That old magic
,

The small ad In the back of the magazine carried the caption, "Afraid
of the water?" The ad said that for $7.50 this mlnlster would send a
"package of ash leaves. A few leaves ·on your person In a small bag will
keep you from drowning. A bit added to t~ bath wlll also act as a skin
softener.''

He Is not the only mlnlster who oHers magical cures for huma11
problems. For a free..will offering, some radio preachers wm send you a
"prayer cloth" said to have healing powers. Or you can ""'Juest a pra:,'er
card or other charm which Is supposed to protect you from sickness.
accident or catastrophe.
St Christopher medals can be pumhased In most stores selling
religious goods . Many drivers carry these medals In their automobiles In
the belief that the patron saint of travelers wUI assure them a safe trip.
Are these things out -and-out supen.tltlous•
Yes. psychologt•ts woold contend. Are they frauds? That depends,
according to one.
"ls a ra bbit 's foot a fraud?" he asks. " Is giving people hope a fraud ? U
people believe something w!l! bring them good luck, this olteh wUI keep
them from giving up when aU other resources have faUed ."
Most ministers who o!fer these ''bags d tricks" to bring good luck or
ward off evil are careful not Ill make any fraudulent claims for lhetr
products.
"We make no claims of supernatural effects or powers of any kind ,"
says the literature maUed out by Chicago minister, Rev. BU!y Sunday.
"Belief or dtsbeltef In these products Is so~ly the preorgatlve of the
Individual.
But then he produces testimonials from people who say that the5e
products worked for them.
· One woman gives credit for her success at bingo to Rev. Sunday's
Bingo Spray which she sprays on her hands and her money hefore she
plays. Tw~ Las Vegas gamblers claim they made It big at the gaming
tables a lter spraying their bodies and money wit~ Rev. Sunday's
Magnetizing Spray (' magnetize yourself for luck" ).
The clergyman also sells a Love-Breaker Spray which "wUl spoU a
love aHalr or break up a marriage" - In case you ""' sw""t on someone
who Is married or In love with another person.
As widespread as belle! In superstition and magics Is today, It was
even more widespread tn ancient times. And for good reeson. Sooner or
later, magic always worked .

As J .G. Frazier says In "The Golden Bough," a cer emony Intended to
make the wind blow or the rain taU will "always be followed. at some time
or other, by the occurence It Is meant to bring to pass. Prtmlttve man may
he excused lor regarding the occurrence as a direct result of the
ceremony.''

Ancient magic was the forerunner of religion and sclenre. The
magician was often a man of stature In the community, not to be confused
with the modern-day magician who performs magic acts for
entertainment.
Later, when the believer In magic saw that the maglclan "had been
puUing at strings to which nothing was attached," he lost confidence tn
magic. He came to realized that the natural forces were not under man's
control - that the rain fell and the sun rose without man's Incantations.
What probably happened to bring on the realization Is that the man
who was responsible for reciting the Incantation to make the sun come up
overslept one morning and, lo and bellond, the sun rose as usual.
If the world went on Its way wlthoutman'sald, then It must Ill!, the new
. reasoning went, because !here were unseen belngll who directed Its course.
Man now addressed these " higher powers" -and the magic gave way to
reltgton.
As for the St. Christopher medals, do they really protect the occupants
of a car from accidents?
" Only It you're going less than :VJ mUes an hour," says a Rom~
Catholic priest .

order.
There haven't been many occa·
stons for applause during this term.
Through June 13 the court had
divided 54 on 20 cases. Time after
time the justices have done the
spread-eagle act; In the Missouri
abortion case, Powell wrote an
opinion In six parlls, but he
appeared to be alone ln liking all six
of them. His eight colleagues
romped oil In three directions,
concurring and dissenting across
the landscape. All of the justices
tend toward long-wtndedness, and
Justice Blackman In particular has
a way of silting on a case forever .
But June 13 was a good day, and
because I recently have had !!Qme
unkind things to say about the
court's occasional adventures In
judicial activism. It Is only fair to
call attention to the court's opinions
In two cases. One Involved an
unhappy aerospace engineer In
Alabama. The other Involved five
unhappy black sailors In the Navy.
In hoth cases the court refused to

engineer, felt aggrieved by the

You see the thecry, I trust: The
dangers of cigarette smoking have
now been raised to the level of fact,
rather than the oplnioo of a
government bureaucrat; the ll·
loesses In question have all heen
capitalized; and the warning now
carries wtth tt an exclamation
point. Surely, the senators must
feel, such an alarm will cause the
most confirmed cigarette s moker
to reach for a lollipop.
Well, of course It won't. The
reason Is rooted tn one of the
essential attributes or human nature: None of us believe we are
going to die or get seriously Ill.
On an Intellectual level, oi course,
this belief Is stupid. We know we are
all mortal; all of us have been very

Ill, or have been clOse to someone
who has been very 111; we know that
we aU live under a Sword of
Damocles. We just don't act that
way.
_ Years before the first surgeon
general's report on smoking In 1964,
the popular slang for cigarettes was
"coffin nails." A hit record of the
1940s contained the lyric: "Smoke,
smoke, smoke that cigarette/ Smoke, smoke, smoke, until you
smoke yourself to death." The
current surgeon general has said
Dally that cigarette smoking ts the
most avoidable cause of death and
Ulness In the United States. And the
Congress, while still In thrall to the
tobacco subsidy, did help push
cigarette ads o!f television more
than a decade ago, and has been
ordering progressively more se.

for almost as long.
What's been the result? WeD,
cigarette consumption did fall In
l ~82. to 630 billion from 640 billion a
yeur earlier; but that's still a big
jump from !be 536.5 b!lllon cigarette• bought back In 1970.
Researchers and !flentists keep
telling peopk that they risk death
with tills habit. Cigarette ads and
bUlboards show trim and fit
athletes lighting up after leaving
the tennis court or jogging trails.
And the massive denial of reality
goes on.
