FEW days ago, a group of Young
Americans departed New York for
Europe, the vanguard of many more who
will take part this ye ar in something call·
ed "Experiment tn International Living"
By the end of 1964, some 2,300 Am·
erican college and high school students,
teachers a~d others will have visited 40
countries around lhe world , and 2,700
counterparts from 85 countries will
have come to America .
At the same time. exchanges between
countnes other than the United States
will involve hundreds, more students. All
told, 29.000 people on six continents are
involved annually in the program
The word ·•experiment" is somewhat
of a misnomerr for the little-publicized
Experiment in International Living has
been sending young people abroad since
1932. when it was founded by Dr Don·
aid B. Wa tt (now retired ) as a nonprofit
organi2abon devoted to international,
cross-cultural understanding.
For the exchangees. though, it is trulv an experiment:·- an opportunity to
live, for a few week:;.or months. In a typ·
ical household in a foreign land as a
member of a native family .
An early "Fperimenter" was Sargent
Shriver, director of the ll S. Peace
Corps, who lived with a German family

'

..

corps volunteers.
With U. S. and International

head·
quarters in Putney, Vt., the Experiment
is involved in a growing number of programs besides its own exchanges.
It works closely with American and
foreign universities, the Stale Depart·
men! and numerous public and pnvate
groups, both here and abroad, where its
three decades of experience in internationa! people·to-people co-operation are
invaluable.
"The Experiment in International
Livin,," says President Boyce, "was the
first institution of its type to use the
home as a classroom - as a laboratory
- in fostering international understand·
ing"
The measure of its succe.. ts shown
not only by its growth in America but by
,the facl that it has beeq.adopted by so
