PITTSBURGH (A.!') - All of
the tomahawk choppers in Georgia
haven't decided this series, nor

Here's the linescore from the
last two playoff games in Pittsburgh : three rivers outside the stadium, two runs inside it. ~
The Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates will play Game 7 of a
incredible rollercoaster ride, a gutwrenc hing gripper of a playoff
series tonight, and what is rem;u-kable is that both teams are but a
vi ctory away fro111 the World

" I don't know how the fans are

Sound like a lot of 1-0 games?
None of the 137 playoff series and
World Series since 1903 had featured so many 1-0 games. By con tras t, there were only four in the
previous 22 NL playoffs.
"This is a lot of fun to play, but
it must be miserable to watch. How
much can you take?" Buechele

to rewrite the record books as the
5- 11, 207-pound senior threw for
322 yards and two touchdowns.
The 322 yards broke Phalin's own
record of 275 set in last years win
over Wellston. Shawn Hawley the
senior tight end for Meigs also had
an outstanding game with nine
catches for 130 yards. Robby
Wyatt also had a good game with
three catches for 75 yards, includ·
ing a excellent catch and run late in
the game that set up the last
Marauder touchdown that gave
Meigs a short lived lead.
The Marauder ground attack
hasn't been real sharp of late, but
Frank Blake is still gaining around
five yards a carry. Frank a 5-7,
!57-pound senior is a man you can
depend o~ to J;l~~k up the tqugh
yards when needed and junior tailback Mike Cremeans is a lhreat to
break the big one at any time. Last
week Phalin led the Marauders on
the ground wilh 43 yards on -seven
carries.
The Marauder special teams
have shone as of late. Kevin Musser returned a kick-off'87 yards for a
~uchdown two weeks ago, and last
week three different Meigs kick
returners , including Musser,
returned kicks to the ne(~hborhood
of the 50-yard line.
Meigs will be auempting to
break a three game losing streak to
·Waverly when the opening kickoff
takes place at7:30 Friday evening.

The D~ily Sentinelf Eastern to face Oak Hill in critical SVAC battle Friday

The Meigs Marauder will travel
. to Waverly this Friday evening to
play Coach. Ed Bolin and the
Waverly Tigers. Both teams head
into the game with a 3-4 records
· and both teams are coming off losses.
The Tigers have picked up wins
this year over Athens, Ros,s.Southeastern, and Minford, while they
have lost to Jackson, Portsmouth
West, Fairland and Wheelersburg.
The lost to Wheelersburg was last
week and the Tigers defeated
Waverly wilh ease 52-14.
The Tigers are a young team
that features only one senior, three
juniors, five sophomores and two
freshmen in their starting offensive
line-up. Waverly is Jed by sophomore quarterback Mark Swinning.
Swinnmg a 6-4, 175-pounder has
thrown for over 1,200 yards ihis
year wlth a top game o( 302 against
Jackson. Bill Sowers a 5-10, 160
junior returns as a .starter for the
Tigers at tailback.
The Marauders are coming off a
heartbreaking 30-29 loss to Well·
ston last Friday evening. Meigs
was behind in !he lhird quarter 27· 7
only to take the lead with three
minutes left in the contest. But the
Golden Rockets drove close
enough for Chad Ingalls to hit a 28

The Vikin~s · deferi~ must also
show respect for the Pirates' running game, because after junior ·
running back .Dave Dobbins picked
up 101 yards- the ftrst runner not
named Darin Smith or Casey Slaton to do so - and scored a touchdown in the Oak Hill game, any
lapse in concentration by the scarlet and gray could mean rapid-fire
touc.hdowns. And Symmes can't ,
forget about junior quarterback.
Charles, Peck, who has knocked on
the door of 100 yards on two occasions so far, and he has scored at
le~ one touchdown in each of the
Pi~cs' last six games, including
two end zone visits in the Oak Hill
.game.
Hannan Trace vs. Kyger Creek
The first-quarter blahs continue
for Hannan Trace, and unless Don
Saunders'' crew, . which hasn't
scored in the first quarter in its last
14 games, doesn't get its act
together (translation: a visit to the
end zone sometime between 7:30
and 8 p.in .. EDT) very soon, the
same thing that has happened every
autumn Friday after these sam e
Wildcats hammered ijuntington
Vinson 44-6 in Week 21ast yeara loss - willllappen again.
Of course, Kyger Creek, a team
that has scored a rriere 27 points in
the first half all season, hasn't
demonstrated much ability to get
off to a good start, either. Twenty
of those points came in the second
quarter, -and the seven points the
Bobcats scored in the opening
frame came in their 22-13 loss to
Waterford in Week 1
Can the fans lake a nap in the
first quarter, wake up before the
second quarter 'starts and not miss
anything? Perhaps. Maybe that 's
the reason Kyger Creek, which is
also hosting a homecoming game
Friday night, is 2-5, while Trace is
0-6,
While Hannan Trace can't
afford to forget about Bobcat running back Phil Br~dbury and lhc
earth-moving veteran line that
gives him running roo(fl, the Bobcats should be well advised not to
lake the Wildcats as lightly as the
latter's current record may suggest.
Guyan lailback Heath Hutchinson,
a 5-9, 130-pound freshman , who
recorded his third straight 100yard-plus game with a 119-yard
performance in last week 's 36-6
loss to Southern, is quite elusive.
Barring injuries, he should be as
deadly out of the backfiel~ in the
next two years as Bissell and Bill
Potter are now,
Southwestern vs. Southern
Southwestern, which may sec
senior widcout Steve Davis at quarterback for tho second straight
week in place of an injured Aaron
McCarty, needs lt miracle to collect
its second straight victory against
Southern on the Tornadoes' home
field.
Southern, which is also hosting
a homec<Jming game this weekend,
will , like the Highlanders, seck to
even its record at4-4. But the Tornadoes' 5-3 defense must put its
swarming skills to use against a
Willy Gilbert who has racked up
100-yard games in two of his lust
three games and has scored a
touchdown in each of his last five
games.
In last week's loss to Symmes
Valley, Gilbert, a 5-7, 161-po~nd
junior, racked up 133 yards agamst
a Viking crew that had put the
game away earlr. As a linebacker
teamed with semor Kevin Gillman,
the Killer Gs must assume this collective mantle to take on Racine's
Mack truck - fullback Russell
Singleton.
Singleton, a 6-3, 195-pound
junior, has averaged 7.2 yards per
carrY in gaining 745 yards in each
of the Tornadoes' seven games. He
has been a welcome presence in a
backfield that lost mainstays Tnlvis
Nease and all~nference selection
Todd Grindstaff to graduation. He
has also been a welcome distrac·
tion to a passing game that woke
up from its two-week slumber
(translated: no touchdowns vs. Oak
. Hill or Kyger Creek in the previous
two. games) with a three-touchdown performance in last week's
game against Hannan Trace.

By Pblllip Alder
An entertaining book, "Match Your
Bidding Against the M8llter3," bas jtlst
been written by Keith McNeil. He is
the director of Blddinl Forum, a fea ·

it, experts from all over the world answer bidding problems, and the reader
can learn from their analysis while being entertained by McNeil's vitriolic
pen. You can order the book for UUS
by calling 1-800-274-2221.
Here are two typical McNeil comments: "Three no-trump bas more
·drawbacks than a chain smoker." "It

WASHINGTON (AP) - Gun
control advocates, after suffering
an overwhelming defeat in the
House, concede that a ban on.semiautomatic assault weapons w1ll not
be part of this year's'crime bill.
. In the face of a shooting rampage in Texas that left 23 people
dead the House voted 24 7-177

of major anti-crime legislation
, pushed by President Bush and
atready passed by the Senate.

Even the relatively affluent
elderly are hurting this year
because income from their savings
has been pinched by the steep
decline in interest rates.
"To my way of thinking ,
they've got to peg Social Security
to more than inflation if they 're
interested in seein~ that people
who retire don ' t go backward,"
said Frank Kevra, 73, of Port
Orange, Fla., a retired mechanical
engineer who says hi s interest
income has fallen by $100 a montli.
The percentage increase
announced Thursday also applies to
Supplemental Security Income, the
welfare program that provides a

who are elderly, blind or disabled.
The maximum SSI payment will

Gunm.an described as loner
KILLEEN, Texas (AP) - Hundreds of people .went to memorial
services for 22 victims of a suicidal
gunman described by police and
former acquaintances as a vindictive loner who may have nursed a
violent rage against women.
Much remained a mystery two
days after George Hennard, a 35year-old doctor's son, drove his
pickup truck through the wmdow
of Luby's Cafeteria and began fll'·
ing two semiautomatic pistols at a
lunchtime crowd. The Wednesday
afternoon rampage ended when
Hennard, wounded by police fire,
killed himself.
Interviews with former associates revealed Hennard was a difficult man who had spent much of
his life wandering the world as a
seaman until he was thrown out of
the merchant marine in 1989 for

smolcing marijuana.
"He was very vindictive," said
!siah Williams, a branch agent for
the National Maritime Union in
San Pedro, Calif. " He always
wanted to straighten out the score.
He acted like he didn't confide in
anybody or trust in anybody."
The Coast Guard, which
stripped Hennard of his merchant
mariner papers, released documen ts
Thursday stating he had undergone
voluntary drug treatment at a Houston hospital.
At the gunman's home in nearby Belton, his father said he did not
know what caused his son to go on
Wednesday's rampage.
"It was not drugs , that 's for
sure,'' said Georges M. Hennard, a
Houston doctor.
.
Meanwhile, Killeen began to
pick up the pieces of the worst
mass shooting in U.S. history.
Gov. Ann Richard s was to

attend a memorial service this
afternoon at the First Baptist
Church in Killeen.
About 35 0 people filled the
pews at St. Joseph's Catholic
Church Thursday night for song
and prayer.
Bishop John McCarthy of !he
Archdiocese of Austin rejected the
idea that the massacre was God's
will and said it should focus attention on societal problems.
" There are no words a clergyman can say that can allay the pain
and suffering and anguish that
marks this gatherin$," the bishop
said. " God didn' t Will the death of
the men and women of Killeen.''
One note of happiness was
sounded at the discovery of 19year-old dishwasher Mark Mathews, who had hidden overnight in
the cafeteria's large industrial dish:
washer, not knowing whether it
was safe to come out.
