The Schlesinger obstacle
By M!lrtba ADgle IIDd Robert Wallen

WASHINGTON (NEA) - Although President carter is
offering new initiatives to resolve the nation's energy
roblems; nothing has changed with the ' discredited
Cureaucracy that's responsible for adminislertnl the
'
While House program.
The Department of Energy (DOE) an{! its two highest
ranking officials Energy Secretary James R. Schlesinger
and Depulf. s.c{retary John F. O'Leary, have become
objects of .COm and derision in this capjtal.
Much of the contempt toward them unfortunately is
justified. Consider their performance d~g the m~l
recent energy crisis, the political instability m Iran dunng
the initial months of this year:
Item: Schlesinger repeatedly claimed \hal the temporary ceaaation of Iranian oil production during January
and February was producing a world petrolewn shortfall
of 2 mJIIIon barrels per day.
The most notable endorsement of that estimate came
from the multinational oil corporations, . which said the
figure actually was 21'.. million barrels daily.
But by late March, after Iran resumed oil exports, DOE
officials were privately circulating - and endorsmg Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) figures showing that
worldwide oil production actually increased during the
first two months of 1979.
According to the CIA estimates, total oil production rose
from ~7 .3 million barrels a day in 1978 to 60.1 mJIIIon
barrels a day this year.
Item: Schlesinger also repeatedly claimed that the halt
in Iranian exports produced a shortfall in the United Stales
amounting to 500,000 b8rrels a day and creeping toward
800,000 barrels a day.
But in late March, O'Leary told a House commit~ that
there actually 'hadn't been any Iranlan·induced on 'Shortage in this country. Schlesinger was refeniJig only to a
mythical "statistical shortage," his deputy eEJ>Iained.
O'Leary also used that occaolon to praise as "entirely
prudent" the major oil corporations' declaion to "husband
and safeguard" large oil inventories. Industry critics
suggest thilt the companies actually were hoarding their
stocks while awaiting higher market prices- and bigger
profits.
Item: Schlesinger regularly told congressional comn_llt·
tees during January and February that the lou of Iraruan
production could require mandatory service alation Shutdowns on Sundays or even entire weekends.
However a study coiillnillsloned by Schlesinger's own
departmeni showed that closing gas atations on weekeods
was the most wasteful of eight possible energy-saving
measures under consideration.

MEDICAL DOCTOR'S
NEW DISCOVERY BURNS AWAY .MORE FAT THAN IF YOU RAN
..

DATELINE SAN DIEGO - An amazing
diet breakthrough has been developed by a
southern California M.D.
This breakthrough literally allows you to
burn off body fat faster than someone who
runs almost IOO miles per week.
This may very well lle the m( st amazing
weight loss discovery of the century.ln fact,
it may be the fastest way to lose weight per·
maneritly that has ever been developed.
Testing so far is incomplete but there is a
very strong suspicion that this discovery
makes it possible for an overweight person
to lose as much as 2 pounds of fat 'and fluid
everyday for the first week. Actually, it niay
produce a 6 pound weight loss In just the
first 48 hours! After the first week, this discovery could conceivably allow a continu·
ing weight loss of as much as 9 pounds every
two weeks thereafter.lfneeded, it should be
possible to use this method to lose 50, 60, 70
or even I 00 pounds anti more.
When you begin to use this program, you
can expect to be able to measure the difference in your waistline in just 24 to 48
hours. You will probably lose more inches
each week than even if you faithfully did
hundreds of sit ups everyday. You may very
well lose as much as 3 to 5 inches off your
waistline in the first month. If you ·are a
woman, you can lose as much as a full dress
size in only 7 days.

T~ doctor who developed this formula is
more than an ordinary· M.D. He is also a
psychiatrist who specializes in alcohol and
drua addictions. In addition to his other
patients, he has treated more than 2500 drug
addicts. But strangely enough, his practice
h~s taught him that overeating is as difficult
to deal with as any hard-core drug addiction. He came to realize that what was
needed was an anti-fat weapon that was
both safe and very powerful. After a lof of
research, he has developed just such a .
weapon. Apparently, what happens is t·hat
his cra.$h-burn system turns up your body's
"inner · furnace" .and breaks down your
excess body fat and automatically flushes it
out of your body forever.

1\nother nice thing about this disconry is

The ru,s h is on. It is easy to imagine that

get their hands on this wonderful anti-fat
weapon .
You can't blame them. Imagine how it
must feel to ilrop up to 2 pounds a day and
shrink your waistline up to 3 inches the first
week.
The first concern of the doctor who
developed this program is safety. Therefore,
his anti-fat formula contains absolutely' no
drugs. It is made up entirely of IOO% natural
ingredients. He first tested it on himself and
he now uses it religiously every day. This
program can even help people who have
been hopelessly overweight all their lives
including those who need to lose 20 to 30 or

Remember - this amazing reducing aid
is a doctor-developed formula. It starts to

This is a totally new concept in the war
against fat. There simply has never been an
anti-fat weapon quite like this. It almost
seems to evaporate fat and inches from the

Remember - you don't have to wait

instantly! You can actually see the results in
just a few days.
The way you use this formula is simple.
All you do is mix it with a glass of your
favorite beverage and drink it everyday the
first thing in the morning.
As soon as you do this, you will have
automatically stepped up your fat burning
metabolism . This will continue for the next
24 hours.
Then, during the rest ofthe day, you eat a
wide selectiqn of tasty foods which is
scientifically programmed to maintain a
high level or fat burn-off.
That's all there is to it. This may be the
most effective fat-burning method ever
