Whither the Democratic Party
Technically I oughtn't to be
• dispensing good advice to the
Democrats anyway. If I were
more Machiavellian, I would
encourage them to keep right on
. nominating Northern liberals for
president untll they get It right.
My own private hope Is that they
pick Marlo Cuomcr In 1992. That
pigeon was made for me.
But as Emerson observed,
" God forever screens us from
premature Ideas." U the Democrats aren' t ready for change,
nothing I say will mailer.
To $0me extent, the depth of
the Democrats' dilemma Is obs·
cured by the comforting tact that
they stU! control botb houses of
Congress - In fact, managed to
Increase their margins, even
while being trounced by Bush . .
· (They gained only one seat In
the Senate, however, and that

Buckley and scores of thousands
ol other Connecticut Republicans .
finally decided they preferred
even a Democrat to Lowell
Welcker, the pompous liberal
swine who had been mlsrepres. entlng them In the Senate for 18
: years.)
But the Democrats' control of
Congress has far more to do with
the advantages ol Incumbency
(plus, In the House of Representatives, gerrymandering) than
with the charms of the Democratic congressional candidate
from his Republican rival on the
basis of their campaigns. ·
Living In New York, for example, I saw a good many TV
, commercials In which the tncum·bent (and subsequent'ly victor·
lous) Democra lie senator from
next-door New Jersey, Frank
Lautenberg, was depleted as an
absolute scourge of criminals a tactic that conveniently obs·cured his general record as oneot
the Senate's most passionate
llberals.
Nor is it true, as George Will
has suggested, that continued
Democratic domination of Congress Indicates a settled disposition on the part of the voters to be
"philosophically conservative
but operationally liberal": t.e.,
to use their presidential votes as
.• a way of signaling their general

The word "help" is one of the most
''ersatile ones in ouflanguage. It can
mean sqmething as little as holding a
door open for someone, or as much as
offering your services as a full-time
volunteer to he!p the poor. Your local
community is full of people and
organizatiOns in need of your
assistance, and this list includes your
House of Worship. When you think of
all the blessings you have received
there if you have been attending the
services regularly, you will be filled
with a natural desire to do whatever
you can in return. This might involve
making phone calls, typing the
bulletin, baking cookies, painting the
stripes in the parking lot or performing
some other needed job. You depend
on the Lord for many things; show
Him that He can depend on you to be
there when you are needed.

Horse thieves may be in area
Horse thieves could be operating in the Gallla·Meigs County
area. according to a report from .one area manager.
Fred Vollborn, manager of Bob Evans Hidden Valley Ranch,
Green Valley Road, told the Gallipolis Daily Tribune today that
. a horse was missing from the farm Tuesday night . Vollborn said
the animal had apparently been stolen because when it was
found the next.day it still had a piece of rope around its neck.
Vollborn said the incident had not been reported to authorities
because he had just completed his investigation Wednesday ,
but that it would be reported. Area farmers or stockmen are
encouraged to keep an eye on their livestock and report ai)Y
thefts or unusual incidents
According to Vollborn, the horse was the one that was hit by a
car late Tuesday night on State Route 160. The animal had
bruises on its side.
Vollborn said there were other bits of evidence which led him
to believe there had been attempts to steal hOrses in the area,
including cut fences and wire cut from the top of a gate.
