percent in 1960 to 5.8 percent in the calendar year 1982.
In 196J we spent $45 billion on defen,;e, or 8.9 percent of the $507 billion
gross national product. In 1982 we spent $179 billion. Since the GNP has
grown to $.3.fl7 trillion, the percentage was just 5.8.
Another significant trend is revealed by an eagle's eyp view of the same

The chi ldre n were ca lled lo

They told us our mother
had just passed away_
I stood by the ca sket lhat

I wanted to tell her
I wanted to say It has not been that long
Mom
S1nce Dad passed away .
What I would have g1ven to
JUSt have you slay.
Somehow I look back one
year ago today.
And know thai you'rew1th h1m:
What more co uld 1 say1
No more pa1n. no more sad ness
Will you have to bear .
Should I te ll my son some day,
That one day I II be happy
When I'm called away.
