ALEXANDER - Chris Stewart fired a 4 hitter and Eddie
Crooks played a brUlant de!en·
slve game behind the plate as the
Meigs Marauders defeated the
Alexander Spartans 2·0 Thurs·
day evening.
The only difficult Inning for
Stewart .was In the second when
with two out, Stewart walked .
three straight Spartans but got
the lead off hitter, Hawk to hit a
comebacker to the mound to end
the threat .
On the defensive side, Crooks
fast becoming one of the ·best
·defensive catchers In the area,
threw out three would be Spartan
ba!!e stealers.

I studied the Bible for a number of years and yet did not really
know the meaning of thll vene. When I was 40 ye.ars old, I had
been locked up for 10 years for murder and robbery. I bad
escaped, been re-arrested, charred with another murder, and
put Into solitary confinement. I thought that my world had come
to an end and that there was no one to turn to. How wrong I was!
There was one I had lunied my back on long ago. Thai someone
was Jesus Chrllt.
When l picked up the Bible In that lonely cell, I found John
8:12. When r asked Jesus to take control of my llfl', I felttbe Holy
Splrll touch me, and I knew that Cl!rllt, the light of life, had
come Into my life. I knew I would never walk In darkness a11aln.
After four times In• prison, havlnr spent 25 years of my life
locked up, J was tlnally free. Jesus bad set me free. Even though
I am still In prison I am tree. I ltve every day for Jesus. Jesu9
can Set us free when we let Him control our life.

Wherever you live, you can either find them,

blooms. Even in the desen, tiny blossoms
emerge &om the sand. In the cities, people
cultivate gardens and window boxes. Flowers can
send messages: "I love you," "I'm sorry," "Get

~! Diabetes.affects all parts of the body.

:-•

By JoiJD C. WoU, D.O.
•: Auoclate Professor of Farnlly
;•
Medlclae
; : Ohio University College of Osteo'
pathle Medldne
. ~oa: I have had diabetes
:: for several years, and my family
:· doctor has asked me to !lee an
; · ophthalmologist each year. Why
: · Is this necessary?
-: , Auwer: Diabetes Is a serious
: · disease which affects many parts
= of the body - Including the eyes.
;. The elevated blood sugar of
• diabetes can cause damage to
• several different sections of -t he
: eye. The lens of the eye, the part
: which allows theeyetofocus, can
:..· swell and shrink with changes In
•· blood sugar. This produces
:· blurry vision. After this process
of alternate shrinking and swel: lin& has gone on for a number of
:· years, the lens -may become
•; cloudy. This cloudiness Is called
. " a cataract, and it reduces vision
;: just as dirt on a magnifying glass
• makes It difficult to see objects
•· clearly. Evehtually the lens can
: become so cloudy that It blocks
the light from getting through It,
and this results in blindness. The
~ only treatment at this stage is
.' surgical removal of the offending
,.• lena.
•
Another serious diabetic eye
,.. prqblem Involves the blood ves;::: sels that nourish the retina, the
: · 'herve In the back of the eye that
• converts light into signals the
• brain Interprets as sight. Fifty
:·· percent of Individuals who have
~ had diabetes for 10 years and 80
:. percenl of lhose who have had it
• for 15 years will have this
::'·-condition.
•
The problem begins when the
" blood vessels In the retina
become swollen and damaged
and start to bleed. The danger Is
~ not from the amount of blood
loss, because this Is very small,
·: -l:!Ut It Is from the location of the
: bleeding. The area of the retina
:; . which Is nourished by the dam·
·, aged vessel doesn't get all the
~ blood It needs. The body also
;.. responds to the bleeding by
:~ crowing new small blood vessels
. -.)Ji the affected area. Unfortu·
'• nately, these new blood vessels
~ are Ineffective and only make
~ matters worse. The loss of blood
;... and the new vessel growth
·7· (neovascularizatlon) produce
•: blindness In that'little area of the
.:~ retina. Without treatment, more
: , ·and more areas become Involved
;:. until ultimately, blindness
- . results.
'-·
Queallon: If I control my blood ·
.~: sugar, do I still have to be
-: worried about my eyes?
:.·
Allaw~: Yes, you are still at
-~ rl.lk of developing eye problems.
:; But, If you keep your sugar under
: strict control, any vlslondlfficul-

.

ties are less likely to be serious.
Your blood sugar should never
get over 200 mg/dl, the same
level which nondiabetic Individuals have. This will require
careful attention to diet, exercise
and medication. Likewise, It's
Important to keep a close watch
on your blood pressure, since,_
hillh blood pressure - which Is
more common In diabetics also Increases the risk of damage
to your blood vessels, Including
those in the eye.
Question: How are diabetic eye
problems treated?
Answer: The most Important
treatment is p\-eventlon, and
keeping that blood sugar level

under control Is the key. Bleeding
Inside the eye (retinal hemor·
rhage) and the growth of new,
Ineffective vessels (neovascular·
lzatlon) can be treated with a
laser. An ophthalmologist does
this by directing a laser beam at
the affected area. The pulse of
laser light seals off the leaky
vessel. This won't restore vision,
but It wtll prevent or slow the
progression to blindness. The
other eye prOblems associated
with diabetes -bleeding Into the
Jelly ·like filling behind the lens of
the eye (vitreous), glaucoma and
cataracts - can also be treated
with different types of surgery
and medicine.

Life of a trash collector;
its not a job for morons
Dear Ann Landers: I didn't
care for the comments of the
pollee officer who wrote, "Your
garbage collector probably
makes more money than I do,
and he doesn't have to work
nights, weekends and holtdays.
Try calling your garbage collector when you need more service
and ask him to come over. See
what he says."
I'm fed up with people using
the garbage collector as an
example of an easy job for
morons. I'm married lo a garbage man and this Is what his life
is like:
He leaves forworkat4:30a.m.,
six days a week. His route
consists of 2,500 homes. The only
40-hour week he ever put In was
during his paid vactton. <t he
spent just a few extra minutes at
each stop, he would be out there
an additional two or three hours a
day.
~e works rain or shine. We
recently had a cold spelL One day
It was 50 below zero. My husband
was out In that miserable
weather for 10 hours.
The pay Is not all that great. He
works on commission, 17.5 cents
per house. The risk of getting
hurt Is high. The company has
had as many as 10 men out with
Injuries at a time.
Tell your readers that the next
time they have extra garbage to
let the garbage man know they
appreciate the extra service.
Whether It's a few homemade
cookies, a can of pop or just a
thank-you note. he would sure
like lt. Sign me - The Wife of a
Hard-Working Man In Mln-ota
Dear Minnesota: Every garbage collector and his wife will
bless you. I'll admit that I had
very tittle understanding of what
their Jives were Jtke. You eduCI\ted a lot of people today including me.
Dear Ann Landers: Please
al~rt your readers to a new form
of•child abuse. I was shocked to
learn of It
The -pediatric dentist told my
4--year-old grandchild that If he
didn't stop crying, he would tell
his mother to bring his pajamas

spend the night In the office.

They have no Idea of what goes on

Please warn parents to be

Dear Grandma: I can't Imagine why the children who are
treated so badly do not tell their
parents. It seems they would
refuse to go back to this awful
man.
Any dentist who uses this
approach to keep children In line
should be reported to the state

You are sadly missed

As on earth we trod.

But it"s a comfort to

know
God

Will never stop no

To Laudermllt, and many
other Meigs County supporters of
Special Olympics, the program Is
more than just special -It's the
best. Laudermllt has seen hand I·

happier, just because of their
participation in Special Olym·
