COMMENT~ liNG EDITORIALLY

Student Behavior
1\{ANY of us have a tendency to jump

to conclusions when misdeeds transpire, and many times the first comment

you hear is that some htgh school stud·
ents did this or that. We are pleased to
note that a recent survey has disproved
these loose statements. and to a great dearee the secondary students Of OUr I)OUO·
try have been vindicated. Thts year WI
have noted the fine behavior and respon·
1ibillty of high school students m our
community, and they have been lauded
bv their administrators for thetr h1gh
degree of responsible behavior. '!'he sur·
vey we recently read was undertaken
wtien a report from the Federal Bureau
of Investigation stated that a third of all
crimes In this country involve JUverules,
and the 1urvey by the National . Educa·
lion Association proves that dehnquen·
cy does not reach this level in secondary
achoola.
The ••rvoy shows that only tbret
student& in tho nations high schools out
of 100 could be considered serious trou-.
ble m;o:ero. One out of three teachers reported that they had no real troublemak·
on in their classes. Teachers rated e1ght
out of 10 classes as ucellent or good,
and only five out of 100 as poor. Nearly
all duses of above average student abtl·
tty were rated good or ucellent, but lesa
than half of the below average ability
clalle& were <OoSidered well-behaved.
Onlr 14 out of 1,000 teachers re~rted
hav1n1 acta of violence commttted
atainat them personally. It Is interestint
to note that physical violence was com·
milted more frequently in the very large
achool systems than In the smaller ones.
We can be thankful for that situation lo·
cally and it is indicative of the delinquent
rate over the country. In a small commu·
nlty where most everyone is known per·
•onally has a deterent effect on the com·

miision of most acts of VIOlence.
The student behav ior that often
breaks out in strikes ""d boycotts. and
other types of demonstrations are found
frequently in the larger school systems.
Fewer than four teachers out of 100 re·
ported incidents of this kind The nine
types o! student misbehavior ~ange from
lack of respon si billty to carrymg danger·

ous weapons. Fewer than one out of ten
te•chers reported any fighting, serious
theft or the carrying of dangerous wea·
~ ~ns . Those
... ~en able to

things as far as we have

observe are <'.Ompletely nonexistent lorallv. The blame lor most of
the delinquenCy t-hat does exist was nam-

ed hv one out of three teachers as
squarely on the shoulders of irresponsi·
ble parents, to low mcome and broken
families. and the lark of moral and spir·
itual traming.
Another mteresting facet of the survev was that 28 percent of those ques·
tioncd on the problem reported that increased availability of automobiles to
teen·agers was a major cause of juvenIle misbehavior in cla1s. and they soft
peddled the idea that porno~raphic lit·
erature, radio, or TV, or motion picture

violence was a great contributing factor
to behavior problems in high schools.
The students themselves are one of the
big determining factors . Just the other
day there was a potentially dangerous
situation, when a white boy stabbed and
killed a member of another race. There
was a young man who stepped into ihe
picture, and by his sole efforts averted
what could have been a dangerous dem·

onstration. There are many such brave
and resourceful students in any high
school, who by precept and example can
to a large extent help to direct student

attion in the right wa:vs of law and nrder. If student• will only realize it they
can by their behavior create a good image of their school, and when they real·
ue the fact that anv act that is of a delinquent nature they are bringing discredit
to their school thev will think twice ab·
out lowering themselves along with their
classmates. What we see locally i1 on a
high plane. which we hope will contin·

ue.-
