The National Foundation-March of
Dlmea entered this field 1n 19118. Today
tbe voluntary health organization supports more than 44 birth defects treat•
ment and study centers throughout the
nation. Ohio has such centers in Cincinnati Columbus; and Cleveland. These
centers receive their support by virtue
of grants from most o( the National
Foundation Chapters in Ohio. The aggregate amount of these grants Is $115,700.
In addition to the human tragedies
caused by many defect.tve conditions, a
sin~le victim who must be lnsUtutlonal·
ized. yet who lives a normal life spanas mimy do - may cost bis family or
the staie as much as a half million dollars over the years, the spokesman pointed out.
Mr. Saker also noted that past support
of the Marc h of Dimes has returned
health benefits worth 17 times the total
amount contributed to the voluntary
