyota’s recalls
of 10 million vehicles
for problems with unintended acceleration.

ATHENS, Ohio – A
not-so-instant classic.
The seventh-seeded
Meigs baseball team gutted out a 3-2 victory in
12 innings over fourthseeded Sheridan Monday
night in the Division II
district semifinal at Ohio
University’s Bob Wren
Stadium.
“These kids have really
grown a lot this year, I’m
really proud of them for
their effort,” fifth year
Meigs head coach Brent
Bissell said. “Sheridan’s a
great ball team, but we’re
still hanging.”
The Generals (18-11),
who were held hitless
through the first four
frames, managed to cross
the plate first as Ross
Holbrook doubled home
Trevor Davisson with
one-out in the bottom of
the fifth inning.
The Marauders (16-7),
who have now won 10
straight games, answered
the bell in the top of the
sixth inning as sophomore Cody Bartrum
doubled with one out and
then scored on a two-out
Luke Musser single.
Neither team advanced
a runner in scoring
position again until the
top of the 10th inning,
when Meigs loaded the
bases on an error and
two walks. Sheridan
sophomore southpaw
Dylan Dupler, who tossed
north of 160 pitches in
the game, escaped the
jam unscathed to give the
Generals a chance in the
bottom of the frame.
Sheridan managed
one base runner in the
bottom of the 10th, but
he was picked off of
first base and the teams
prepared for their fourth
extra inning.
Marauders senior
Cameron Mattox singled
to begin the 11th and he
moved to second when
Zach Helton drew a walk.
Both runners moved into
scoring position with on
a sac-bunt by Tyler Williams, but a flyball to the
second baseman made
the second out of the
inning. Cameron Mattox
attempted to score from
third on a passed ball, but
Sheridan relief pitcher
Colton Abram tagged the
MHS senior out at the
plate to keep the score
tied at one.
After retiring the Generals in order in the bottom of the 11th, Meigs
senior Ray Johnson
singled to begin the 12th
frame. Johnson moved

Meigs sophomore Cody Bartrum (11) is greeted by senior Cameron Mattox, after scoring in the 12th
inning to give the Marauders a 3-1 lead. MHS held on for a 3-2 victory in the district semifinal at Bob
Wren Stadium, in Athens on Monday.

into scoring position after
a Sheridan failed to get
an out on a Chase Whitlatch grounder.
Bartrum then singled
to the outfield, allowing
Johnson to score and
give Meigs a 2-1 lead.
Whitlatch was thrown out
at third base on a fielder
choice, but Musser singled down the first base
line, allowing Bartrum
to score. Sheridan got
back-to-back groundouts
to give keep the deficit at
two headed into the bottom of the inning.
Sheridan’s Andrew
Paxton drew a base on
balls to begin the home
half of the 12th and he
advanced to third position on Meigs’ first error
of the game. A flyout to
the third baseman gave
Sheridan one out with
two runners in scoring
position, and the Generals loaded the bases
when Paxton was able to
slide back into third on a
fielder’s choice.
SHS catcher Austin
Sode pulled the Generals within one run with a
groundout to the second
baseman, which plated
Paxton. With two outs
and two runners in scoring position, Meigs freshman Christian Mattox
fielded a groundball back
to the mound and threw
to first base, clinching
the 3-2 victory for the

Maroon and Gold.
Christian Mattox
struck out three batters in four innings and
earned the victory in
relief, allowing one run
on two walks. Whitlatch,
who started the game
for Meigs, struck out 11
batters, walked three, and
allowed one run on three
hits in eight innings of
work.
“Christian Mattox,
being put in that situation
as a freshman shows how
tough that kid is,” Bissell
said. “I’m proud of both
our pitchers, they gutted
it out tonight and we live
to fight another day.”
Abram suffered the loss
for the Red and White
after surrendering two
runs on four hits and
a walk in two innings.
Dylan Dupler pitched the
first 10 frames for the
Generals and he struck
out 13, walked four, hit
two, and allowed one run
on five hits.
Musser, a sophomore,
led Meigs with four
singles and two runs batted in, while Bartrum
added a double, a single,
two runs scored and an
RBI. Johnson singled
and scored once, Tyler
Williams and Cameron
Mattox both singled once,
while Whitlatch stole a
base in the win.
Holbrook doubled and
drove in a run for SHS,

while Sode singled and
added an RBI. Davisson
singled once and scored
once, Paxton scored once,
while Mike Gettings stole
a base in the setback.
The Marauders had just
one error in the game,
while Sheridan had three
defensive mishaps. Meigs
left 13 runners on base in
the win, including eight
in scoring position. The
Generals stranded six
runners on base, five of
which were in scoring
position.
“Tonight our guys
could have very easily
laid down, because we
had so many chances to
score runs,” Bissell said.
“They didn’t carry it out
on the field, which usually is what a lot of young
kids do, and I’m really
proud of these guys.”
Meigs will face topseeded Minford in
Wednesday’s district final
at Bob Wren Stadium.
The Falcons are 19-2 and
defeated Logan Elm by
an 8-3 count on Monday.
This will be the Marauders first district final
appearance since 1997
and the Maroon and Gold
will try to win its first
district title since 1996.
The Marauders are now
4-0 in Athens County this
season.

Hawks’ 2-headed point guard a big key Man who
ATLANTA (AP) — Jeff Teague
leads the Atlanta offense.
So does Dennis Schroder.
Sometimes, they do it together.
The point guard tandem is a big
reason the Hawks have reached
the Eastern Conference final for
the first time in franchise history.
Top-seeded Atlanta hosts LeBron
James and the Cleveland Cavaliers
in Game 1 on Wednesday night.
“It doesn’t matter if I’ve got the
ball or Jeff’s got the ball,” Schroder
said. “We make the game fast.”
Teague has blossomed in coach
Mike Budenholzer’s offense, making the All-Star team for the first
time this season. Schroder’s progress has been even more remarkable, the 21-year-old German going
from a little-used rookie to a major
contributor in his second season.
In the playoffs, the Hawks have
looked for more ways to get Teague
and Schroder on the court at the
same time, giving the team more
offensive options at a time when
defenses are really clamping down.
Schroder is averaging nearly 20
minutes a game, essentially the
same as the regular season, but
Teague’s playing average has gone
up nearly 2 minutes — a sign of
Budenholzer using them more as a
package deal.

While using two small guards
— Teague is 6-foot-2, Schroder 6-1
— gives the Hawks some problems
at the defensive end, the coach is
more than willing to take the risk
giving what it means to the offense.
“When those two guys play
together, it gives you a second
player that’s very comfortable,
very accustomed, to being in pickand-rolls with the ball in their
hands — trying to get in the paint,
attacking the basket, collapsing the
defense,” Budenholzer said after
Monday’s practice at Philips Arena.
“If it’s helping us, we’ll continue to
play them together. I think they’re
getting more comfortable together,
too, which is helpful.”
While it’s impossible to key on
any player in Atlanta’s no-star
approach, the Cavaliers will be
focused on shutting down the two
guys who usually have the ball in
their hands.
“Both can break you down on the
dribble,” Cleveland coach David
Blatt said. “Both can push the ball.
Both can get to the rim and create
for not only themselves, but for others. They are a handful. Two excellent guards who can play together.
That presents another whole set of
problems.”
James said it really doesn’t matter

CLEVELAND (AP) — A man who once conned the
National Hockey League into thinking he was a wealthy
entrepreneur well-qualified to buy one of the league’s most
storied franchises has been convicted of another scam.
John Spano Jr. pleaded guilty Monday to 16 counts of
forgery for what authorities say was a scheme that saw
him collect nearly $70,000 in sales commissions on fraudulent accounts he created. The 50-year-old Spano faces
as many as 16 years in prison when sentenced in a Lake
County courtroom next month. He remains free on bond.
His attorney did not return telephone messages seeking
comment Tuesday.
Spano, who lives with his parents in Grand River, a village about 30 miles east of Cleveland, became infamous
after he agreed to buy the New York Islanders in 1996
for $165 million. The NHL vetted Spano, who presented
himself as a Texas businessman worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and approved the sale. He convinced
banks to lend him $80 million for the purchase. But
months after being hailed as a hero by Islanders fans, his
con was revealed when he failed to pay a relatively modest down payment of $5 million.
The FBI launched an investigation, and Spano pleaded
guilty to fraud and theft charges in federal court in New
York. He was sentenced to nearly six years in prison and
was ordered to pay $11.9 million in restitution to the
Islanders and victims of other scams, including $1.25 million to hockey great Mario Lemieux.

who’s at the point for the Hawks.
They’re always looking to run.
“They have guys that push the
tempo, starting with Teague and
then Schroeder does not let the
tempo go down when he comes
in,” James said. “We have to understand that, we have to be very
aware of that, and match that.”
Teague, the 19th overall pick by
the Hawks in 2009, didn’t make an
impact right away. Playing his rookie season under Mike Woodson,
then three years with Larry Drew
as coach, the guard struggled for
consistency in offenses that were
stagnant and relied heavily on isolation plays. In fact, there was some
question about whether the Hawks
would — or even should — match
a four-year, $32 million offer sheet
that Teague got from Milwaukee in
2013.
Atlanta decided to keep Teague,
and it turned out to be a wise move
when Budenholzer came aboard as
coach. No longer would the Hawks
be content just standing around,
waiting for Joe Johnson or someone
else to score. The new coach wanted
a point guard who wouldn’t be timid
about darting into the lane, who
would get everyone involved in the
offense off pick-and-rolls, screens
and cutting to the basket.

Allbright competes at state tennis tournament

Point Pleasant’s Kelsey Allbright
wrapped up a stellar senior
season by competing in the 2015
WVSSAC Class AAA state tennis
tournament held last Thursday
at the Schoenbaum Courts in
Kanawha City, W.Va. Allbright
— who was competing in No. 2
singles — put up a valiant fight,
but was ultimately eliminated
from the tournament after
dropping a 9-7 decision to Jill
Johns of George Washington.
Allbright, who was also an allstate golfer this past fall, became
the first Lady Knight to advance
to the state tennis tournament
since the duo of Taylor Somerville
and Claire Cottrill made it to the
Class AA-A meet back in 2011.

Patriots won’t appeal team’s fine, draft penalties
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) —
Now that Patriots owner Robert
Kraft is not appealing his team’s
punishments in the deflated footballs scandal, only his quarterback’s challenge remains.
Moments after Kraft said
Tuesday he won’t oppose the $1
million fine and loss of two draft
choices the NFL penalized the
team for its role in using underinflated footballs in the AFC championship game, the players’ union
reasserted that Tom Brady’s
appeal will go forward.
Brady, the MVP of February’s Super Bowl and one of
the league’s biggest stars, has
been suspended for the first four
games of the 2015 season by the
NFL.
So while Kraft sought to end
the “dialogue and rhetoric,” it’s
certain “Deflategate” won’t disappear anytime soon.
At the owners meetings, Kraft
said he was putting the league
before his franchise because “at
no time should the agenda of
one team outweigh the collective
good of the 32.”
The Patriots will lose a first-

round draft pick next year and a
fourth-rounder in 2017.
“When the discipline camea
out, I felt it was way over the
top,” Kraft said, adding that if he
had made his decision last week,
“I think maybe it might have been
a different one.”
But after further consideration,
he cited “believing in the strength
of the (NFL) partnership and
the 32 teams” for dropping any
appeal plans.
Kraft also recognized the powers given to Commissioner Roger
Goodell.
“Although I might disagree in
what is decided, I do have respect
for the commissioner, and believe
he is doing what he perceives to
be in the best interest of the 32,”
Kraft added.
Kraft would not take any questions Tuesday about his decision
nor about Brady’s appeal, which
will be heard by Goodell. But he
has said he’s convinced Brady
played no part in deflating the
footballs.
Brady’s appeal will be heard
within the next week. On Tuesday, the union formally requested

that Goodell recuse himself from
serving as arbitrator, saying he
is not impartial and that he is a
“central witness in the appeal.”
An NFL spokesman said the
league would have no comment.
Kraft was livid when the Wells
Report, which was commissioned
by the NFL and took nearly four
months to compile, contained
what he termed “all circumstantial, no hard evidence.” He said
Tuesday that “the entire process
has taken too long; it’s four
months after the AFC championship game, and we are still talking
about air pressure … in footballs.”
This is the second time in
Kraft’s 21 years as owner that the
Patriots have been disciplined for
breaking NFL rules. In 2007, they
were penalized for videotaping
New York Jets signals during a
game. They didn’t challenge fines
of $500,000 against coach Bill
Belichick and $250,000 against
the club, along with the loss of a
first-round draft pick.
Kraft has long been a confidant
and adviser to Goodell and was
one of the owners who championed Goodell to replace Paul

Tagliabue in 2006. Kraft also was
one of the leaders in getting key
owners and the union together
to end the 2011 lockout, and he’s
been a major force in negotiations
with TV networks.
In other words, a team player,
something he stressed in his
short news conference Tuesday.
“What I’ve learned over the last
21 years is the heart and soul and
strength of the NFL,” he said, “is
the partnership of 32 teams.”
Outside the Ritz-Carlton,
Chase Bender, a 21-year-old
senior at Cal-Berkeley who identified himself as a football fan,
made his own statement. He had
a pile of deflated footballs and
a bag full of more, along with a
Patriots helmet.
Bender began sitting outside
the hotel around 10 a.m. with
hopes of having a word with
Kraft, or at least get him to sign
the helmet.
“I don’t really think they cheated,” he said. “If they did, just say
sorry and that you know it was
wrong, accept your penalty and
get on with it.”
