ly DOROTHY KllGALUN

·· Speaking for myself: When the news
flf Pandit Nehru's death reached New
York, I found myself thinking of tbe sun·
ny Sunday ill Hyde Park when I met him
at lunch at Mn. Frantlln D. Roosevelt's
bonae. He wu a most attractive man,
'llitb a be~utlful voice, fascinating !ace,
,trong lovely hands and penetrating eyes.
After lunch, we all went into Mrs.
Roosevelt's Jiving room, the younger
onea of us sat on the floor because there
l"tre not enough chairs for everyone,
and Eleanor Roosevelt, ill her character·
,lsjlcally - almost naively - charming
JnY, conducted an interview with the
euest of honor. She addressed Nehru as
"Mr. Prime Minister," and beginning her
remuks with "I think we would all like
to know," drew him out like an expert
·r•porter.
He responded brilliantly, talking flu·
ently on many subjects of international
~cope, appearing to enjoy the opportun·
)ty of alrlng his views to ~~ small. ~nd
private audience of conflicting pobttcal
persuasions. He was a smooth and smart
operator who knew what he was doing at
,aU times, and it was a pleasure to wat.ch
him in action. whether you agreed wtth
him or didn't.

·. It would be Interesting to know if
Sen. BlffY Goldwater, who has been de·
scribed to me as a brilliant and charm·
ing man. is aware of the number of illil·
erates who are devoting their lives to
campaigning in his behalf. This desk has
received all kinds of double-negative
prodding to please help the great cause.
and since many of the letters are unsigned. I don't see them-1 don~ have any
tlme for or Interest in anonymous mail
-but my secretary gives me a report on
.the campaigning occasionally, and shows
me l few copies of the letters. I can only
l!lil' that II the senders can get past t~e
poll-watchers and vote, we're all ID
.trouble.
· What th•y ••em to he saylnt in their

dent, using the power of the press (big
laugh from the audience), but tbey are
refraining from sillniDg tbeir nlllllel beeluse they don't wlllt any resultlq trouble from the govermnent.
It Ia all right, of course, If I get In
trouble wltb the eovernment, under my
name.
Sorry, fellows. Try somebody else.
Perbal's your local Republican leader.
Tell him bow to run the country. Send
him money for Barry. I can't btlp you.
I'm not a true believer In the catlle. I'm
not even sure I know what It ia.

I am a big fan of pianos, v!ou'ns,
trumpet's and saxophones, but I will nev·

er come to love banjos or harmonicas, I
don't feel very enthusiastic about electrl·
fled guitars, either, althoueb I adore the
original "unimproved" type .. . If I were
running the Army, I could think of ..,mething for Cassius Clay to do. There's al·
ways a car or a jeep to drive, Isn't there!
A gate to be patrolled! You don't have to
be any Nobel prize winner to do tb1t
kind of job. What about pbyalcal fllneu?
Couldn't the greatest champion of them
all teach fellows bow to lklp rope 111d do
other gymnasium tricks! Maybe he can
click a camera or clean up a bm1cks.
Or merely entertain the troopa by put·
ling on boxing matches lq IBolated apotl
where the fellows have v~ry Htt!e to fill
their leisure hours. Reading and writlne
aren't important in those posts. It's 1 Ju.
dicrous - but nonetheless disgracefulnational scandal that gentle eompoaera,
writers. musicians and soclolo£Y lludenta
are grabbed by the armed foree.s to type,
cook or operate tanka, but a fellow whose
lucrative profession consists In lmocldng
another guy unconstious Isn't In any way
useful to the generals. President JohDSOn
seems to want to encourage the young
people of America to study bard and use
their intelligence. But the Cassius Clay
situation put~ a valuable premium on
dumbness. Flunk the tests conv!Dclngly
and you're free to bomb around having 1
ball, and forget all that ma~hinJjazz.
