Long distance telephone tax may he changed
By LEE LEONARD
UPI Statehouse Reporter
COLUMBUS. Ohio (UP!) - A proposed 4.75

"We are going to recharacterize II so the

''We're working on an alternative," said.
Thomas C. Green of the American Telephone &

"We've still got a ways to go. We feel it's a viable
alternative If the bugs-can be worked out."
Sources said the sales tax on phone conversations would produce as much as the original
Celeste telephone tax proposal. and would supply
piggyback sales tax revenues to counties with a
local sales tax.
The telephone companies, sources said, would
be permitted to pass the sales tax on to customers .
but would' pledge to reduce rates to keep
residential phone bills the same.
With removal of the tax from dedlcaled lines
used for data processing, ·a major Republican
objection would be eliminated - that hlgh·tech
businesses would be !!riven from Ohio .
