Among the assets lost by a good many banks In the past lew years ls a
quality not often recognized or tully assessed. Itlsasenseofrlsk, or at least
a sense of prucblt rlsk.
.
It was a quality worn like a vest by the old-fashioned banker, and Its au"'
could be felt as soon as yilu entered theold·style bank. You may remember
It, because It was prevalent as :recmtly as the 1900s.
·
Somewhere back then a lot of the nation's conunerclal banks developed
I!Q'go fever. Executives who earlier didn't
know the price of tbelr
stock became very aware. And they became very conscious of their growth
rate too.
Growth became fashionable, andltseemedtobecon1lrmed by the stock
market. Institutions with great pUes of money to Invest began for the first
time to load up on bank stocks. It was a new growth Industry.
The push was on. Banks set growth targets. They built up their
commercial loans at a rate faster than their old-fashioned retall busll1ess.
Arid In doing so, says David Cates, they set up conditions !bat got them Into
'trouble later.
.
Cates, a tonner anthropologist who studies banklrlg and Its culture with
an Intensity that places him In the top rank of Industry analysts, observes
·that almost all bank !allures are preceded by swltt growth of commercial
loans.
·
·... -He ldentlfle5 three chronic problenis that develop trom swltt growth.
• First, he says, tbe growing bank probabty takes borrowerS from other
banks, and almost Inevitably some of those borrowers wUI be of poor
