Use of legislative veto barred
WASHINGTON - In a momentous shift of political clout from
Congress to the presidency, the Supreme Court today barred use of
the "legislative veto" to thwart executive decisions.
The court, by a 7·2 vote, said Congress no longer may rely on the
long·used device to set aside nwnerous goverrunent agency
regulations and presidential orders.
The decision means Congress will have to scrap portions of more
than 200 laws In which the veto device has been used to dlctale the
spending of billions ol dollars.
Experts have predicted that It could take Congress decades to fully
comply with today 's decision .

Letters to the editor
What is the purpose of
summer ball programs
. I'm wrttlng this letter concerning
the Little League, Pee Wee and
T-Ball.
.
I would like someone to tell me If I
am wrong or not, I thought the
Little League, Pee Wee and T·Ball
were to teach children to play ball
and get along with one another, not
to Oght and yell at each other, and If
tHey aren't the best that dosn't
mean they can 't plaY as. much as
the rest of the children. If they don't
· get to play, how are they going to
lejtrn to be competitive.
.I went to a Little League game
Saturday evening. Two boys sat on
the bench the entire game, because
they wer;en't good enough and the
game was very close. It looks to me
like the "parents of some of the

children think that their "lltue
ones" should be as good as the pros
that are making thousands of
dollars a. year. Hoi# m<~ny of thoSe
children wUI ever play ball profes·
slonally? It looks to me llke the
parents have hundreds of dollars
bet on each game and are afraid to
let their child lose. These children
will grow up and not always win In
real lite. So It looks like they need to
ieatn a little defeat now and then, ·
tlut I think every lloy and girl should
get to play an equal amount of lime .
after all the game Is for them, not
the parents.
Thank you,

On this point he Identities closely
