the board and state and county officials In February.
"I question that," Plummer said after the meeting.
"I don't believe that at all."
McCormick's motion to prepare charges against
Plummer was seconded by GaiDa County board
member Warren F . Sheets. Both are new appointees,
attending their second meeting as board members
Monday. It was Sheets who requested In July that
Plummer's status be discussed at Monday night'S
special meeting.
· MCCormick said he made the motion because
many persons In Jackson County question the quallty
of Plummer's leadership. Also, he emphasized that
Plummer and her attorney have asked that some
decision be reached .
Mter wrttten charges are presented to Plummer,
Strapp said she will have an opportunity for a hearing
before the board to dispute the accusations.
Following the hearing, the board can vote to fire
her, Strapp said.
Plummer said she wtU consult her attorney before
deciding to request a bearing.
,
Afinal decision concerning Phlmmer' s slatus could
come before an Oct. 'n bearing In U.S. District.Court

In Columbus Involving her suit against the board .
A judge will consider then whether to grant a
preliminary Injunction barring the board from taking
action against Plummer untll the suit is settled.
Strapp saw no problem In the board acting before
the hearing.
"This board can do anything it wants untll a court
says,It can't," he said.
Plummer's suit claims the board and other
defendants have trted to fire her without due process.
Following is the board members, their home counly

The Kuhn accolades may have !allen on the deaf ears of !hat militant
segment of owners determined to put a new man in !he office. A screening
committee is supposed to present names of prospective successors at the
Boston meetings.
Kuhn's second seven· year contract expires Aug. 12 and he teclmicallv
already has been fired, failing to win enough votes for reelection .
·
Word spreading through the haseball world is that no strong, viable and
acceptable candidate has been produced and baseball may face a period of
headlessness until tbe fragmented owners, all protecting varied private
interests, can reach accord .
Kuhn has insisted he will not serve as an interim commissioner. But he has
allowed reports to cimJiate that he wouldn't be averse to a shorter termpossibly two or three years.
This has raised conjecture in many knowledgeable qfl8Tters !hat !hE'
commissioner might escape !he fall of the axe, It only briefly.
Kuhn's fate appears in !he hands of lntluentlal St. Louis Cardinal owner
Augte Busch, said to control part of !he National League voting bloc that
axed Bowie in the first place.
"I've Written a lot of letters to Busch," said former Commissioner A.B.
(Happy) Chandler, on,. of Kuhn's most strident boos!E'rs. " He hasn't
answered a one. I'm not sure he's reading my mall."

hand ahd see if you can lig·
ure ciut how an astute
declare~ ·got enough help
from his East-West opponents to make 11 tricks
wheil I 0 appear to be almost
oul of range.
He won the first trick with
the ace of diamonds over
East's queen and played aceking and a small club to .
dummy. Then be Jed
dummy's nine of hearts and
Eut made the ineffective
falsecard of the ace. This ·
falsecard persuaded poor
West that he needed to guard
hearts with all his might,
Now East led the five of
diamonds. Dummy's king
won and the last club was
cashed. East chucked the
deuce of spades , South
sloughed the five and W""t
careflilly unblocked diamonds to avoid some end
play that he had visualized.
The three of hearts wu led.
East played biB king and led
another diamond.
South gratefully took his
10 spot and watched poor
West squirm. West had been
squeezed in hearts and
spades and actually threw a
spade .
Now all that was necessary for thereat of the tricks
was for South to take a
spade finesse, and he did just
·
that.
