Honoring our veterans
Dear Editor,
Gene Armstrong, United States Army, Marvin
Skaggs, United States Army, and Lana Hudson,
United States Navy and United States Coast
Guard, were recognized as the Veterans of the
Month. These men and women were birthed into
families who would serve the Armed Forces of the
United States of America and families that carry
the good news, we are grateful for these families.
It is evident that Gene Armstrong, Marvin
Skaggs, and Lana Hudson, are helping to make
our families strong and helping to maintain freedom, demonstrating fitness skills — you can see
them walking scheduling camp, and vacation Bible
schools for the community. You can also see them
around the courthouse having prayer on world
Prayer Day, providing educational facilities and
camps for our communities, encouraging everyone
to hold fast to their faith in God and our constitution to the highest level. We are proud of them for
serving in the United States Armed Forces. We are
most proud of them for the things they do in Gallia County. Just give them a thank you when you
see them, let them know that you stand with them.
Each will receive a plaque for their Community
Services in Gallia County and their names will be
submitted to the Jim Marshall Veteran of the Year
award.
Please submit your nominations for the veteran
of the month award by calling 740-208-5024.

TODAY IN HISTORY
The Associated Press

Today is Tuesday, June 26, the 177th day of
2018. There are 188 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History
On June 26, 1948, the Berlin Airlift began in earnest after the Soviet Union cut off land and water
routes to the isolated western sector of Berlin.
On this date
In 1483, Richard III began his reign as King of
England (he was crowned the following month
at Westminster Abbey).
In 1541, Francisco Pizarro, Spanish conqueror
of Peru, was slain in Lima by rival conquistadors.
In 1870, the first section of Atlantic City, New
Jersey’s Boardwalk was opened to the public.
In 1917, the first troops of the American
Expeditionary Force deployed to France during
World War I landed in St. Nazaire.
In 1925, Charles Chaplin’s classic comedy
“The Gold Rush” premiered at Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.
In 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was
nominated for a second term of office by delegates to the Democratic national convention in
Philadelphia.
In 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower
joined Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in ceremonies officially opening the St. Lawrence Seaway.
Swedish boxer Ingemar Johansson knocked
out Floyd Patterson in the third round of their
match at New York’s Yankee Stadium to win the
heavyweight title.
In 1963, President John F. Kennedy visited
West Berlin, where he delivered his famous
speech expressing solidarity with the city’s residents, declaring: “Ich bin ein Berliner” (I am a
Berliner).
In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson
announced his choice of Abe Fortas to succeed
the retiring Earl Warren as chief justice of the
United States (however, Fortas later withdrew
in the face of stiff Senate opposition).
In 1977, 42 people were killed when a fire
sent toxic smoke pouring through the Maury
County Jail in Columbia, Tennessee. Elvis Presley performed his last concert at Market Square
Arena in Indianapolis.
In 1988, three people were killed when a new
Airbus A320 jetliner carrying more than 130
people crashed into a forest during a demonstration at an air show in Mulhouse (muh-LOOZ’),
France.
In 1993, President Bill Clinton announced the
U.S. had launched missiles against Iraqi targets
because of “compelling evidence” Iraq had plotted to assassinate former President George H.W.
Bush.
Ten years ago: The U.S. Supreme Court
struck down a handgun ban in the District of
Columbia as it affirmed, 5-4, that an individual
right to gun ownership existed. Juan Alvarez,
who triggered a 2005 rail disaster in Glendale,
California, by parking a sport-utility vehicle on
the tracks, was convicted of 11 counts of firstdegree murder. (Alvarez was later sentenced to
11 consecutive life terms.)

How to know your angel is near
The sound of Heaven
may be just a whisper
away, but how do you
know your angels and
guides are near if you
don’t see or hear them
like you do a human or
your trusty smartphone
app? Same way you
know the sun helped the
lilac bush to bloom —
you see it blooming and
know that if you place
the flowering shrub in
the shade, it would shrivel and decay.
How do you know the
plant would die? Most
likely you learned how
to grow plants by watching your elders do it,
by reading tips, or by
simply doing it yourself
through trial and error.
Similarly, we can learn to
connect with our guides
by practicing the most
common suggestion from
those most experienced
— meditate or pray.
There are many ways to
accomplish this, but basically this means clearing
your mind for a period
and remaining open to
receive the ideas and
images that come.
Some see angels as a
physical manifestation,
but some do not. Seeing
angels doesn’t require

vision. Angels and other

your open heart. The
ride is enjoyable when
you trust the guide.

THEIR VIEW

This is what America should stand for
On Wednesday, President
Trump signed an executive order
to halt an abominable practice
that never should have been
implemented and announced the
administration will stop separating
parents and children at the border.
As the images poured out from
the border and the truth of what
was happening there became
known, our nation was presented
with a choice. We can be a country that does what is right and
protects children, regardless of

where they’re born. Or, we can be
a nation that rips children away
from their families and uses them
as human shields or negotiating
chips. We cannot be both.
Everyone in this country
now, except those 100 percent
descended from Native Americans, has immigrant blood in his
or her veins. We all come from
immigrants, and many here today
are second- or third-generation
Americans who knew relatives that
immigrated here. Everyone wants

to believe their ancestors came
to this country legally and while
many did, others, desperate for
a new, better life, did what those
at the southern border are doing
now.
What children along the border
endured was wrong and will long
be a stain on America. We came
perilously close to becoming a
nation that no longer wants to do
right by children — and we should
have zero tolerance for that.

Truex easily held off Harvick for his
second win in three weeks and his third
victory of the season in his Furniture Row

“The last 10 laps of the race were easy,”
Truex said. “A little stressful. I was just

MOSCOW (AP) —
Lionel Messi, arguably
the greatest soccer player
in history, has had a
miserable World Cup
and must turn it around
immediately to save
Argentina from a humiliating early exit from the
tournament.
Messi leads Argentina
into a must-win Tuesday
game against Nigeria at
St. Petersburg Stadium,
where the African team
would advance out of
Group D with a victory.
The South Americans
are winless at the World
Cup, Messi has yet to
score a goal, and a victory against Nigeria won’t
guarantee a spot in the
round of 16. Argentina
must win, and get help
from Croatia, which has
already advanced.
Croatia has no pressure in its match against
Iceland, which must win
its final Group D game
in Rostov-on-Don to
advance. If Iceland wins,
Argentina is out and Messi’s international career
might be over.
Messi turned 31 two
days before the match,
and there’s strong speculation he’ll retire from the
national team if Argentina loses.
“That will be our main
goal, to make it Messi’s
last World Cup game,”
Nigeria defender Bryan
Idowu said. “As much
as we enjoy watching
Messi play, it’s against us.
There’s only one option
for us, (which) is that he
plays his last game in St.
Petersburg.”
Argentina fans have
been livid over the
performances of the
national team in this
tournament, with much
of the wrath directed at
Messi. Although Nigeria
coach Gernot Rohr is a
fan of the five-time world
player of the year, he has
no sympathy for Messi’s
plight Tuesday.
“Everybody loves him,”
Rohr said. “But in football
there is no mercy, there is
no pity. Everyone wants
to win and no one can
make any gifts, even if we
like him so much.”
Messi, whose 64
career goals for Argentina, missed a penalty
in Argentina’s opening
match, a 1-1 draw with
Iceland. He also failed
to score in a 3-0 loss to
Croatia. It’s part of a disappointing international
run in which Messi’s only
medal with Argentina
came 10 years ago at the
Summer Olympics.
He didn’t score in the
1-0 loss to Germany in
the World Cup final four
years ago, and was on the
losing team in the Copa
America finals in 2007,
2015 and 2016.
The match will be the
fifth meeting between
Argentina and Nigeria
at the World Cup, and
Argentina has won the
last four. Messi scored
twice when Argentina
beat Nigeria 3-2 in the
group stage four years
ago.
Iceland, meanwhile, is
the nation with the smallest population ever to
qualify for a World Cup

What do early exits say about US soccer?
MOSCOW (AP) — Costa
Rica and Panama were overwhelmed at the World Cup,
both going two and out.
What does that say about
the United States, which didn’t
even make it to soccer’s showcase?
“It’s an extra twist of the
knife,” said former U.S. forward
Taylor Twellman, now ESPN’s
lead soccer analyst. “It’s another reminder that the failure to
qualify is an absolute debacle.”
Beaten 3-0 by Belgium in its
opener, Panama gave up five
goals in the first half Sunday
in a 6-1 loss to England. Costa
Rica was defeated 1-0 by Serbia
and 2-0 by Brazil.
Mexico is in good position
to advance to the round of 16
after victories over defending
champion Germany and South
Korea. While the North and
Central American and Caribbean region had three nations in
the knockout rounds four years
ago, this will be CONCACAF’s
first World Cup since 2006 with
fewer than two.
“Mexico is a good, solid
team. So is Costa Rica.
Panama is an inferior team in
the competition,” former U.S.
coach Bruce Arena said. “I feel
strongly that we should have
been the third team, but we
have no one to blame but ourselves.”
The U.S. qualified for seven
straight World Cups and
advanced to the knockout
round four times during that
streak before missing this
year’s tournament.
Costa Rica defeated the U.S.
twice in qualifying, a 4-0 home
rout in November 2016 that
caused the U.S. Soccer Federation to fire coach Jurgen Klinsmann and bring back Arena,
and a 2-0 win in New Jersey
last September.
Panama rallied with a late
first-half goal to tie the U.S. at
home in March 2017, and the

Panama’s Michael Murillo kneels on the pitch following his team’s 6-1 loss Sunday to England in their group G match at the
2018 soccer World Cup at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in Nizhny Novgorod.

Americans won 4-0 in Florida
last October. The U.S. then lost
2-1 at Trinidad and Tobago,
when only a tie was needed to
qualify. The Americans finished
fifth in the six-nation final
round, falling below Honduras,
which lost a playoff to Australia.
“If the United States had
qualified, we would have
done much better than Costa
Rica and Panama,” said Steve
Sampson, the U.S. coach from
1995-98. “I know that Panama
finished ahead of the United
States in the qualification
phase, but with all the previous
experience the United States
would have, I’ve got to believe
and I do believe that they
would have done much better
than Costa Rica and Panama in
this World Cup.”
Former U.S. goalkeeper
Kasey Keller said the failure of
the U.S. to qualify for the 2012
and 2016 Olympics was a sign
of trouble to come.
“Our under-23s over an

eight-year, 10-year period have
not been as good as the rest of
CONCACAF, and that’s eventually going to filter up to your
national team, and it doesn’t
surprise me that we had this
struggle,” he said before adding: “Are we better than Panama? Of course we are.”
If Mexico moves on to the
knockout rounds, which is likely, 13 of 24 CONCACAF teams
(54 percent) will have reached
the round of 16 since 1990:
Mexico seven times, the U.S.
four and Costa Rica twice.
“I think we have a long way
to go,” CONCACAF President
Victor Montagliani said. “We
still rank behind only UEFA
on CONMEBOL in terms of
points per game in World Cups
historically, but obviously now
our fate in terms of a run is in
the hands of Mexico.”
Arena said poor officiating
in CONCACAF holds back the
region and cited Egyptian referee Gehad Grisha’s decisions
to award penalty kicks when

Fidel Escobar and Roman Torres knocked over Jesse Lingard,
and when Anibal Godoy wrestled Harry Kane to the ground.
That led to a pair of successful
spot kicks by Kane as England
built a 5-0 lead.
“The things that happened
today with Panama were typical of CONCACAF competition, but they’re never punished for it. In my view, the
officiating hurts the progress
of the region,” Arena said.
“You’d have to be hit over the
head with a sledgehammer for
them to call a penalty kick in
CONCACAF.”
Montagliani took Arena’s
criticism in stride.
“That’s a bit of hyperbole
from Bruce,” he said. “We’re
always trying to improve
refereeing. I think in this last
qualifying, it’s the best I’ve
seen it in a long time in CONCACAF. Obviously, spoken
like a true coach, Bruce has
always been griping about
referees.”

Truex tricks Harvick on track, conquers Sonoma
SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Martin
Truex Jr. was running second as the laps
dwindled in Sonoma, and crew chief Cole
Pearn didn’t think they were as fast as
Kevin Harvick.
Pearn told his team to prepare for a pit
stop on the 73rd lap, and he told Truex
over the radio to bring in the car.
It was all trickery.
Harvick’s crew chief, Rodney Childers,
called in his driver for tires and fuel in
anticipation of Truex’s stop — but Pearn’s

driver actually stayed out for seven more
laps. When Truex finally pitted, he got the
fresh tires he needed to blow past Harvick
for a sweet victory.
“I called him off at the last second,”
Pearn said with a sly smile. “As far as he
knew, we were pitting. I’d like to say we’re
smart enough to use codes, but we’re not.
We’d probably mess it up.”
Truex won the NASCAR Cup Series
race in Sonoma on Sunday because of
that clever pit bluff, cruising to his second

Planning debate continues
over riverfront concert venue

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — Undrafted free agent
fullback Ryan Yurachek has signed with the Oakland Raiders.
The team announced his addition Friday, and
Yurachek is likely to enter training camp as a backup on the depth chart.
Keith Smith is the projected starting fullback for
coach Jon Gruden’s team. Smith, who joins fullback
Jamize Olawale on the roster and is a converted
linebacker, played only sparingly on offense with
the Cowboys, but was an important part of the special teams under coordinator Rich Bisaccia, who
now holds the same job with the Raiders.
Last month, Yurachek signed with the Saints as
an undrafted free agent out of Marshall, but was
released last week.
Also Friday, Oakland waived fullback Henry
Poggi. He had signed in May.

CINCINNATI (AP) — The future of a proposed riverfront concert venue in Cincinnati
remains uncertain.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports City Council unanimously voted recently to approve the
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s music venue
at The Banks, but officials haven’t agreed on a
specific site for it.
Banks planner Tom Gabelman has proposed
building the venue near the Bengals stadium
which would require constructing a parking
garage underneath it.
The Bengals lease with Hamilton County gives
the team final say on projects at The Banks that
draw more than 3,000 people or are higher than
two stories. The team has suggested building the
venue at a site near the General Electric building.

had dreams of getting a
rare victory — until he
missed a shift and blew
his engine on the 33rd

key mistake. “I haven’t
missed a shift on a road
course in 10 years,”
Allmendinger said. “It
was just me. I was trying to be so patient and
so smooth. It was unexpected. It’s on me. I let

Damon Evans hired as
athletic director at Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — The University of
Maryland has hired Damon Evans to be its athletic
director, completing the transition that started in
October when Kevin Anderson took a six-month sabbatical from the post.
Evans joined the school in December 2014. He was
named acting athletic director when Anderson began
his sabbatical and maintained that job after Anderson
resigned in April.
Maryland launched a national search for a new AD
after Anderson resigned, but ended up staying close
to home with its final choice.
In a statement Monday, Maryland president Wallace Loh said, “The candidates invited for interviews
had impressive credentials and accomplishments. …
In Damon, the University? of Maryland? has the right
person at the right time.”
Over the past four years, Evans overhauled the athletics budget and financial operations, resulting in an
operating surplus, according to the school.

Watson shoots 63 to rally for 3rd Travelers title
CROMWELL, Conn.
(AP) — Bubba Watson
says TPC River Highlands feels like home. It
certainly was a comfortable place again this
week.
Watson overcame a
six-stroke deficit Sunday
to win his third Travelers Championship title,
shooting a 7-under 63
for a three-stroke victory.
The left-hander
became the first threetime winner on the
PGA Tour this season
and pulled within one
of Billy Casper’s tournament record of four
victories.
He finished at
17-under 263. Thirdround leader Paul
Casey, Stewart Cink,
Beau Hossler and J.B.
Holmes tied for second.
Casey shot 72, Cink 62,
Hossler 66 and Holmes
67.
Watson also came
from six back to win the
2010 event for his first
tour title and beat Casey
in a playoff in 2015.
“I feel like this is my
home course,” Watson
said. “As soon as they
put the schedule up, I
sign up for this. I want
to come back here. This
means so much, not
only from the golf side
of it, but from the family side. My dad, it was
the only time he got to
see me win (in 2010).
He got to see me qualify
for the Ryder Cup at
this event. So all these
things just mean so
much to my family.”
During the victory

ceremony, Watson’s
adopted children —
6-year-old son Caleb
and 3-year-old daughter
Dakota — received
small trophies of their
own.
Watson shot a 33 on
the front nine, but really
got it going on the back,
with five birdies. He
tied Casey at 16-under
par by getting up and
down from the bunker for a birdie on the
course’s signature 15th
hole.
Still tied on the par-4
18th, Watson hit his tee
shot 366 yards, then
pitched inside 3 feet,
giving caddie Ted Scott
a big high-five before
taking the lead with the
putt.
“Hitting some of those
shots, especially the
shot on 18, downwind,
it was very difficult, but
somehow pulling it off”
Watson said. “And that’s
what we all try to do on
Sundays is pull off the
amazing shot.”
Casey, who shot 65,
67 and 62 to lead the
field by four shots coming into Sunday, birdied
his opening hole. But
he gave that back on the
fifth and had back-toback bogeys on 16 and
17 to end any chance he
had of catching Watson.
The Englishman has
finished in the top 20
in eight of his last nine
tournaments. He was
second here during his
first visit in 2015, came
in 17th a year later and
had a fifth-place finish
in Cromwell a year ago.
“There was a lot of

fight in there,” Casey
said. “But, I fought my
golf swing all day as you
can see coming down
the last couple of holes.”
Watson also won at
Rivera in Los Angeles in
February and the World
Golf ChampionshipsMatch Play in Austin,
Texas, in March. He
earned $1.26 million for
his 12th career victory.
Cink tied the best
round of the week with
a 62 on Sunday. The
two-time Travelers
Champion came out
blazing, opening with
three straight birdies
and putting up a 29 on
the front nine. He was
7-under through 10 and
acknowledged thinking
about a sub-60 round
after making birdie on
the 15th.
“I knew that I needed
three birdies to shoot
59. But quickly, I also
remembered that the
golf tournament was on
the line and it would
mean a lot more to me
to win the Travelers
Championship than to
shoot a 59.”
He bogeyed 16, but
finished the round with
his 10th birdie.
Defending champion
Jordan Spieth, who was
tied for the lead after
the opening round,
shot a 69 to finish at
4 under. There hasn’t
been a repeat champion
in Cromwell since Phil
Mickelson in 2001 and
2002. Spieth said he
was originally planning
to take time off until he
defends his title at the
British Open, but may

re-evaluate that as he
works on his game.
U.S. Open champion
Brooks Koepka shot a
65 to tie for 19th at 9
under. He said his top
priority right now is
rest, but said that won’t
come until after he
attends a bachelor party
for his best friend next
week.
“I don’t feel like I need
to play; I feel like my
game is in a good spot,”
he said. “I played really
well this week, just
some stupid mistakes,
just mental errors.
That’s all it was, lack of
focus, low energy. To be
honest with you, I’m not
surprised.”
Qualifier Chase Seiffert shot a 63 on Monday just to make the
tournament. He shot
a 64 Sunday to finish
at 12 under and tie for
ninth.
Seiffert’s round
included an eagle at
the sixth hole that saw
him put second shot
301 yards over the
green, before holing
out from 49 feet away.
The 26-year-old former
Florida State star also
qualified last year and
tied for 43rd.
“I feel like my game’s
good enough to be out
here full-time and kind
of confirms that with
the way I’ve been playing this week and last
year here as well,” he
said.
Jason Day holed out
on 18 from 38 feet, just
in front of the greenside
bunker to finish at 69
and 11 under.
